  1. red feather, Letters of recommendation are not required. The requirement on the Eagle application says to list 5 people who would be willing to give the Eagle candidate a recommendation if requested. Sometimes reading between the line helps! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  2. My Troop site isn't at Scouter.com but the problem might be th file extension on you main page. If Scouter.com requires *.html & the software you use saves as *.htm, then yo uwill see a blank. This can usually be corrected by renaming the file once you have uploaded it to Scouter.com. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  3. YoungBlood, I believe you! I was just giving what I have experienced! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  4. MArk, Maybe I am pushing the envelope a little. Just trying to make a point that there are things in the program that fall into a gray area that are not as well defined as others. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  5. In all my years in Scouting, I have only seen one Scout who was deathly afraid of the water. He never overcame this fear. We could never figure out why. Nose clips, googles, water wings, PFD's, etc. would not have helped. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  6. WOW! People on this board can read the minds of the Scouts in my Troop! We go bowling for fun! No other reason is infered or given. Ed Mori Scoutmaster (Not clairvoyant) Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  7. Bob, I have read the Scout Handbook. Many times. I'll ask again - Where does it say attendance is not part of Scout Spirit? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  8. Bob, OK. Show me where in any BSA publication where it says attendance is not part of Scout Spirit. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  9. Bob, Nice post. However, I don't see the purpose of the post. Are you saying there is something wrong with having fun just for fun sake in Scouting? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  10. Congrats to your son & you. Ditto to what everyone else has posted about the letter. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  11. No. I would let him do the test with the nose plugs & goggles. I would then tell him he needs to complete the test without the nose plugs & goggles. I have never run into this situation in Boy Scouts. Cubs yes but Boy Scouts, no. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  12. How about fun just to have fun! We go cosmic bowling once a year as a Troop. Why? Beacause the Scouts like it! Is there a purpose? Yep, to have fun! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  13. packsaddle, I have been on Eagle boards where the candidate answered the question "Why do you want to be an Eagle Scout?" with "It looks good on a college appliaction". This candidate was denied his Eagle by the board mainly because of that answer. Bob, Purely hypothetical. Not my Troop. I did state attendance does not equal Scout Spirit. However, it is one of the compononts of Scout Spirit. And also a componont of being loyal to the Troop. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  14. I have always felt that overnight camping trips were a waste since you need to drag all that gear for one night. We very seldom go for less than 2 nights and we never have problem getting 20 day/night in a year. We go out once a month plus summer camp. Don't forgert merit badges aren't required until a Scout has reached Star. A Scout can work on them prio to this but there is no requirement until Star. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  15. I understand the ban on paintball. Someone could get seriously hurt. As for lasar tag, the injury risk is quite less. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  16. Live your life by the Scout Oat & Law. The Scout Law includes the word Loyal. How is a Scout loyal to the Troop by being absent witout a good reason for an etended period of time? OGE, No I haven't reversed my position and yes if a Scout meets the minimum requirements he can earnd hi Eagle. mk9750, The period of time was between registration times. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  17. We had one like this last year a the summer camp I attend. I thought it was great! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  18. I don't think Wood Badge presentations should be done at a Troop COH. These are for the Scouts. And they should never be done at an Eagle COH. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  19. OGE, Sorry it took so long to get back. I'm in Rochester, NY. Unexpected trip to my son's college. The point I'm trying to make is Scout Spirit shoudn't just be "signed off". It is very important and should be not takene lightly. I know attendance isn't a requirement. But I do feel committment by the Scout to the program is. And lack of attendance CAN show lack of committment. I would never prevent a Scout who has completed the requirements from earning his Eagle unless he came right out and said "I want my Eagle because it looks good on a college application". If that was the case, I would have to take a hard look at Scout Spirit. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  20. YoungBlood, Agreed. But is a Scout passes the swimmers test, he has passed that requirement for 1st Class. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  21. OGE, I agree that if a Scout meets all the minimum requirements he is eligible to earn Eagle. The subjective part of the formula is how a Scout live the Scout Oath & Law in his everyday life. Troop meetings and Troop activities occur during everyday life and if the Scout is lacking in these areas, then there could be a question as to how well he is living his everyday life according to the Scout Oath & Law. I know attendance does not equal Scout Spirit but it is part of the equation. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  22. Bob, It is about both what he did while he was gone and the reason he was gone. And my Scoutmaster(me)has no hang-ups except the ones you seem to think I have. So since you think I have hang-ups, I must because you are always correct when it comes to Scouting! Ed Mori Scoutmaster (me) Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  23. Bob, Well maybe the reason I am able to give such vivid details is I have can imagine these things happening where you seem to be incapable of doing so. I have never said I wouldn't talk to the boy about his situation. I would. What I am saying is if he refuse to give any reason other than " I didn't want to" I would not sign off on his Scout Spirit until I was sure it was there. And by the way, I sign my posts Scoutmaster because I am the Scoutmaster. Feel free to refer to me. I'm a big boy. I can take it. Ed Mori Scoutmaster - Really! Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  24. Bob, Can't you give an answer without asking a million questions? It's obvious you feel Scouting is a cookie cutter organization. Everything works the same for every unit. Well it doesn't. If all you require in your Troop is the Scouts show up and they complete their advancement & do the minimum to earn Eagle then you are doing the program and the boy a large diservice. I would never deny a Scout the opportunity to earn his Eagle. Oh, by the way, you still haven't answered my question about why you think this hypothetical situation is real? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
