The cost of Cub/Boy Scout uniforms is no more and maybe less expensive than organized sports uniforms. The thing to remember for Boy Scouts is to buy a uniform ths Scout will be able to wear for a lot of years. This way, the up fron cost might be high but in the long run, the cost will be low. WE have encountered this in the past. What we did was dig a trench in an out of the way area & use that for the latrine. When we were leaving, we threw som sanitizer tablets in and covered it up with dirt. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1(This message has been edited by evmori)

How you do formally dismiss a volunteer from the program
evmori replied to Angie141's topic in Issues & Politics
I would like to see the answer to OGE's questions. But until then, if they are threatening to leave & take their son with them and the Pack hasn't violated any BSA rules & regs, I say let them leave. It might be nothing more than a bad fit! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 -
Bob, Thanks for being so persistent with this. I am looking forward to the results. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

One of the ways I think would be helpful in preventing "paper Eagles" would be to stress the importance of the Scout learning independence. I also feel parents should not sign off on Eagle required merit badges. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

In the closet or openly gay, a minister of a faith that believes in God as their authority is living a lie. God destroyed Sodom because the men of the town were having sex with each other & refused to repent. As a Christian, I have been taught (and I teach my kids & Scouts in my Troop) to love the sinner but hate the sin. If homosexuality is OK in God's eyes, why didn't he create a guy for Adam instead of a woman? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

VH_50, Good point. But if the BSA meant the non-secterian god, why hasn't this changed in the updated versions of their printed material? And considering their stance on atheists, I would propose the BSA means God not god. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

Coffee Lady, Keep up the good work. Council can't remove you as SM. That is up to your chartered orginization. Also, I know of no of nothing that requires you to attend you council summer camp. There are Troops in my council that don't attend our council summer camp. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

Bob, By signing the card prior to the Scout starting the badge, isn't the Scoutmaster in a way approving the Scout to work on that merit badge? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

What to do when older scouts are disobedient.

Mike, Stick to your guns! If you back down then you will be challenged on everything. Good Luck Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 -
smaster101, When we attend camporees, I require my Troop to attend religious services. At summer camp, we hold vespers in our site & invite other Troops to join us. It's not an option. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

This is sad. Obviously this Troop didn't know about youth protection. Rooster7, The sentence might be what is allowed by the law in NY. Also, I agree this man is a pedophile - a homosexual pedophile. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

ScoutNut, My Troop has 15 active Scouts & about 7 active adults. We would in no way fill this building. But that isn't really the point. There are Troops in my council that are large enough to fill the building. If the building is sitting empty and my Troop wants to use it, why can't we? Bob, In my council Cubs have the same access to the same facilities that Troops do. At one council camping meeting we were told since Cub adult leadership is more transient than Boy Scout adult leadership they are not as organized & loose out when it comes to reserving council facilities. While this maybe true, I feel it is a line just liek it's "National Policy" Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

Bob, Correct me if I'm wrong (like I needed to say that) but doesn't the blue card need to be signed by the Scoutmaster or other adult Troop leader prior to the Scout starting to work on the badge? (page 187 Boy Scout hand book) Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

bigbeard, Excellent! You got a great bunch of guys! eagle90, The Scouting Way is a neat site that has stories & other Scout stuff. Go to my Troop site at http://www.bsa.net/pa/t1 & click on the link. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

What to do when older scouts are disobedient.
evmori replied to Mike Long's topic in Working with Kids
Mike, Kudos to the way you handled the situation! Like OGE said let the boy remove himself from the Troop. To me, this is in direct violation of the Scout Law. He is not being obedient therefore until he is he should not be allowed to advance since he is not showing Scout Spirit by living the Scout Oath AND Law! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 -
You're right! You also have a legal right to believe that homosexuality is not a sin and that the BSA is bigoted for choosing to protect its youth from from the influence of a sinful lifestyle...But that doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. Man, I wish I woulda said this! I can't agree more. Homosexuals have no place in Scouting. They are not good role models no matter what they do for a living. Bob, You are looking at this with blinders on. The ONLY time the Boy Scouts are allowed to use this building is during camporees. And not all camporees are held at this camp. The volunteers in my district have been told Boy Scouts can't use the building. Now from what I understand one of the reasons this has been designated a "Cub Only" building is it has indoor plumbing. None of the other buildings at this camp do. Now it is my understanding if Cubs want to camp in cabins they must have indoor plumbing. If this is true, why are they allowed to ues any building at any camp in my council? They all don't have indoor plumbing. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

The answer is NO. The Scout oath only requires a belief in God. This can be the God of your choice. While I would like it to be my God (I'm a Christian)it doesn't have to be. This point I am about to make might stir up the pot a little. Since God is capitalized in the Scout Oath I contend this means God. Not the god of water or the god of you carpet. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

ScoutPaul, Yes that was what I was trying to get at! Thanks for seing the forest through the trees. Bob, If I'm not mistaken, it is part of the Scoutmasters job to pick a merit badge counselor prior to giving the Scout permission to complete the badge. And yes I know htos task can be delegated. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1
-
Bob, Thanks for handling the apology. Sometimes I find it hard to put my thoughts on paper. Merit badges are an important part of Scouting and must be earned. If they are just given the Scout learns nothing and comes away from the experience with a distorted view of how things are earned. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

In answer to the question of this thread, yes. If you don't believe this then the Bible is just another book. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

Rooster7 & Weekender, Excellent points! TJ, You can't believe in the New Testament without believing in the Old Testament. The NT has many references to the OT and visa versa. Or do you not consider them valid? Not everything in the Bible is meant to be taken litterally. There are teachings (the parables) that are stories to depict certain things. And BTW, what about "plucking out your own eye" in the NT? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

We have always agreed. It just doesn't seem like it. Demonstrating their knowledge is the same as seeing how they teach. If I get a person who want to be a cooking merit badge counselor, they better be able to go on a camping trip & be able to cook! Plus they must be able to show the boys how to do it. Ya can't show if ya can't do. And being able to do doesn't mean you can teach! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1
