Service hours for 1st Class, Star, Life
evmori replied to Quixote's topic in Open Discussion - Program
We do a variety of things. We count the time each Scout helps with Scouting for Food. We also do various service projects when we go camping at our council Scout camps. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
Homesickness is worse than an actual illness or injury. I have a steadfast rule in my Troop that I will never send a boy home because he is homesick. To me, this does no one any good. I have had Scouts at summer camp who were homesick. They wanted to call home & I asked them what they needed & told them I would call. I did & talked to the parents to tell them what was going on and ask for their support in not sending their son home. Usually homesickness hits when the Scout has down time. I think the key to helping prevent it is to keep them busy so they don't think about home. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

NJ, Since the separation of church & state is nowhere to be found in the Bill of Rights or the Constitution how can it go away? No need to answer. Just being rhetorical. I couldn't resist! Great post, by the way. The thing about this that is sticking in my craw is if jcfraz said the pledge as part of his joining requirement & who knows how many times since, then what's the problem now? I suppose it could be the recent court case. But if jcfraz is of a Christian denomination, Jewish, etc. that believes in God, then there shouldn't be any problem at all! And if there is, it seems that somewhere - either in Scouting or his religion - he is being hypocritical. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10(This message has been edited by evmori)

Ditto to what Mike posted. I would also schedule a trip to the local fire department for these guys & have the firemen explain the dangers associated with aerosol cans & fire. One more thing. At the summer camp we attend, we are not allowed to bring aerosol cans. Maybe a service project for the camp would also be in order. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

To me, it goes to Scout Spirit, the Oath & Law. If the Troop (mine does) opens each meeting with the pledge and you refuse to say it, then I would say you are lacking in Scout Spirit. I would also consider saying the pledge you duty to your country & when you recite the Scout Law, you say a Scout is loyal. Loyal to yoursels, the Troop, your country, etc. Many men and women died for this country. The flag is a symbol of the freedom this country is all about. By reciting the pledge you are saying you believe in the symbol of our country & what is stands for. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

acco40, In a previous post you stated "As a Christian, I have to question ..." Why not just state, "I have to question ..." The reason for this might be because the situation or discussion might not agree with that person's values as a Christian. Does that makes sense? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

My Packs website...what do you think??
evmori replied to tdyer56's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Nice site. Easy to navigate. You might want to add the names of the Tigers, Cubs & Webelos to the Den pages. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
acco40, Wearing a hat because of illness won't cure the illness but it does help alleviate the embarrassment of being bald. Especially for women. Vanity? Maybe. Is this wrong? Absolutly not. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

acco40, There are times I ask questions because I am a Christian because I don't want to comprimise my Christian values. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Who would go for an Ettiquette Merit badge?

If the Troop said the funds stay whether it is in writting or not and the CO is backing them up, then it seems you are fighting a loosing battle. It also sounds like the SM has an axe to grind. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

SO what you are saying is the ACLU fights the fights they can win not the fights worth fighting? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

NJ, No I don't like the ACLU. For a group that is supposed to defend the Constitution & Bill of Rights they sure have a funny way of going about it. I agree with the Skokie case but what's the deal with not allowing Christmas trees or creshes on government property but saying nothing about a menorah in the same location? They fight to have the Ten Commandments reomved from government building but say nothing about Congress beginning each session with a prayer. Seems to me they are a bit self serving. NJ, I just heard that the child who's father filed the complaint actually has no complaint about saying the Pledge in it's current form. It's the dad who is making all the waves and it sounds like it is purely self gratifying! What a bunch of whoey! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Boy, For someone who doesn't want to be in Scouting you sure seem to be involved in a lot of Scouting! You could have declined to be the ASPL & not signed up for the Venturing. Sounds to me like there is something else going on here. I could be wrong, but I don't think so. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Are ASM's to give Scoutmasters' Conferences?
evmori replied to Quixote's topic in Open Discussion - Program
The SM conference is to be given by the SM ergo the name. I am sure there are extenuating circumstance where an ASM can handle this. My SM & BS handbooks are in the basement being "aired out" after summer camp so I am unable to look it up at the present time. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
Sounds like a Scout who wants attention no matter how he can get it. I got one like that, too! Make him clean the latrine. I would also explain that this type of behavior will not be tolerated & if it happens again, there will be more severe consequences. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Got back from summer camp at Heritage Reservation Camp Lberty Yorktown Campsite yesterday. Had great weather. Only rained on Tuesday around dinner then again overnight. Took 8 Scouts & 3 leaders. The Scouts completed 24 of 30 merit badges! They earned the Baden-Powell and Cleanest Campsite Awards. For our service project, we tied down the boards used for seats at the campfire circle to prevent them from flipping up when stepped on. One ASM & myself earned the Leaders Merit badge. We had to introduce ourselves to the camp director & program director, take a nap, etc. to earn this badge. Had 3 Scouts and 1 leader complete Brotherhood and 1 Scout was tapped out. The QM was the SPL from my Troop. The only downside to the week was our Site Guide. We saw him on Sunday at check in & then again on Monday for OA elections. Never saw him again until check out on Saturday. His excuse was he was busy. We saw our sight guide from the prior year more! I told him how I felt & also gave him a poor evaluation. Other than that, we had a gret week! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Bob, On the attack I see. Purely concidential? Glad to see you crystal ball is working & you can see what I do in my Troop so clearly! Since you have not seen my unit function I take you shots as nothing more than blind babbling. We use the patrol method and it works very well. We don't have a NSP since we only have two new Scouts! Besides, the NSP is only a suggestion in the SM handbook, not a requirement. We also don't shoot for FCFY. If a Scout gets FC in a year, great! Once again, this is only a suggestion in the SM handbook, not a requirement. Yes Bob, my Scouts all own handbooks. We give all the new Scouts handbooks when they join the Troop and are required to bring them to all the Troop meetings & camping trips. Once again, you based your opinion on myth instead of fact. Where did I ever say I don't follow the YPG on harassment? I am YP trained (just completed a follow-up course at summer camp) and follow the guidelines & rules of YP. If you consider left-handed smoke shifter hunts or having to sing for lost gear harassment you should get out Webster's & look up the definition of harasment. To me, neither are harassment. And snipe hunts are no more than bird watching. "Hey Bob - I've been away from the site for a few months but thought I'd check it out again and what a surprise - E.M. is still being objectionable to you and everything scouting represents. You are such a trooper to still be patiently interacting with him. I admire your perseverence and tolerance. I was hoping, as I know you were, that you would have succeeded in persuading him to give the "real" scouting method a try. He just might find that it works beautifully. I actually felt bad after my very first post (I showed my annoyance) in response to him months ago but now see that my instinct was right. It's just baffling to me that someone would be so openly and publicly defiant about scouting. Anyway, you still have my support and respect for your - as I said before -SUPERIOR KNOWLEDGE!!!" mommascout, Wow! You really know how I run my unit! What insight! NOT! Your shots are cheaper than Bob's! Do you only consider one way to be correct? If so, then you would function well in a dictatorship. Scouting is not a dictatorship. There are policies etched in stone. There are programs units can choose to follow. There are recommendations on how to set up patrols. There are many variables in Scouting. Unless it is a rule or policy etched in stone, I as a unit leader, have the option to use it or not. By deciding to not use it doesn't (except in your mind) make me or anyone else a bad Scouter. Publically defiant about Scouting? Wow you must be using Bob's crystal ball to looking to something I posted that isn't there! My Troop uses the Patrol Method and it works rather well. My Instructor works with the new Scouts (we only have two) and he is doing a fine job and they are learning & moving along nicely! Scarstic? You bet! Honest? You bet! In the best interest of the Scouts in my Troop? You bet! The 1stword in Boy Scouts is Boy! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

scouterkid, Why are the meetings a chore? Are they boring? What is your position in the Troop? Is your Troop active? Answer these questions so I can get a beeter handle on your situation to make a better decision. In the mean time, don't quit. You are registered until 1/2003 so stick it out until then. Things change. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

When we go to summer camp, we have a "cuss cup". Any foul language, a quarter goes in the cup. This goes for insults, too. What I would do about the untucked shirt is tell the Scout if he doesn't have his shirt tucked in 100% of the time when it comes to have his Scout Spirit requirement signed off it migh not happpen!
