  1. Bob White & eisley, I suggest you check. Both my kids are deaf & the ADA DOES cover interpreters. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  2. I was in error. I just got off the phone with the suprevisor of interpreters in my area and was told the BSA doesn't have to meet the ADA guidelines because they are a private organization that doesn't accept government funding. I am very sorry for the incorrect information. When my son attended our council's Eagle dinner, the council paid for his interpreter. That is what I based my information on. Bob, You are incorrect. ADA does cover interpreters. If a deaf student needs an interpreter, the school district must provide one. Churchs don't have to for the same reason as the BSA. Once again, I apologize for the incorrect information. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  3. OGE, The council must supply professional interpreters unless something other is agreed to. Professional interpreters are expensive. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  4. My son is deaf. He never had an interpreter at summer camp. There is also another Scout in another Troop who is deaf & he has never had an interpreter at summer camp. These Scouts are entitled to an interpreter under the law. The only reason your council can deny this request is if they can prove it will cause financial hardship to the council by paying for the interpreter. I would push this issue all the way to the council executive. Keep us informed. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  5. Sounds like the PC police are here! Snipes are real animals, by the way. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  6. Bob White, Excellent suggestion! I love it! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  7. EagleSPL, Welcome! SPL ain't easy as I see you have found out. Have you talked to him about this? Have you talked to his PL about this? Actually, this is a common problem with siblings. I would talk to your brother & find out why he is being disruptive. I would also discuss this with his PL since he doesn't seem to have control of his Patrol (I made a rhyme!). Good luck & keep us informed! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  8. If this skit is done in a good spirit, no problem. If not, then there is a problem. Personally, I like it! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  9. DS, I see nothing to deal with other than a bigot & those fights are usually never won. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  10. Interesting. What would I do? Nothing. From what you posted, there is nothing to do. The model rocket problem was fixed & if this guy never stepped foot in the camp then it sound like he belongs to the He-Man-Women-Haters-Club. I have found that people like this will usually hang themselves given enough rope & they usually don't need much rope. If I did do anything, I would send a letter to the people who ran the camp and commend them for a job well done. In fact, I would fo this. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  11. 1st I would look into the problems. Were they actually problems? Or were they only problems to this person? Where I would go from there depends on what I find out. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  12. Bump to CubsRgr8. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  13. In one word or less - eats! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  14. Gotta add another ......... The BSA put all the literature we as volunteers need on line. Heck, even charge a subscription fee! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  15. kwc57, I thought that was agin National Policy? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  16. The 20 days & nights camping requirement is more than just pitching a tent. Here is the text from meritbadge.com for #9. 9.Show experience in camping by doing the following: a. Camp out a total of at least 20 days and 20 nights. (You may use a week of long-term camp toward this requirement.) Sleep each night under the sky or in a tent you have pitched. b. On any of these camping experiences, you must do TWO of the following, only with proper preparation and under qualified supervision: 1.Hike up a mountain, gaining at least 2,000 vertical feet. 2.Backpack for at least four miles. 3.Take a bike trip of at least 15 miles or at least four hours. 4.Plan and carry out a float trip of at least four hours. 5.Rappel down a rappel route of 30 feet or more. 6.On one of your campouts, perform a conservation project approved in advance by the private land owner or public land management agency. Can this be completed on a family camping trip? Possibly but I don't think it will happen. This is an Eagle required merit badge & should not be taken lightly. 17. KS, I agree with you on most points. I do feel this SM is a little out of line not letting this Scout start his Eagle project. I commend the boy for wanting to get started! What this SM can do is ensure this Scout understands wnat his role in his Eagle project is. He can also ensure the Scout is the one doing the project, not his parents. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  18. I would allow 2nd year Webelos to participate in Boy Scout camporees. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  19. ProudParent, Simple answer - no. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  20. Gotta agree with all the other posts. If this Scout has completed all the requirements, the SM can't hold him back from starting his Eagle project. Usually, the project is the last thing a Life Scout does on his trail to Eagle. It sounds like this Scout is going to do it 1st & then complete the rest of his requirements for Eagle. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  21. Folks, Got some more news at roundtable last night. A local restraurant held a fundraiser for Mike & raised around $1,700. Mike is now a little mobile. He has a chair fixed with a tube he operates with his mouth to move the chair. He has the same set-up to change the channels on the TV. He is still in rehab & has a long way to go. For those of you in the Pittsburgh, PA area, there will be a charity basketball game on Tuesday March 11th. The Medical Rescue Team South will be playing the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers will be signing autographs at half time. Tickets are $5 and available at the door. The gate proceeds will go to benefit Mike. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  22. From my understanding, it is up to the District Advancement Chair to get the letters of recommendation, not the Scout. As long as the Scout completed the application properly and listed 5 correct people who would be willing to give him a reference he has completed his part. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  23. Bob, I guess you didn't understand. Since the application only asks for people that would be willing to give a reference if asked, where does it say letters from these people are required? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  24. Bob, Thanks for hte info. Can you tell me where I can find that the letters of recommendation are required since it isn't on the application? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
