Bob, All I was doing was refering to what you had posted previously. I didn't pay attention to the dates & that really has no bearing on this discussion. No malice intended. I was only wondering where you were coming from. I quoted no BSA policy. I only was stating what I understand from your posts. If I was in error, I apologize. A new low? What was my previous low? It seems to me that if anyone disagrees with you or your interpretation of BSA policy, that person is wrong. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and there are BSA policies that are open to interpertation. Since I can't quote BSA policy chapter & verse like you I can't give you specific examples. Yes I know the bible fairly well. I see nowhere where I beared false witness toward you. As far as my morals, if you would like to debate morals with me, pick the time & place & I'll be there. You also seem to have an issue with my credibility. Interesting! Is that because you & I have different opinions or is it that I don't agree with you? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

mermaid, Welcome to the forum. From your post, it sounds like the "old guard" is gone. If this is the case, I would start over. Close the old checking account & open a new one. Have at least 3 people on teh account (not related to each other). Get something in writing regarding expenses. Maybe something like "all expenses must be approved by the CC prior to payment". Take an inventory of all your gear & equipment & put someone in charge of it. You might have lost some funds & gear but sometimes it's better to just start fresh and look on it as a learning experience. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

There is no insurance requirement that requires Scouts or adults to be in uniform while traveling. There is no BSA policy that states such, either. Actually, uniforms aren't required bya the BSA! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

My district held it's annual District Dinner last night and Mike Lahoff was present. He is in great spirits & I had a great time talking wiht him. I told hima of all your posts & he was very happy & told me to tell all of you thanks. He is doing well. He is still in rehab but can get around ou his own with special assistive devices. Also, Mike was the recipient of our District Award of Merit. Quite an honor. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

This stellar Boy Scout has legions of merits

Bob, And I quote "Actually it would seem your concern and your contempt is not with the boy, but with the Scoutmaster who signed his scout spirit requirements as he advanced." I have no issue with the Scoutmaster that's where you assumption is wrong. Remember, he only need a fraction of the total badges he earned to earn Eagle. It is after that where I have the issue & the SM might not have been involved in signing any of these merit badge cards! Eagle Scout ScoutMaster Conf - "Face The Nation"
evmori replied to jyoklavich's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Welcome to the discussion! I don't think there are any hard and fast rules regarding SM conferences. I handle mine as more of a discussion with the Scout about his likes & dislikes in the Troop, how he's doing in school, his strengths & weaknessses, etc. It is never hot lights & bamboo shoots under the nails. Bob, Once again you assumed wrong! 1st of all, I have no contempt with or for anyone. 2nd of all, Scout Spirit was never a concern! My concern was that some of the merit badges he earned might have been rubber stamped and therefore this Scout learned nothing about those badges. I will state once again, if he can't remember what he learned, what was the point! I realize memorization is not part of earning merit badges but is a Scout doesn't retain what he was taught or studied then all he did was "collect" not earn the badges. You seem to forget the obstacles he had to overcome. The number of badges, the amount of time he had available to complete them, finding a counselor for all them and his medical conditions! If in fact he did earn & not "collect" all the badges, I applaud him. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -

Bob, I agree with your post. However, there could be a flip-side. What if all a Scout learned was to whine & complain till he got what he wanted without learning a thing? I'm not saying this happened in this case. Wouldn't that be a disservice to the youth as well as the program? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -

In my district, Wood Badge is talked about at almost every roundtable. There have been many Scouters in my district that have staffed Wood Badge courses. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 I use to be an Eagle ...........

Twocubdad, Consider what this Scout had to do to accomplish earning all 119 merit badges (see mk9750's post). Consider his medical condition. Take into account his time in school and sleeping. Were corners cut? I can't say for sure but given the above I would say yes. mk9750, Excellent post! Thanks for doing the math! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -

"I have read from posters of their disappointment that an Eagle candidate could not tie a simple knot. Having checked the requirements for Eagle as well as the aims and mission of scouting I am unable to uncover any such requirement for the rank or goal of the program." Maybe not required for the Eagle rank but knowing specific knots for lower ransk is required. One can't be an Eagle until they earn the lower ranks. And an Eagle candidate should be setting the example by knowing those lower rank requirements. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
First, I think you need to have a sit down with the Scout who was hit with the cane & get some more details. Depending on what comes of that should dictate your next move. I'm not sure I would remove the PL. From what you posted, this Scout is just learning. He might not have known what else to do or was provoked. You need more details. If the PL did lie when you asked him if he hit the Scout, then it is time to have a sit down with him and his parents to explain what Scouting is about. This would also be a good time to go into detail about the Scout Oath & Law & what it means to live by them. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Twocubdad, I think you are missing the point. If all a Scout remembers about a badge is one thing he did, then what did he learn? I don't think anyone doubts this Scout overcame a lot to accomplish what he did. The question is what did he learn? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
Questions for Scout Leader Trainers.
evmori replied to Bob White's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
"Do you think any Council/District ever varies the syllabus to mess up/degrade/lessen or otherwise make the learning experience less than it should be?" Yes I do. "How do you measure how much your alterations "enhance" the learning experience?" We don't alter. Just embelish. "Have you ever had adults attend both your training and training done "by the book" and asked them to compare the differnt experiences?" This has never come up. Why the question? "What qualifications does your training staff have that allows it to "know" how to improve a training program put together by professionals in training and years in development?" We follow the syllabus. Hope this helps. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
DS, Congrats! What an honor! This sounds like a tough decision. I will keep you and your family in my prayers. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Twocubdad, I wouldn't get overly upset over that answer if it was the only one like that. If he was asked the same question about Envi Sci and answered "how to make an ecosystem" then I would be concerned. The other thing that concerns me is he "collected" merit badges.
