"They are "choosing" to disobey God, live in fear, get beat up, be discriminated against in jobs and housing, have their families hate them." Yes they are. We were given the freedom of choice by God. "Andrea Yates was told that a "good" wife did what her husband said, didn't use birth control, and home schooled her children. She was told this by her church." She methodically murdered her children. Why? Does it really matter? Yes, I can be very opinioniated about things I have strong feelings about. We have the right to question BSA policy we don't agree with or don't understand. I don't feel we would be good leaders if we just took BSA policy at face value. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

Our Advancement Chairman has Troopmaster loaded on his PC & laptop. When ever he updates it, he gives me a disk of the updates & I load that onto my PC at home. This seems to work fine. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

In my Troop, we integrate the new Scouts into existing patrols. Like eisley, we have never found a way to get the New Patrol method to work. We have found the new Scouts learn more from the older Scouts in their patrol. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

I haven't run into this problem yet. We include all the Scouts in the Troop for every outing. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

Now you are comparing apples & oranges again. Women wanting to work and being homosexual are completely different. Women wanting to work has never been considered abnormal. And if being homosexual is normal, why aren't we all that way? IMHO, a homesexual cannot be a good role model. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

sctmom, You said "It means that I want BSA to stop discriminating against a group of people who can provide, and have provided in the past, service to the youth of BSA." The BSA is not discriminating. They are exercising their right of freedom of association. Comparing women being discriminated against in the workplace and homosexuals not being allowed to be in the BSA is like comparing oil & water. How would you feel if your son went on a camping trip and you found out one or more of the leaders were homosexuals? Do you feel these people are good role models for your son? Do you want him to look up to them? Smokers have a bad habit. Does this make them a bad role model? Not entirely. Homosexuals have an abnormal lifestyle. Does that make them bad role models? Yes. Weekender, Congrats on the new Scouts! I know they will be an asset to your Troop. Scout Blitz! Great idea! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

Bob, No we shouldn't get rid of the Eagle Scout! FCFY & earning Eagle are two completely different things that can't be compared. The Eagle Scout program needs no validation. Look at the number of successful people who were Eagle Scout! Considering you feel this program is critical to boys staying in Scouting I feel it needs validation. What about all the boys who stuck around before this program was put in place? Why did they stay? Are more staying now? Less? I think it is more important to find out why they are leaving Scouting & concentrate on that aspect. IMHO, we don't need more "programs" to administer. We need to improve the one we have. And like sctmom, I don't see the correlation between FCFY & boys staying in Scouting. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1(This message has been edited by evmori)

OGE, My son's an Eagle & I tell everyone I meet that asks about my family. He is now in college & doing great. Made Dean's list 1st quarter. Some say getting your Eagle is hard. I think living up to being an Eagle is harder. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 -
I stand corrected. Thanks NJ!

WOW! Letting the boys decide what event they want to attend! Novel idea for an organization that promotes the "boy led" concept! Sound like the CE is under pressure to get the numbers up for the council event. Weekender, I applaud your decision to let the boys decide! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

Bob, The statistics would validate the program. A program without validation is just a program. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

If I'm not mistaken, the reason for the James Dale decision had nothing to do with the 1st Ammendment. It dealt with the freedom of association. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

The summer camp we attend has a new leader orientation in May for all new leaders & parents who have never beem to summer camp. I always encourage the new parents to attend & take the tour. This gives them an idea about the accomadations their son will have for the week. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

NJ hit the nail on the head. Monthly roundtable is when the Pack & Troop leaders get together to discuss the upcoming events in the district. This would be the perfect time to gather your information. Contact the Cub & Troop roundtable chairs & coordinate this through them. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

County Closes Bank Account to Protest Handling of Boy Scouts

I just found this article on line: Levi Strauss to Cut 3,300 Jobs Mon Apr 8, 9:48 AM ET SAN FRANCISCO - Jeans maker Levi Strauss & Co. said Monday it will shutter six U.S. manufacturing plants this year and cut 3,300 jobs, or about 20 percent of its workforce. The company, whose sales have been sagging, has said it wanted to have others manufacture its clothing and move toward marketing the finished product. "There is no question that we must move away from owned-and-operated plants in the U.S. to remain competitive in our industry," said Philip Marineau, chief executive officer. The plants will close in three phases, Levi Strauss said in a statement. In June, the company will close plants in San Francisco and Blue Ridge, Ga.; in August, plants in Brownsville and San Benito, Texas; in October, plants in Powell, Tenn., and El Paso, Texas. The privately-held company said it will continue to operate a sewing plant and a finishing center in San Antonio, though it will cut about 300 jobs there too. Levi Strauss employs 16,600 people overall. A poor sales start this year put Levi's on track for its sixth consecutive year of declining revenue. The San Francisco-based company's sales totaled $935.3 million for the three months ended Feb. 24, a 6 percent decline from a year earlier. Laid-off employees will receive a "separation package," the company said. Who says boycotts don't work. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 -

I was watching "The American President" (one of my favorite movies) last night. During Michael Douglas's speech neat the end of the movie he defines freedom of speech very will. He says (I might not get this exactly correct) the freedom of speech is letting someone scream at the top of their lungs something you abhor and would spend a lifetime screaming at the top of your lung to defend. That said, Let them post the Pillars of Islam. I don't agree with Islamic beliefs and would spend my lifetime defending mine. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

I gotta agree with Rooster7. If the program starts to get watered down just to keep the numbers up, then the program suffers. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 -
"Drawing" New Ideas of the boys for planning
evmori replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in The Patrol Method
OGE, Tell them anything goes as long as it is within the BSA guidelines. Also, try by telling them to not pick any activity from last years list until they have exhausted all new ideas. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 -
I can't find the thread where we were discussing JLT & the like. In that thread, I mentioned my district held a course titled Learned Leadership Training (LLT) and there were a few who wanted more information. I got the sylabus this weekend during our camping trip. I have to scan the entire packet in yet. I would be willing to send it to anyone who would like to see what this program is all about. Either post your e-mail address here or send it to me at troop1_pgh@yahoo.com and I will send you the program as soon as I get it scanned. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

Is Wood Badge over as we know it?
evmori replied to wrhatfield's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Bob, I have heard a that bobwhites are chickens in white tights? Is that true? When I took woodbadge, the bobwhite patrol yell was "Yo, bird". I loved it! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 "Eagle soar above all"
