  1. Good rant Brent. The uniform is only ONE of the methods. OFFICIAL POLICY The leaders of Scoutingboth volunteer and professionalpromote the wearing of the correct complete uniform on all suitable occasions. I don't see the word require in that OFFICIAL POLICY do you Brent? Promote doesn't equal require. And if you feel allowing a Scout to wear the uniform shirt & not requiring the official pants is "watering down" the program, then I would say your focus is in the wrong place.
  2. Why are we considering coddling this kid? Regardless of the reasons for what he did, there should be consequences for his actions. And they should be immediate. The longer you wait to deal with this the less of an impact it will have. Strike while the iron is hot!
  3. Our district Eagle board of review says to either wear the full uniform, or come dressed as you would for a job interview. Well, requiring a full uniform is adding to the requirements. And what type of job interview are we talking about? Flipping burgers at the food court or working in an office or digging ditches? The attire would be different for each. If a Scout shows up for his EBOR in a pair of nice jeans with clean sneakers and a polo shirt on, that is neat in appearance.
  4. This is real simple. The Scout calls mom & dad to come pick him up immediately. And when mom & dad get there, let them know with little Johnny present, he has been suspended from the Troop for 60 days and the only way he will be allowed back is if he is truly remorseful and apologizes to the Scout he injured with the entire Troop present. This type of behavior can not be tolerated. Oh yeah, ya might as well let mom & dad know that there could be repercussions from the injured Scouts parents. Then you as the Scoutmaster have a sit down with the rest of the Troop. This isn't a discussion. It is a lecture by the Scoutmaster detailing how this type of behavior is not permitted in this Troop or civilized society.
  5. Bet y'all know what I am going to say! Until the BSA requires the uniform to be a member, requiring Scouts to wear one is verboten! Now, in Stosh's case, it seems the gold nuggets were given out because Scouts were in uniform. The way I read it is the nuggets were given out because these Scouts went over and above what was required. Nothing wrong with rewarding that!
  6. The ASM is incorrect. MB's can be completed anytime before the Scout needs them to advance.
  7. Brent, Based on this The Scout should be neat in his appearance; however, a uniform is not required. Local boards of review may not make up their own rules about wearing a uniform. I would say no to all you questions.
  8. If I read OGE's post correctly, the uniform is not required for ANY BOR. And actually, it never has been!
  9. In other words, Leadership 101.! I thought General Potter was a gem!
  10. And there goes Merlyn rattling the sabers again! This has nothing to do with the BSA and the Merlyn's only purpose in posting this was so he could bash the BSA! Yeah I know, Merlyn, I'm putting words in your mouth! Deal with it!
  11. Thanks OGE. That would make requiring a uniform at a BOR adding to the requirements! Just to clarify a little. I love the uniform. Own a few and I do wear them. If I am sitting on a EBOR, I will be in uniform. I do think the uniform should be required to be a member.
  12. New sewage pump for Heritage! Ya ain't spent a week at summer camp unless you are down wind of the sewage pump at Heritage!
  13. How in the world does this violate any YP rule? Violates the two-deep policy? Horse hockey!
  14. Isn't EDGE just another reiteration of old training under a new snazzy acronym?
  15. You are on the right track, bchan. A Klondike or Camporee would be a great way for the WEBELOS to get a little taste of Boy Scouts.
  16. A Scoutmaster "signs-off" on the Scout Spirit requirement by what he puts on the Eagle application. UNIT APPROVAL (personal signatures required) Signature of unit leader____________________________________ Scoutmaster, Coach or Advisor My interpretation is that if a Scoutmaster does not feel the Eagle applicant "worthy" for whatever reason, they should not give "approval" by signing the application. I would agree with acco on this. Also, the Scout Spirit requirement should not be signed-off either.
  17. First, I really never saw any one tell me what they would do other than "work with him." - I really do have a problem with this approach. One, it is so incredibly vague it really doesn't say anything. Remember, he already is working with a mental health professional. What else are you going to do? I'm the one who posted "work with him" and yes it is vague. Why? I have no idea who this Scout is or what he is like. Once I make that determination, I would be able to give you a "less vague" answer. Is this mental health pro a swimming expert? Has this mental health pro ever taught anyone to swim? I have been a swimming MB counselor for over 20 years and I am a very good swimmer and I lost count of how many kids I helped learn to swim. Finally, This scout is now 22 and a Scouter. He is finally able to get into water up to his shoulders, but still has a panic attack if the water is as deep as his ears. He does actually swim. He built a lap lane into the pool at his house that is only 5 feet deep and is currently trying to find out if anything will prevent him from earning the mile swim award. He usually doesn't tell people about this little issue anymore, and usually no one even notices. Apparently this wasn't a permanent condition.
  18. What do you do with a young boy who has a "severe irrational fear" of water that goes over his knees? Lets even say that he has a clinically diagnosed phobia and is working with a psychiatrist to overcome his fear. Work with him to help him overcome his fear. Question - How young is this boy?
  19. Nice site, smdscouts. Mot sure I see the point, though.
  20. Knowing and understanding your limitations is much more important than proving you can swim a 100 yards. Great statement! One problem. Most kids have no idea what their limitations are. They see their buddys in the deep end of the pool and want to join them! But they can't swim. Sissing down the requirement will not help. It will only hurt.
  21. This has been happening for about a week now.
