11 year olds leading 11 year olds, what's your experience?
evmori replied to Fat Old Guy's topic in The Patrol Method
"I used the word "hope" more like "wish' than "expect". I might read you wrong, but I think that if you had an 11 year old Patrol Leader, you would "hope" that he got his feet quickly..." I concur. Hope you made it in time Ed Mori -

Mark, Those are not the expectations I have of 11 yr old PL's. Those would be the expectations I would have of a 14 yr old & up PL. 11 yr olds are still just kids. For many of them, this is the 1st time they have ever done anything without dad and/or mom around. They have enough trouble finding their socks with a flashlight & a map! Like I posted once before, there are 11 yr olds who be good PL's but this is the exeption not the norm. Ed Mori -
Taht's even sadder

1st - Welcome KirkF! Pull up a hunk o timber, grab a cup of the dark hot liquid & join in the banter! OK - yes the 1st Aid Merit badge must be earned 1st. AKA - prerequisite. The actual badge name is Emergency Preparedness. Ed Mori

CharityAK, That's sad! Ed

Fat Old Guys knows of what he speaks. I have commented to my wife many times how kids today don't just "do" stuff. When I was younger, we were always at the ball field or the playground or the pool doing something. We played pick-up games of baseball (pitchers hand since we only had 5 on a team), basketball, four square, tennis, horseshoes, football, hockey! We would call each other to get a group to go to the pool in the summer. How did we get there? We walked or rode our bikes! Mom was home but didn't drive us. We would play bike tag in the neighborhood! We were never home during the summer except to eat & sleep! Today's kids are never out unless there is an organized activity organized by adults! Ed Mori

"If you do not use the NSP, how do you handle new member orientation and what not?" We integrate new members into existing Patrols. Ed Mori -
WHO can test for BSA swimmer's test for First Class Advancement?
evmori replied to LauraT7's topic in Advancement Resources
Bob is correct as far as who can signoff on the requirement. The test part is the same test my council summer camp uses for their swimmers test. I don't think there is any restrictions on who can administer the test. It's pretty straight forward & the requirements are easy to follow. Naturally, the G2SS should be followed. Ed Mori -
Pls translate ´cracker barrel´ for me.

Good noshing! -
OGE, I have never been in a prison for any reason, but thanks for the info. "may not allow" leaves the door open for "may allow". I know it doesn't say that in the G2SS but that's my interpretation. I know, Bob, my interpretation is wrong by your standard. Ed Mori
-
While that is all well and good, Bob, it sounds like the problem needs to be dealt with on the spot. A Scout of any age weilding a firestick is unsafe & a mother or any other adult who let's a Scout do it needs to be dealt with on the spot. Hopefully a simple explanation of the danger of his actions would suffice. Ed Mori(This message has been edited by evmori)

Fat Old Guy, "may not allow" not just "may not" . Difference! Ed Mori
-
Bob, It seems the BSA doesn't really care what the masses want regarding uniforms. Let's take a quick poll. How many like the old cargo pocket uniform pants? Not the new ones the old ones? Ed Mori
-
I know I'm being picky but the way the reg is worded leaves it open for interpretation. If the BSA wanted to ban smoking all they had to do was state smoking is prohibited. They have done that for other things! Why not this? Ed Mori
-
Fat Old Guy, "may not allow" and "prohibited" have two entirely different meanings. "Prohibited" means no. "May not allow" means you might not be allowed or you might be allowed. Ed Mori
-
OGE, Excellent suggestion. And maybe one other alternative - complete the BOR with the understanding it will reconvene when the Scout has completed what you posted. Ed Mori
-
Bob, No it doesn't. May not doesn't mean the same thing as prohibited. packsaddle, I think the wording in the G2SS leaves it up to each individual unit on how to handle this situation. SR540Beaver, Exactly! Ed Mori
-
Back to my question - And since the requirement was already signed off do we have to accept it was signed off when we know it wasn't completed? Ed Mori (This message has been edited by evmori)

I misuse the program? Examples please examples! I am not professing that I follow the program to the letter. I don't think anyone does. But I have never misused the program. Ed Mori

evmori replied to Fat Old Guy's topic in The Patrol Method
Yes I did, Bob. But I never said I support using teh New Scout Patrol. That is your interpretation of my post. Plus, if you read on in other posts, I recanted that statement. Who's Pete? Ed Mori(This message has been edited by evmori) -
So the YP video isn't new! I didn't think so. So the question still is the contradiction & which one we follow. The G2SS or the video? They don't say the same thing. Ed Mori

Bob, I never said this situation happend in a New Scout Patrol. You assumed that. And since you assumed this happened in a New Scout Patrol you assumed since I didn't mention it there was no Troop Guide. If there was a new Scout Patrol there would be a Troop Guide. Sorry for my omission. The Scouts always elect their PL. Don't support what? Ed Mori -
Bob, Then there is a contradiction in the video & the G2SS. If the video states smoking is prohibited & the G2SS doesn't which is correct? And please, not your interpretation. When did this new Youth Protection Video come out? Ed Mori

And after that the board asks Sammy "How did you learn your knots?" and Sammy answers "I never did." Since the board may not retest does this give them the option to have Sammy show them he can tie his required knots for rank? And since the requirement was already signed off do we have to accept it was signed off when we know it wasn't completed? I know the problem stems from the person who signed off on the requirement.
