  1. scoutmom, Congrats to your son! It's always nice to see the new Scouts so energetic about the program! Hey, he will be fine away from you. I think it will be harded on you than him and that's, too! Just encourage him to have fun! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  2. Bob, You're correct. My mistake. That requirement would have already been signed off. My bad! All your "If" in your post in you perfect Troop would never happen but they could in even a Troop run as well as yours. Things fall through the cracks. And since attendance is not supposed to be an issue and this is a boy run organization it is possible that no one ever told you as SM this Scout wasn't at meetings and it is possible for a SM to not notice. But I know this would never happen in your Troop. "Scouts don't do everything up to Eagle and leave for no reason." And you have proof this is a fact? How about they now have a girlfriend & want to spend all their waking hours together? Oh, and by the way, you never answered why you thought this sounded too real? 3. mk9750, The point I am trying to make is that not everything in Scouting fits in a nice little box like some people on this board think. This situation is outside the box. I would not immediatly sign off on Scout Spirit for this hypothetical Scout. I would talk to him & observe him for awhile until I am satisfied he is living by the Scout Oath & Law. From Star on up it is required to "Be active ...." and if this hypothetical Scout's only reason for not coming to Troop meeting was "I didn't want to" then that's not active & that's not Scout Spirit! 4. YoungBlood, I was in error. You are correct regarding open sailing & boating. Thanks for the correction. I should have gone into more detail with my answer. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  5. packsaddle, Nope. Programmer. What do you mean by "a wee bit to convincing"? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  6. YoungBlood, For a Scout to be able to go canoeing or sailing at a Scout camp, he must have earned swimming merit badge. EagleWB, Excellent point. If "without aids" means any aids then I would have to correct my earlier post and state the Scout should not be considered a swimmer unless he can pass the swimming test without the nose plug and goggles. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  7. No Bob. Purely hypothetical. Does this remind you of a real Troop? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  8. Bob, Maybe you don't understand ny point. There is nothing wrong with the leadership in the Troop. The Troop has a lot of active Scouts and lots of activities. The hypothetical Scout earned Life then just decided he didn't want to go to Scouts anymore. Then after he looked over his records he realized all he had to do for Eagle was complete his project & have his SM signoff on his Scout Spirit. Would you signoff on this Scout Scout Spirit? How did he earn all his requirements? By completing them. Simple answer, huh? No the Troop leadership wasn't in a coma. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  9. The patrols have a cook kit, utensils, fire starts, matches, cutting board, etc. The adults has everthing you would ever need or want on a campout. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  10. YoungBlood, I agree and also feel they should be able to do it with and without the devices. But nowhere in the merit badge requirement does it state that have to. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  11. 1)no and for Star it is 4 months. 2) yes 3) no Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  12. dan, I wouldn't immediatly. I would see how he does after some time after his return. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  13. Yes. There is no requirement for the badge that states you can't use this kind of equipment. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  14. Scenerio 1 - Would say nothing at the time considering the person telling the joke was impaired and might react in an adverse manner. I would say something the next day, though. Scenario 2 - same as #1. Scenario 3 - Joe's manager is violating his civil rights. Joe should keep his plans & have someone who is knowledgable of the reason for the meeting attend the meeting. I have never like Diversity Training. It seems these type of things always take the vanilla approach to life. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  15. Folks, I know attendance does not equal Scout Spirit and the situation I am refering to is 100 % hypothetical. What I want to know is if given the situation, would you sign off on Scout Spirit and why. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  16. Folks, I know attendance does not equal Scout Spirit and the situation I am refering to is 100 % hypothetical. What I want to know is if given the situation, would you sign off on Scout Spirit and why. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  17. Being a swimming merit badge counselor, I know of nothing that says he can't wear nose plugs & goggles. If he comletes the swimming requirement for a swimmer, he is a swimmer. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  18. OK what if there is no problem with your Troop & the kid was absent for a year and the only reason he gave was he didn't feel like coming to Scouts. You sit him down to talk to him & all he says is "I just didn't feel like coming to Scouts. Now I want to get my Eagle". All his requirements are completed except no one has signed off on his Scout Spirit. Does this Scout meet the Scout Spirit requirement? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  19. OK new thread! Now, using the scenerio in the other Invisible Scout thread, if the Scout who returns and wants to earn his Eagle tells you the absolute only reason he hasn't been around is because he didn't feel like it. He tells you it had nothing to do with the Troop or leadership or other Scouts, he just wasn't in the mood. Would this be considered showing Scout Spirit? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  20. eisley, Thanks. You are correct. I was using an old expression! Bob, If a Scout does mess up the latrine on purpose, I don't think it is a mistake. And it should be dealt with appropriately. And by making him clean the mess he created, that is appropriate. In Scouts, we are to help prepare these young men for life. By helping them realize there are consequences for their actions, they will be better prepared for life. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  21. I have always felt the consequences should fit the crime. If a Scout purposefully messes up the latrine, he should clean that latrine. Naturally, the SM should have a discussion with this Scout to explain there are consequences for his actions & so forth. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  22. Bob, All excellent reasons for not being at Troop meetings and other Scout activities. Now, what about the Scout who didn't attend just because he didn't want to. No other reason. No sick people to take care of, etc. And you talked to him & he told you "I haven't been coming to Troop meetings because I didn't feel like it". Nothing more. How would this relate to Scout Spirit? asm7, My Troop doesn't have any attendance requirements unless the Scout is in a position of responsibility. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  23. Bob, Doesn't need to not because of any of the reasons you listed but because he just doesn't want to! How would this be showing Scout Spirit? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  24. Punishment - Any pain, suffering, or loss inflicted on a person because of a crime or offense. Sending a Scout home due for any reason could be considered a loss or suffering. To me, punishment is a result behavior. If a Scout steals, the his punishment might be making ammends for the stolen property. Corporal punishment is never allowed.
