A "plug" for the Guide to Safe Scouting

I don't see where paddleboating is a violation in the G2SS? Can someone help me on this? Thanks Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
Court rules Pledge of Allegiance 'unconstitutional'
evmori replied to sctmom's topic in Issues & Politics
It also seems everyone forgets that the government cannot stop someone from professing their faith. This seems to be put on the back burner because we are too interested in taking God out of our everyday life. Having the Ten Commandments on a court house wall is no more establishing a religion than Congress is by allowing each session to open with prayer. That is a right afforded by the 1stAmmendment & forcing someone to take down a religious plaque or forcing Congress to stop praying would be in direct violation of the 1st Ammendment therefore illegal! Court rules Pledge of Allegiance 'unconstitutional'
evmori replied to sctmom's topic in Issues & Politics
Folks, The phrase "separation of church & state" appears nowhere in the Constitution or Bill of Rights. This is an interpretation by the Supreme Court based on statements made by Thomas Jefferson. Actually, separation of church & state is a violation of the 1st Ammendment of the Constitution. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
Does the Webelos program really prepare them?
evmori replied to sctmom's topic in Open Discussion - Program
sctmom, It's sort of like going from middle school to high school. When kids move to a higher level they are expected to do more on their own. This can be tough for some kids. Scouting is no different. Cub Scouts is run by the adults while giving the boys a sense of working together as a group. Boy Scouts is run by the boys with the adults as advisors. They still work together as a group but the main difference is they get to make their own decisions. They learn by making mistakes. The fun element is still their but what isn't is the adults planning the entire program. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
Hello Loki, The adult patrol in my Troop is call the Basshole Patrol. Why you ask? One of our adult leaders had a tee shirt with a picture of a bass on it and there was a hole in the bass picture. We now use it as our patrol flag! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

The entire Bible is fact. Not parts. The entire book. We must remember that there are stories (parables) used as teaching tools by Jesus. The stories might not be true but they were told by Jesus. Now someone might say (and probably will) that my prior statement is not true. Well it is. It is because the stories were told not whether they are true or not. In my Troop after the Scoutmaster Conference, I tell the Scout to let our Advancement Chairman know he is ready for his BOR. The Advancement Chairman then schedules the BOR & let's the Scout know when it will be. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

A "plug" for the Guide to Safe Scouting

NJ, Excellent point. And hopefully the council will catch this & turn down the permit. However, it sort of sounds like even if they do, the trip might go on. The G2SS is really common sense. I keep a copy with me at all times (well not at work but all other times) and I have referred my Scouts to it when they want to do something like paintball. The other implication is the Troop/Pack insurance won't cover these kind of activities! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
911 For me this is a defining moment in my life. I remember exactly what I was doing & where I was when it happened. I also remember when I got home I got a call from my wife's pen pal in South Africa to see if we were OK. She heard about the plane that crashed in Shanksville, PA & was worried about us. I remember my daughter coming home from school. I met her on the porch. We hugged & cried. I remember finally getting ahold of my son at college. We talked & cried. I remember my wife getting home from work. She works in a hospital & had to stay. We hugged & cried. Then my daughter, my wife & myself knelt down & prayed. Our flag was flying outside. I went to the church where my Troop meets & got another flag and put it up. For us, it was a very somber day. Yet, we were glad we are Americans & knew the people who did this failed at their ultimate goal. We were closer as a nation. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Close the account now! Open a new account at another bank & require at least two signatures on every check. Plus, make sure the two signers are not in the same family. Then, develop a policy where all expenses must be approved by the CC & treasurer. This should help ensure this doesn't happen again. As for what you have lost so far, I would approach the lady & request she repay the money she stole. If she refuses, then you choices are simple. 1. Take her to small claims court. 2. Count your losses & consider it a learning experience. It really stinks when this happens & it can destroy the trust in a Pack or Troop. Don't let that happen. 1. Get all the training required. 2. Ensure all your adults are trained for their positions. 3. Plan, plan plan. 4. Get in contact with local Troops & develop a good working relationship with them. 5. And last & most important, have fun & make it fun for the boys! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Gang, While brandishing a bag of urine is a lot different than brandishing a gun, both could be considered a threat. And if one of the Scouts who was the brandishee told his parents this upset him and mom & dad made a stink, heads could roll! It's all in how you interpret the policy! That's where the real debate is! By the way, I think the brandishing a bag of urine was very creative! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

sctmom, In yours and yaworski's scenario the mom used the F word and the SM handled the situation well. In my Troop, anyone using the F word goes home. Adult or Scout. And since it seems mom in this case is a wonderful influence to her son, I can only assume more happened at camp than we know. I respect the Troop for not embelishing on what happened. And form the last post of ScoutPaul, mom seems to be unreasonable. This boy needs the Scouting program. The only problem I see in any Troop he will join is mom. The reason I say this is it seems she has the attitude "my son has a a problem that causes all his other problems" and he does no wrong. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

I gotta agree that these are two different situations. OGE's son was using a method to get something done and the other Scout was trying to get a rise out of another Scout. But one could argue that both methods are inappropriate. I don't think they are but the arguement could be made. I like the way OGE's son handled the situation. I stated this before. Something happened on this camping trip that we don't know about. Mom says her son loved Cubs & excelled. Mom also states her son is completely mainstreamed and is an honor student. I think what possibly happened is this Scout became homesick. Remember, he just crossed over in May and this could be the 1st time he has ever been away from mom and dad (if there is a dad). And soiling himself could be his way of showing his homesickness. He also got into a fight because he was teased. Probably about his soiling. So one thing led to another and now the boy is not allowed back in the Troop. This kid needs Scouts. The council offered to put him in a Troop with other disabled Scouts but mom said no because this is where his friends are. Hmm. I can understand the frustration of the Scoutmaster. And his was well within his right to expel the boy from his Troop because of the fighting incident. If this Scout was in my Troop, I would have probably suspended him. If not, I would have a very long discussion with the mother, my CC, my COR & Unit Commissioner to hack out what all this boys problems are & what needs to be done to handle them. It is very possible the Troop he is (was) in is not equipped to handles them & there is nothing wrong with that. It might also be that Boy Scouts is not for this boy. Merit badge counseling and two deep leadership?
evmori replied to Zorn Packte's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Bob, Good post. Couple things. Merit badge counselors can be Scouters. I am a counselor fot 10 merit badges. Merit badge counselors do pay the $10 registration fee. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
I read this, too. It seems that something happened on the camping trip that triggered the Scout's actions mentioned in the article. The reason I say this is from what his mother says about him in the article. While there is a valid reason to toss him out of the Troop (in the version I read from a Kentucky paper http://www.sentinelnews.com/sentinelnews/myarticles.asp?H=1&S=507&P=392212&PubID=7346 said he was fighting) I don't necessarly think he needs to be kicked out of the Troop. There is a follw-up article stating that the council will be training leaders on dealing with special needs kids. Like I said, something else happened. Did the Scout have his ADD medicine with him and was he taking it? Did the mom inform the Troop her son was ADD? If so, did she send his medication with him? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

In my council, we get 39% of the total sale. The Scouts get 75% of that & the Troop gets 25%. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

stressbaby, Welcome! A founding SM is no different than any other SM. The Troop must function according to the rules & regs the BSA has in place. Has this SM been through training? If not, I suggest he get there. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
