Does a 12 year old have the leadership skills to be an Eagle? Good question. I suppose it is possible but not the norm. Most 12 year olds are still playing kid games & losing their cups. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Ditto to eisley. The electric map is the best way to start at Gettysburg. Also, the tour of Eisenhower's hose is worthwhile. And, in my opinion, the walk accross Picket's Charge is great! Enjoy your trip! I've been there twice with my Troop & we are planning to go back next summer. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

In about an hour I am leaving to help my Troop place flags on vets graves at a local cemetery. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Bob, If you don't need to defend you posts then neither does anyone else on this board. Levels the playing field. But it seems you are the judge & jury & if the posters don't agree with you they are wrong. Well guess what, we aren't! We are discussing the Boy Scouts of America not the Bob White Scouts of America. And while you are probably the most knowledgable one on this board, your opinions & certain interpretations are out of line. If you think I am "baiting" you like you did me, I'm not. I am just expressing my opinion. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Eamonn, What camp was the camporee held? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
-
Bob, Cheap shot even for you. Yes, Bob it is my Troop but the SPL is in charge. You are really good at seeing stuff that isn't there. Eamonn, I do serve my Troop. We follow the rules of Scouting. The PLC in my Troop also developed rules that are not defined in the rules of Scouting. Actually, these are more like guidelines. The summer camp we attend has a rule that all Scouts who use the pay phone must have an adult from their Troop present. Good rule. Made by adults. Who or what tells me I don't have the right to make such rules? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
-
Bob, You might not like my scenarios but they can happen. Adult leaders need to know the medical condition of the Scout in their care. Whether it is in the G2SS or YPT makes no difference. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

My Troop uses the ones in the link glenn posted. We did make a few minor adjustments. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Bob, OK your son loses his inhaler & can't breath nor talk! I as his unit leader am asked if he has any medical problems & I answer "I am aware of none". Another scenario: Your son is on medication. He is walking along & all of a sudden he falls over. He is breathing but his pulse rate is low. No one in the camp knows he is on medication & the reason he is now in peril is because he forgot to take his medication. If I as a leader had known this, I would have been able to ensure the medication was taken & prevented the problem. Common sense must prevail or we put the Scouts in our care at risk! And HIPPA doesn't apply to the BSA. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

A)Give them what they need to make this happen. B)Excellent! Make sure they have the proper tools need to teach. C)Suggest attending 2 summer camps - 1 regular & 1 high adventure. After the regular camp maybe all the Scouts will be able to attend the high adventure camp. D)Make it happen E)No problem F)No problem G)If the funds are available & the arrangements can be made, go for it. H)NO NO NO I)Ask how they can find a way to make him fit. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Bob, Yes I do need to know! If I have a Scout who has sever asthema & he can't do extended physical stuff then I need to know. What if this Scout is tapped out for the OA & dies while completint his Ordeal? I don't want that on my conscience. We are responsible for the Scouts while they are in our care. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Bob, Get you head out of the book for a minute! If a Scout tells you something that is not illegal, harmful, dangerous, detrimental to his education THEN asks you to not tell his parents you need to assess what it is & make that determination. If you flatly refuse to uphold his request regardless of what it is do you really think he or any other Scouts will come to you for advise? This isn't in the books & it isn't black & white. Maybe that's why you don't understand it. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Let's look at this from the tryanical rule perspective. In my council, there is a rule of no liquid fuel stoves or lanterns at council camps. At the summer camp I attend there is a rule that states no personal firearms or bows allowed in camp. In my office there is a no smoking rule. The street I live on has a speed limit of 25 MPH. Are these tyranical? Could be considered so. Do these rules help us make ethical decisions? Not really. If a Troop has no rules in place how is a Scout to learn where the boundries are? That's what rules do. Set boundries. They tell us what we can & can't do. There are rules we don't like but we still must follow them regardless of who made them. So when someone suggests we as leaders out out of line when we have rules like no phone cards or you can't call home unless there is an emergency that really chaps my shorts. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Bob, The point I am trying to make is if we as leaders are not aware that our Scouts are on medication then there is a chance they are at risk. We as leaders MUST know what medications our Scouts are on. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

When a Scout is with us we are responsible for him. If a Scout reveals something to me that is illegal or harmful to others then asks me not to tell his parents I would have to tell that Scout I'm sorry but I have to. Same thing if a Scout tells me he has a D in Biology. Now if a Scout tells me he is exploring other faiths & doesn't want his parents to find out because they might stop him, I would keep that confidence. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Bob, Read what I posted. I said given. I meant by the medical staff at camp. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

If a Scout is on meds of any kind, we as leaders need to know. We are responsible for them while they are with us. There could be issues if a Scout get sick at camp & he is given medication (cough medicine, aspirin) that doesn't mix with the medication he is on. This could be life threatening! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

As a leader, I am responsible for the Scouts I take to summer camp. Therefore, to keep order, rules need to be in place. A rule in my Troop is calls home must be for an emergency not just to talk to mom/dad/sister/girlfriend. In 15+ years at summer camp, my Troop has never let a Scout go home because he is homesick and never let a Scout call home other than in an emergency. What if the camp had a rule no cell phone other than leaders? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Bob, What does he call this higher being? Don't know that I care. He shows his reverence by attending church every Sunday. The reason he didn't want his parents to know is he didn't want to them to beat his ear. If his 1st two answers put him in conflict with Scouting principals, then I would have told the parents he participated in a SM conference but I couldn't recommend him for a BOR due to something he revealed during the SM conference. I would not say what. I feel if a Scout or anyone for that fact tells me something in confidence that isn't illegal or must be reported (like child abuse) then if I tell the person(s) I was not to tell I would violate that confidence therefore not being trustworthy. And to me, my word is far more important that a rule. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
-
Bob, OK advocate time. You just had a SM conference with a Scout & he told you during the conference he knew there was a higher being but was unsure of his belief in God. You talked about it and after the conference was finished, this Scout requested you not tell his parents about the God thing. What would you do? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
-
Bob, No advocate this time. I had a Scout tell me something during a SM conference and after we were finished, he asked I not tell his dad (single parent). I didn't. When his dad asked how it went (he is an ASM in my Troop) I told him it went well. I never revealed what his son didn't want me to reveal. It was nothing illegal or morally wrong. I feel I was living up to the Trustworthy point of the Scout law. Setting the example so to speak. Also, Bob, do assume everything I post as playing devil's advocate just because you don't agree. It is getting a little annoying. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Measuring "active in your troop or patrol" requirement
evmori replied to Bob White's topic in Working with Kids
Mark, No I don't let the Scouts sign off on rank requirements. They can complete them with the Scout but the actual signing off is done by myself or one of my ASM's. This helps eliminate a friend signing off a requirement without it actually being completed. And the adults in my Troop know what a stickler I am for the Scouts knowing the requirements before they are signed off. No you didn't mix things up. What I posted was what I meant. Bob, No leadership skill required for Eagle? Isn't that what it is all about? Doesn't the Eagle service project require leadership? And doesn't the Life Scout have to serve as a leader in the Troop as a rank requirement? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -

Mark, If a Scout lied & was signed off for Scout Spirit, he was signed off fraudlently. Therefore I would physically erase the initials AFTER I had a talk with the initialer to determine if he/she knew the Scout had in fact lied. And if they initialer knew, that is a whole different discussion. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
