  1. Bob, Statistics aren't the only thing that validates a program. The only reason I kept pushing was you seem to thing the FCFY program is the only way. I don't feel that way. And my unit has a very good retention. FCFY is a program offered by the BSA. A program like many other programs offered by the BSA. Units can choose to participate in the various programs or not participate. If a unit decides not to participate, they are not a poorly run unit. They just choose not to participate in an optional program. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  2. dan, So what you are saying is as long as a Scout pays his dues, he doesn't need to show up for anything and be considered active? And on what page of the SM handbook does it say that? How does this relate to Scout Spirit? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 P.S. I will be on vacation until 8/4. Just didn't want anyone to think I was ducking out. 1 Peter 4:10(This message has been edited by evmori)
  3. little dove, Congrats to your son! And to you. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 P.S. I will be on vacation until 8/4. Just didn't want anyone to think I ducked out.(This message has been edited by evmori)
  4. I had a kid like this. His dad went on every camping trip. I told the dad that I didn't want him to go (he was a registered ASM) because I felt his son needed to be on his own. Both left Scouting. Have you tried splitting them into different patrols? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  5. I reup my Safe Swim Defense every two years & just went through a Youth Protection Training refresher course at summer camp. I haven't attended any other training but do kepp up with the SM manual updates as well as the BS Handbook updates. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  6. The BSA is uniform in this. They have no policy! They expect each unit will use good judgement in dealing with fundraiser profits. And from what I have read, most units do. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  7. For me the conflict would come if I had to do something for my country that was directly against God's law. Example, I am married. If I was told to have sex with a women other than my wife for my country, that would be in direct conflict with my faith. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

NJ, Excellent post! You took most of the words out of my mouth! Jcfraz, Do you know what the word indivisible means? Look it up! If I were your Scoutmaster, I would not let you advance either based on your lack of Scout Spirit. Do you have a problem with the Scout Promise? The word God is in there, too! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  9. acco40, Yes all service should be voluntary. Bad choice of words. Eagle projects are required for the Scout who is working on his Eagle. Service project hours are required for ranks below Eagle. To me there is a difference. I'm just having a hard time explaining it. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  10. OGE, We have always felt Eagle projects are different than service projects. The Eagle candidate recruits the people to help him and helping is completely voluntary. A regular service project is usually undertaken by a Troop or Patrol & while attendance isn't manditory, it is expected. Hope this helps. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

JcFraz, Now I'm really confused. If you don't have a problem saying "under God", why won't you say the pledge? acco40, Sorry. I meant no disrespect. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  13. Glenn, Thanks. I started using it when I was in charge of the sound system at my church & carried it over to Scouting. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  14. We don't count Eagle projects as service hours for rank. Also, if a Scout wants to do things like tutoring, etc. I get more details & contact the person who will be supervising the Scout for more details. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

jcfraz, Thanks for your response. However, you didn't answer my questions. Whether our country supports Christianity like it did in the past (your opinion not mine) is irrevalant. What is important is that you - if you are a Christian - continue to support Christianity regardless of what our country does. This is one nation under God. He created the earth we live on. This is His country. Looking forward to the answers to my questions. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

jcfraz, I went back & re-read your previous posts. You stated you are a Presbyterian. So am I. I believe in God so I must make the assumption you do, too. You also stated saying the pledge especially the phrase "under God" is against you religious beliefs. How so? I propose what you wrote in your post "One Nation Under God Indvisible .... Really?" is not your words. It reads like an article from a publication. Also, since you stated you are about to become a First Class Scout, you must be between 11 to 15 years old. If this is true, what you posted is way above your head for your age. I propose you don't even understand what you are arguing about and are espousing someone else's views. I look forward to your response. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

jcfraz, Where did I cuss? What I posted was a quote and I placed the stars to finish the word because I don't use that kind of language. Posting the entire word would not be in the spirit of Scouting. "One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all" Yes really. What other country can make that claim? None that I know of. What religion are you? Does you religion believe in God? If so, then how can saying the pledge be against your religious beliefs? I am confused. You said the pledge as you joining requirement, correct? What is the problem now? And is the problem yours or someone elses? I am proud to be an American. I love this country. I feel saying the pledge my way of saying thanks to all the men & women who have fought and died defending my freedom. "One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all" You better believe it! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  19. Ditto smaster101. All excellent points. If the Scout didn't attend any of the pre-camp stuff, he shouldn't be allowed to go! I know we don't want to deprive anyone of the summer camp experience but when it becomes detrimental to other Scouts in the Troop then it becomes harmful and a dangerous precident can be set. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  20. I'm not sure I but into the theory that kids forget more with a longer summer vacation. IMHO, the first couple of weeks should be review weeks. This will help the students get on track and also help the teacher know where the students are in relationship to the subject. Having short breaks throughout the year would seem to increas the "burn out" problem. We all need our batteries recharged. A summer vacation for kids is a great way to kick back & enjoy being a kid! "So, Your Honor, the Pledge is unconstitutional because it says 'Under God'. Guess that means when you were sworn in with your hand on a Bible, and at the end of your oath repeated, 'So Help Me God' that makes your job unconstitutional , therefore you have no job, which means your ruling doesn't mean s***." Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  22. One more thing. "So, Your Honor, the Pledge is unconstitutional because it says 'Under God'. Guess that means when you were sworn in with your hand on a Bible, and at the end of your oath repeated, 'So Help Me God' that makes your job unconstitutional , therefore you have no job, which means your ruling doesn't mean s***." 23. scottsmom121, I was a Cubmaster for three years before moving onto Boy Scouts. The reason I took on the job was I felt the prior CM was useless. The Pack meetings were boring & not attended very well. The Cubs love getting stuff. While I was CM, my wife & I came up with interesting ceremonies & ways to present the arrow points, rank badges, activity pins, etc. We made it fun. We included the Tigers in every Pack meeting & they received their awards like the rest of the Pack. It sound like the guy who was CM only took the job because no one else would. That;s not good & the only ones who suffer are the kids. The Cub program is supposed to be fun & a learning experience at the same time. If it isn't & they don't receive the awards they earned, then the Pack will suffer & the kids will probably drop out. I'm not sure how the structure of the Cub program works now but when I was getting ready to step down, I hand picked my replacement. The Committee went along with my choice. I think the committee can make the decision to not accept the new CM. Cubs is mor transient than Boy Scouts. Finding leaders is more of a full time job. I don't understand why someone would remove or move a leader from a position as long as they haven't violated any laws or BSA regs. The only reason that would be valid to me is that the persons talents could be better used in another position. Good luck! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  24. hikindad welcome! In my Troop, we use attendance as a measure of a Scout being active. We have set up guidelines for the Scout with positions of responsibility. You can check them out at http://www.bsa.net/pa/t1 Go to the Positions of Responsibility page. As far as the Scouts who don't have a position, I expect them to be at at least 75% of the Troop meetings and outings. To me, this goes hand in hand with Scout Spirit & being active.
