  1. Not pretty! This is down right duck ugly no t matter if it's true or not! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  2. I feel sorry for the Scout! He is the one who suffered in this case. I can't imagine how he felt being left out like he was. Like btps said, the unit leader is the one who needs YPT. Wet gear or not, all the Scouts need to go home. And if wet gear was the issue, this leader needs to worry more about his Scouts & less about his car or truck. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  3. jaeeyz, Once again, I think you did the right thing. I also gotta agree with Fat Old Guy about wingnut's unit. Keep up the good work, jerryz. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  4. Fat Old Guy, The homes at Heritage Reservation that are used by the staff & rangers were built by Ryan Homes. I think that's what eamonn was refering to. The OA also uses them at times. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  5. I gotta agree with Fat Old Guy. Something is amiss. And dsteele is also correct! A little while ago the previous pastor of our CO told us there was a fund set up by a member of the congregation who died for Scouts to use for camp. Some of our Scouts took advantage of this. After this pastor left, I contacted the business manager of the church to see if the fund was still active since we had another Scout who wanted to use it. The business manager told me the fund balance was zero. I didn't think much of it until about a year later the business manager was indited for misappropriating funds from the church. He was a very likable guy & no one saw this coming. The resaon I tell this - to support my stance. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  6. eamonn, I agree with how you handled the situation even though it violated BSA policy. You used common sense and sometimes common sense must prevail over policy. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  7. OGE, No. The patrol method was used. The PL was elected by 4 of the 6 Scouts at summer camp. The other 2 are new Scouts & don't really know him that well. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  8. Guess I owe an apology. Sorry Bob. That was wrong of me. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  9. gtwnmassage, Welcome to the campfire! Pull up a log and join in! I have been going to summer camp as a leader for over 15 years & the down time for some Scouts can be tough. These are usually the 1st year Scouts and this is usually the 1st time they have been away from home for a long period of time. What to do with them during the down time may depend on the camp you attend. Some have program available all the time. Others don't. If your doesn't I would suggest having their PL or Troop Guide work with them on their rank requirements during the down time. Also, have some of the more summer camp seasoned Scout take them for a walk around camp. They could show them some of the "cool" areas of camp. Hope this helps. Enjoy camp. It's a great time. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  10. Laura, Wow! What a week. Sorry to hear about it. I think the problem might have been stopped before it happened. In my Troop, if a Scout lies while we are on a camping trip, he goes home. No questions. Also, we have what we call a "Cus Cup" we use at summer camp. Everytime anyone in the site uses a swear word they must pay a quarter. There are two words that will get them sent home. Also, if anyone insults anyone else while in the site, they pay a quarter. And this year, if you asked someone one for something or to do something & didn't say please or thank you it cost you a quarter. Since we instituted the "Cus Cup", all the above behavior has diminished. I hope you and your Troop will get back to normal soon. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  11. Do the parents know National exists? I think a better question is do they know the orginizational structure of the BSA? If they did, it might help them. Individual units are the lowest level of the organization & this is where most parents are familiar with. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  12. Sleeping bag. We don't let our Scouts bring a "personal stash". Mom & dad & Scout pay a lot for a week at camp & if the Scout has a "personal stash" they probably won't eat the food that was paid for. Also, a "personal stash" invites animals! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  13. Fat Old Guy, I would have to say no. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  14. eaglefoot, Sorry to hear you stepped down. Sounds like this group needs som serious help and maybe anger management! Good luck in your endevors. You should look for a new Troop. I'm sure another unit would welcome you with open arms. How about cow tipping!!!!!!!!!! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  15. This is a tough one. Some kids (and adults) can take kidding better than others. I think you need to deal with this on an individual basis. It's also interesting what you find out when you start asking questions & not shooting from the hip 1st. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  16. HA HA HO HO it is to laugh! I' a little guy! Ed
  17. If the counselor in fact didn't require the Scouts not to bring up an object from the bottem then the counselor didn't fulfill the requirement. Remember, requirements can't be added to or taken away from. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  18. Hunt, Being a swimming merit badge counselor, I understand your concern. This is sort of like giving someone a task to complete & having an idea how YOU want it completed. The person you gave the task to completed it the way THEY wanted to. The merit badge counselor (in the case of the summer camp I attend the area director) felt you son demonstrated his swimming abilities well enough and knew th other requirement well enough to pass him. This might not have been good enough for you but you weren't the counselor. I know this is tough, but something we need to accept. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  19. Kinda think eamonn is correct. And it only makes sense. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  20. My Troop built a toilet paper holder in the latrine last year and this year built a magazine rack in the latrine. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  21. Fat Old Guy, You would be endangering the fish! Ed
  22. Silver Shark, This kid made a mistake and I feel the way jerryz handled it was perfect. Why do we need to get the authorities involved? Sure what he did was wrong. Just because he is ADHD makes no difference. He is still expected to follow the rules. The Scout just earned his Totin Chit & he was probably pretty full of himself & made a mistake. We all do. But I don't see the need to throw the book at him. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  23. Dan, So you are saying I am a liar? That's nice. How Scout-like of you. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  24. dan, Yes it is my opinion and whether it means anything to you I can't say. But it does mean something to me or I wouldn't have stated it. Bob, You seemed to have forgotten the one golden rule - no mothers. If I were you, I would apologize for bringing Fat Old Guy's family into this. It's the right thing to do. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
