I feel one of the reason is Boy Scouts is very different than Cubs. The boys are expected to do more for themselves & a lot of them don't like it! Just my opinion. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

How can one subscibe to the Scout Oath & law while being an atheist? How can one do their duty to God if they believe there is no God? I'm sure we have all not lived up to one or more of the Scout laws at some point. The thing here is Mr. Lambert being an atheist can't possible live according to the Oath & Law. He admitted he mouthed the "duty to God" part of the Oath & is certainly not being Reverent. Trustworthy is also in question. It's a combination of these that make his expulsion manditory. I also question if his Scouting requirements were handles in a trustworthy manner considering his behavior was condoned by his Troop. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Should Darrell Lambert have his Eagle Rank revoked?

ScouterPaul, Thanks for the info. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
IMHO, homosexuality is a lifestyle. And the BSA saying that homosexuals can't be members is saying the BSA doesn't approve of this lifestyle. Is that discrimination? It could be viewd as that. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Should Darrell Lambert have his Eagle Rank revoked?
evmori replied to dan's topic in Issues & Politics
red feather, Did he earn it? From what I read his Eagle BOR was done at the Troop level with a district person involved. I was of the understanding the District Advancement Committee was to hold Eagle BOR's & there was to be no one from the candidate's home Troop on the board. If in fact Mr. Lambert did earn his Eagle, it was under false pretenses. He claims he has been an atheist since 9th grade and has mouthed his way through the Oath. Plus, how can he do his "duty to God" if he believes there is no God? Mr. Lambert's Eagle should be revoked. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
I know I've asked this before but I'm gonna ask ask again. Where in the Conctitution does it say anything about the separation of church & state? The 1st Amendment guarantees religious freedom & guarantees the state will not establish a religion but nowhere does it say there needs to be separation of the two. Yes it shouldbe revoked. It was earned under false pretenses. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
This is a good thing. Now, considering somehow this person advanced through the Scouting ranks being an atheist his Eagle should be revoked. Sure the board should have questioned him about his statement & maybe shouldn't have given it to him. But they didn't. They were wrong. However, Mr. Lambert stated he has been an atheist since he was I think 9 years old! He was living a lie in Scouting! He is not Eagle material! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

meatball, Welcome! Interesting situation. Does you district or council offer a JLT training program? My district runs a program titled LLT (Learning Leadership Training). You can check out the course at http://www.bsa.net/pa/t1. Click on the LLT link. If so, get the Scout to it. Also, is the SM trained? If not, get him to training. He will see the light. kwc57, Excellent point! Wish I would have thought of it. Take Rooster's advice. Common sense are two words Merlyn doesn't seem to know. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Merlyn, Yes I know what the courts have said on this. I realize we could debate on this & never reach an agreement. That's why I enjoy this forum. OK. Let's assume the BSA does discriminate (I don't think they do). How does what the BSA does differ from any private organization that has membership requirements? If you don't meet the requirements you can't join or can be expelled! To me, it's pretty simple. The Armed Forces can boot you out if you don't meet their requirements! Merlyn, Sorry I was away for awhile that's why I didn't respond to your post. "The constitution. The government can't run a "no atheists" group any more than it can run a "no Jews" group." Where is this addressed in the Constitution? Probably the same place where there is no mention of the separation of church & state. I personally don't care whether you are a Scout, former Scout, etc. or not or even what you hope to gain by your posts. If you are like me, this is a forum for debate. Pros/Cons of Women/Girls in Boy Scouting
evmori replied to Annalisa's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Women as adult leaders - yes. Girls as Scouts - no. Boys between the ages of 11 & 17 are more prone to hold back around girls. This would effect them in Scouting. Besides, there is Girl Scouts. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -

"But when a government agency charters a BSA unit, they're running a "no atheists" youth group, which is unlawful." And it says this is unlawful where? Since the BSA is a private organization their members must meet the requirements of the organization. Atheists don't so they can't join. The Supreme Court even agreed.! Bob, Thanks for the correction on the charter. Excellent post, by the way. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

If multiple counselors are available then that's great! It's not interpretation. IN the Boy Scout Handbook it says "Obtain from the Scoutmaster a signed merit badge application and the name of a qualified counselor for that merit badge." No interpretation is necessary. The Scoutmaster give the Scout a signed blue card & merit badge counselor name. That's what it says! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

"If you want a private, discriminatory organization, get used to losing special government support." Merlyn, I would bet all branches of the military would like to have platoons of Eagle Scouts. Yes it is private but not discriminatory. And as far as loosing government support, I don't think that will happen. Remember, the BSA has a federal charter. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
