Bob, Correct. My mistake. You said attendance has nothing to do with Scout spirit. I disagree. How does a Scout show Scout spirit by doing the minimum requirements? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

eisely, I agree completely. The more press the BSA gets, the better. I don't consider most things that come from the SF area to be viable. Actually, the only thing I really liked from the SF are was the music that came out in the '60's. The Jefferson Airplane rock! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Bob, Yes I do mean to beat a dead horse by asking this. I'm a lot like Ted Koppel when someone doesn't answer a question. Where does it state the First Class Emphasis is a required BSA Program? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Bob, Gotta ask. If a Scout shows up for one meeting and no events and has completed all the requirements for rank, is this showing Scout spirit? Is he living according to the Oath & Law? Should he be advanced like the Scouts who show up for all the meeting & events? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Stick around at the district level. I'm sure someone with your skill & abilities can be very useful to the district. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

netscouter, Nice Site. Easy to move around & easy on the eyes. A couple suggestions: 1) Make the table under Welcome to Troop 5 Online bigger to fit the font or make the font smaller to fit the cell. 2) On the picture pages, try making them thumbnails. If people want to see them, they can click the ones they want to see. It will also help the page to load faster. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

ASM7, Don't agree. If you read the two versions of creation in the bible in the book of Genesis you will see no evidence of evolution. The theory of evolution claims animals & humans evolved from a simple life form when the creation states all things were created by God. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

The summer camp my Troop attends (Heritage Reservation) has two publis phones in each camp. One is for leader use only & the other is for the Scouts & staff. If a Scout wants to use the phone, he must have a leader from his Troop with him. Leader, not parent. I have always liked this rule since it discourages the Scouts form calling home or anywhere else. I split this off from the God or Country? thead. How did we as humans come to be? For me it is in the bible. God created us & continues to create new humans every day. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

New Trouble in Troop w/ Picky Eater

I'm not real big on kicking kids out of Scouting. Kids like this need the program. That's why I would suspend the Scout. It is possible he will be remorseful & a suspension is all he needs to get his head on straight. But if he isn't remorseful & mom feels he is not being treated fairly, then he won't come back. Either way, the problem is resolved & you can move on. I would also advise my DE of the situation since he/she will probably get a call or letter about it. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
supermom, In my Troop, the new adult leaders who crossed over from Cubs are given minimal responsibilities until they have completed training for their position. Until they do, I and my ASM's will often sit down & discuss the hows & whys of Scouting. At times, I will include these new adults as passive listeners for Scoutmaster Conferences as long as the SMC isn't for their son. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Ditto to what Bob posted. I will tell the Scout who is transfering to have his new SM call me & then I will send his records to the new Troop. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

New Trouble in Troop w/ Picky Eater

I wouldn't kick them out. I would suspend the Scout for 30 to 60 days for what he did to the toad & everything else you said. I would advise mom (and dad) of the decision and tell them in order for their son to be able to return to the Troop, he must set up a meeting with the SM & CC to discuss his behavior & why it was wrong. If he doesn't seen remorseful then I would not let him back in the Troop until he does. Chances are he won't come back for the meeting after he has been suspended. And I wouldn't go looking for him either. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
NJ, Can't give you any examples. Since you believe in God as a concept perhaps you could explain how we as humans came to be. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

I always offer my services to my Scouts for their Eagle projects, but I tell them I am only there as a worker. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Yeah, you guys are right. It's easy to hide a habit you want no one else to know about. I think the key is educating people about the hazards of drug use & abuse. I don't feel it is the job of the BSA to do this, though. There are programs in schools & elsewhere that deal with this issue. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Picky Eater / Mother's Apron Strings

little dove, It's time to lay down the law. I would get a meeting together with the SM, CC & COR to discuss a plan of action. The only thing this mom is doing is creating havoc in the Troop. Another option might be to not advance the Scout based on lack of Scout Spirit. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
No electronic games or radios whatsoever! The adults do bring cell phones, pagers & two-way radios but these are used as communication tools. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Bob, Thanks for the invitation, but my Troop meeting are the same night so I won't be able to attend yours. If I am ver in the midwest & figure out where you are located, I will stop in, though. Onec again you put words in my mouth. When did I ever say I don't do things the Scouting way? Or did you come to this conclusion on your own because I choose not to use some of the optional programs the BSA offers? Does my Troop use the Patrol method? Yes. Is my Troop "boy run?" Yes. Do I as a leader keep up on the changes to BSA policy & procedures? Yes. Are the Scouts the reason I am here? Yes. Do I interpret everything that is in the BSA manuals as gospel? No. There are many things that are suggestions & ideas that are there as resources. Do I follow the BSA rules & regs? Yes. Now, back to my question you keep on side stepping - Where does it say the First Class Emphasis is a required BSA program? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
-
Bob, I know the page number. I still can't find the word required associated with the First Class Emphasis. You must have a different Scoutmaster Handbook than I do. I can't find anything under New Scout Patrol (You know the page number) that says First Class Emphasis is a key goal. There is a statement that refers to some Troops integrating new Scouts into reqular patrols after 3 to 6 months, though. Tracking sheets are not used to administer programs. Tracking sheets are used to do exactly what they say - track individual progress. And just because a program has a tracking sheet doesn't mean it is required. If that were the case, all units would be required to participate in the popcorn sale. My unit does because it helps the Scouts earn money for summer camp as well as the council. Special certificates are great, too but they don't make a program required either. I hope your little story about the flood was a tongue-in-cheek story. If not, I find it offensive. Back to my original question, where does it say it FCFY is required? I consider it optional. Also, since I only have 2 new Scouts, I am not one of the many Troops who have a New Scout Patrol. If you are going to quote requirements I suggest you make sure they are requirements. And yes Bob, I have the manuals. I have attended training. I have been on my district training staff. I'm not waiting for anything. Maybe you should get your head out of the books & get into the field where the boys are & find out if every program the BSA has is used by every unit. I'll bet you find units use the programs that best suit their units. So, what are you waiting for! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

NJ, Read my post of 7/23/2002. This is a valid conflict. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Bob, Where is it written that FCFY is required? I can't find it. Actually, I can't find a specific reference to FCFY as a program in the Scoutmaster Handbook. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

I don't feel this is necessary. It isn't hard to figure out if someone is on drugs. It's sort of like knowing if someone is an alcholic. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
