  1. Bob, So smoking is different thab drugs, alcohol & controlled substances which are banned? Nice to see you finally noticed. And out of sight of youth is not a policy just a recommendation since it isn't in bold print? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  2. Bob, Using your requirement that all unalterable policy is in bold print does that mean the stuff not in blod print can be altered? Reason I ask is the part about not smoking around the Scouts isn't in bold print in the G2SS. Don't take this as my supporting smoking in front of the Scouts, I'm just asking. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  3. I think we need Bob White to give us chapter & verse from the BSA. Bob, you out there? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  4. The requirement states "list 5 people who would be willing to give a reference if asked". Nowhere does it says letters of recommendation are required. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  5. Try http://usscouts.org. Thay have a lot of good ceremonies. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  6. Folks, At roundtable on Wednesday, we were informed there are many local merchants who are holding fundraisers to help Mike & his family. Mike, in addition to everything else, has a broken collarbone. He can feel the pain from time to time. While a broken collarbone is not good, him able to feel the pain is encouraging. Thanks for all you prayers and concerns. I'll keep you posted as I hear things. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  7. The Eagle candidate and his family are not required to get the letters of recomendation. This is the responsibility of the District advancement committee. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  8. I feel a role model is more how you are than what you do. Do you steal? Are you a liar? Things like that. More so than being a smoker or overweight. Also, how you treat people is important. I would rather have a fat smoker who is honest & forthright than a skinny non-smoker who always looks for ways to "get around" stuff. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  9. The key to successful Webelos transition is a good working relationship with the Pack. Give the Pack a copy of your Troop calendar. Include the Webelos in any campout you can. Get together with the Cubmaster for coffee to discus things. Be a part of the Pack Blue & Gold. Plan the crossover for the 2nd year Webelos. Supply the Pack with Den Chiefs. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10(This message has been edited by evmori)
  10. scoutldr, Why do you say smokers are questionalbe role models? Would the same apply to overweight people? How about people who drink? And what about speeders? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  11. packsaddle, I understand the harmful effects of 2nd hand smoke to those with asthema & other like conditions. The wording matters. If the BSA wanted to ban tobacco products all they would have to do is say tobacco product are banned. Simple. but they didn't do that. They left the door open for individual unit interpretation. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  12. Alcohol & drugs are not the same as tobacco. The policy doesn't say smoking is prohibited. Once again you seem to think because it is written in a BSA manual it is gospel. Well guess what, you are wrong. If the BSA wanted to ban smoking all they had to do was say smoking is banned or smoking is prohibited. But they didn't. The BSA does prohibit alcohol, drugs and controlled substances. Not tobacco products! Read it again! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 (This message has been edited by a staff member.)
  13. Actually Bob, I didn't say either way. I don't feel alcohol, drugs and controlled substances should be lumped in the same catagory as tobacco. Alcohol, drugs & most controlled substances can (and usually do) immediate danger. Tobacco on the other hand only poses a danger to the user. I know all the theories about 2nd hand smoke. So to answer your question Al, I think it is a good rule. I also feel if the BSA wants to prohibit smoking, they should day so and not say may not. And don't forget, the policy only addresses activities where youth are present. So, if there are no youth, light 'em up! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  14. I'm not a quiter. I would have fought tooth & nail. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  15. While Bob makes a valid point that the bold type is unalterable policy, the words may not do not mean will not. Bob & I have gone round & round and someone even sent a previous thread to my DE. My DE called me & told me while the words are in bold print the wording is not definitive. Therefore, the powers that be in my neck of the woods disagree with Bob's powers that be. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  16. btps, Because that is the most convenient for them & us. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  17. marty, Remember the most important thing - Make it fun by having fun! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  18. We are having our Scout Sunday on February 23rd & we are chartered by a Methodist church. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  19. merlyn, in your one post you state "the KKK legally discriminates, yet it would be just as legal for them to use a HUD grant to solicit membership in THEIR club." Why is this legal & the BSA use of the same funds illegal? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  20. acco, I was always told if you are going out of the USA, a local tour permit is not good regardless of how far you are traveling. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  21. Cubs or Webelos are not allowed to participate in Boy Scout camporees. They can however camp under their guidelines in the same camp as Boy Scouts and hold their own separate camporee. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  22. "Very unlikely; the KKK legally discriminates, yet it would be just as legal for them to use a HUD grant to solicit membership in THEIR club. This isn't about the BSA as a private, discriminatory organization; it's about using public tax money in the form of a HUD grant, which comes with very stringent nondiscrimination strings attached for the USE of that money, and violating the terms of using that money." And the KKK isn't a discriminatory organizations yet it would be legal for them to do the same thing? Now the legaleze has really confused me! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  23. Saddam is a threat to the world because Saddam is only interested in Saddam. He has violated every restriction the UN has placed on him. I heard he has moved weapons to another country in the Middle East. Sounds like he is trying to hide them. Saddam must go for the good of the rest of the world. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  24. Not sure who posted it but I agree with the deeds not the person is what we should look to as a role model. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  25. This is for Tom Keller from MA. Tom, please send me a personal message about your phone call. Someone needs to contact you. Thanks Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
