  1. "Milk for a broken leg? Where in creation did you get your first aid training. And you mean to tell us that a boy scout doesn't know if he is lactose intolerant? Do you really expect him to request milk? Really Ed!" Read the post, Bob! What I posted was the Scout asks for something to drink & you give him milk & he has an allergic reaction because he is lactose intolerant! And why did you give him milk? Because you didn't read the medical form that states he IS lactose intolerant. "Camps keep those forms in secured areas with restricted access, not just lying around in a three ring notebook." My Troop also keeps a copy with us at all times in case we need them. I think most Troops do. And as for my Troop & probably the vast majority of Troops, these forms are kept in a safe & secure place on camping trips. And as someone else has posted, these medical forms were given to the Troop by the parents. I don't think those parents want us to just file them away without looking them over to ensure they are complete & to make sure we are aware of any special conditions their son has. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  2. "Many leaders still hold and distribute meds, A horrible idea." Why? I've been going to summer camp for over 15 years and one of the registered adult leaders ALWAYS holds & distributes meds. Why? To make sure the Scouts take them! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  3. Medical History: Den leaders, Scoutmasters, team coaches, and crew Advisors should review these and become knowledgeable about the medical needs of the youth members in their unit. What is unclear here? If we need to be knowledgable of the medical needs of the Scouts in our unit, then knowing what is on their medical form is part of being knowledgable! Asking the parents is being knowledgable! Asking the Scout is being knowledgable! All are necessary! And I don't feel this way, Bob, because I feel I need to be in control. The safety of the scouts in my unit is very important to me. Knowing if they require medication or anything else is part of their safety. In Fat Old Guys example you missed one thing. What if the Scout with a broken leg is allergic to milk products & you decide to give him a glass of milk when he asks for a drink? Think their might be a problem? It's not about being controlling or needing to know everything. It's about the Scout's safety. Not knowing could put that in peril. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  4. Thanks Bob. But there is nothing about the Scout not being capable. It also states a Scout leader can take on this responsibility. It also states the BSA doesn't require this nor do they necessarily encourage this. Plus, if local law requires it, it must happen. But nothing about the Scout's ability to take his own medication. Nor does it state the adult leadership should NOT be aware of this. And it states after obtaining all the necessary information, a Scout leader can take on this responsibility. But, what necessary information is isn't defined. So, if I as a leader don't know Tommy Tenderfoot is on medicinication & Tommy Tenderfoot doesn't take his medication & Tommy Tenderfoot keels over because he didn't take his medication we as leaders aren't responsible? In a court of law, that wouldn't hold water. Especially if it is on the medical form I as a leader have in my possession. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  5. "Good for you. You shouldn't be and in fact the BSA agrees and says the same thing, that the responsibility for medications is the responsibility of the scout, and if the scout is not capable then it is the parent/guardian responsibility. The BSA is very specific in the G2ss taht it neither requires or recommends the leader to take this responsibility. In addition, no law requires you or holds you responsible for such responsibility." I can't seem to find the pages in the G2SS where it states the BSA is specific on the adult leaders taking responsibility for this. Bob, Please help me out here. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  6. And in a perfect world we would all get along. I don't want to take the chance of a Scout being in danger because I didn't know he needed some special medication ,food, etc.. I'm not interested in "knowing" what's wrong with the kid only that he has what he needs to be safe. Remember, we are dealing with kids & kids forget. I don't want to be responsible if Tommy Tenderfoot didn't take his meds & ends up in a coma. That would look real good in court! "Mr. Mori, didn't you know Tommy Tenderfoot was on special medication?" "No I didn't." "Wasn't this written on his medical form?" "I don't know." "What do you mean you don't know." "I never read it. I only looked it over to ensure it looked complete." Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1Peter 4:10
  7. MarkNoel, Where in my previous post did I mention religion. I refered to race. Once again twist till it fits! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  8. If we as adult leaders don't know if the Scouts in our care have medical problems which require special medication or special food or anything out of the ordinary we are doing those Scouts a great disservice and possibly putting them in grave danger. It is part of our job to know these things. Read the G2SS. It is not our job to tell everyone in the world that Tommy Tenderfoot is ADHD. That's where th privacy comes in. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  9. My Buck knife I've had for over 15 years.
  10. You can't compare race discrimination with gay discrimination. People of different races have no choice what race they are born to. Gay people do have a choice. It fits about as well as a glove fits on a foot! Rooster7, Excellent points! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  11. My White Westinghouse electric range. Double oven & works like a charm!
  12. Bob White another wise bird. Speaks truth. It seems from all the posts that no adult in this Troop has the stones to stand up to this lady. That's why I made my suggestion that the PLC draft a rule dealing with this & get the committee to approve it. Once this is done it is the job of the SM to deal with this lady. SPL T15 stated that if his Troop kicked her out it would be all over the papers since she is the mayors wife. Don't kick her out! Force her to leave! Creating a rule in the Troop about this is one way to start. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  13. OGE is a wise bird! But is sounds like the resident adults won't stand up to this lady so the Scouts have to. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  14. Fubdraising is one of the ways a Scout can learn about being thrifty & the value of money. It also provides a method for the Troop to raise funds without asking the parents to dig into their pockets all the time. Depending on what your unit does, Scouting can be expensive. The uniform itself can be expensive as well as some of the gear. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  15. There is really nothing in the BSA rules & regs to stop her from going. My only suggestion would be to get the PLC together & try to get a Troop rule passed that all adults on the trip must be trained & registered with the BSA. All other adults are allowed to visit outings & trips but not allowed to participate as leaders. They can only be observers. If I was your SM, based on what you have posted, I would back this decision by the PLC 100%. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  16. Pray for resolution. Pray to keep your cool. Pray for God's wisdom. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  17. Fat Old Guy has a point. And we can't add or take away from the requirements.
  18. "Do you think there are other prohibited marbles still in the container?" Yes there are and if left in the container long enough they will contaminate the entire container.
  19. What a mess! I think you handled things well. It seems the other adult leaders didn't od such a good job. This should have never gotten this far. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  20. Give what a rest, Bob? No where in the original post did Trail Pounder blame anyone for not earning Eagle. That's what you got from the post, and frankly, I went back & re-read it & have no clue where you got your interpretation from. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  21. "In all due respect Trail Pounder you cannot blame your lack of achieving Eagle on any church you did not attend. You did not complete the Eagle rank because you did not complete the Eagle rank requirements, isn't that correct?" Reading between the lines again, I see!! The way I read it was because he didn't go to church he coulsn't finish. Nowhere in his post did he blame the church. That's where the reading between the lines came in. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  22. WOW! Make sure she never signs up as a leader! And Fat Old Guy is correct! Shooting her is not painful enough! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  23. My son did the same thing! He had all the merit badges complete & even finished his Eagle porject. All he had to do was write it up! He did nothing! I finaly asked him if he wanted to be an Eagle. He said yes. I said the you need to finish what you started. I will help if you ask, but you need to do the work. He finished (without any help from me except proofreading) and earned his Eagle! I agree it is his Eagle, not yours. It's up to him to complete what he needs to complete. Is it possible he doesn't realize how close he is? Or maybe he figures he has time. I would also show him yourpost. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  24. littlebillie, Good point. We don't know for certain if someone is NOT born gay. My belief is they aren't. That said, I will still stick to my earlier post. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  25. mark, I think I will stick to my guns on this. There is no proof that one is born gay. Therefore it is a learned behavior. Therefore it is a lifestyle. Until there is absolute proof that one is born gay, I will not change my opinion. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
