Philly council looking at revised anti-bias policy
evmori replied to MarkNoel's topic in Issues & Politics
Laurie, What I meant was with the COL stating "that's the model" was that they agreed that the BSA was practicing unlawful discrimination. Sorry if I didn't explain that well. A blessed Christmas to all! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10 -

Able to attend my council's Eagle Dinner and be a sponsor. Personal thorns My mom's eyesight continues to deteriate. Personal Roses Being the girls basketball booster president. My son's grades in college. He has been on the dean's list every quarter and he is a junior. My daughter's grades in high school. She has been on the high honor roles her junior & senior years. Philly council looking at revised anti-bias policy
evmori replied to MarkNoel's topic in Issues & Politics
The way the COL council worded their statement was terrible! They are not practicing unlawful discrimination! The Supreme Court said the BSA was well within the law to not allow gays to be leaders. The "unlawful discrimination" phrase is nothing more than a buzz phrase used to appease. A blessed Christmas to all! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10 -

Adrianvs, Thanks for clearing that up. I would agree. Ed Mori A blessed Christmas to all! 1 Peter 4:10 -
So if your council summer camp is terrible or the Scouts in your unit like another summer camp instead of you council summer camp you should attend your council summer camp so your unit won't be part of the problem? Ed Mori A blessed Christmas to all! 1 Peter 4:10

Good point acco! If the council agrees to follow the Scout law, that should be good enough! And since the Supreme Court ruled the BSA was not violating any laws by not allowing gays membership the unlawful discrimination line no longer applies! Excellent! The language the NY council used is about as PC as it gets. Let's not hurt anyone's feelings! Bull! -

Oh goody! Just what we need. Another PC council. -
I'm not speaking for Fat Old Guy but I don't recall anyone saying it is complicted. My point is if mom always packs for the Scout, he probably doesn't know what is in his bag let alone how to pack it! The requirement says show the correct way to pack you bag. It's probably the simplest requirement! And easily taught. The hard part is getting mom to let teh Scout do it himself. Ed Mori A blessed Christmas to all! 1 Peter 4:10

Fat Old Guy, My bad! Ed Mori

How do you show something like the right way to pack without actually doing it? It isn't like show & tell where you pull out a picture and explain it! And if mom does it all the time, this Scout woun't be able to do it! It sound like it might be a good time to have a class in packing for the entire Troop! "All ethics are situational." Sounds like the PC version. There is a difference between right and wrong in every situation. The ethics don't change. Only the person's interpretation of right and wrong. Ed Mori A blessed Christmas to all! 1 Peter 4:10 -
When I was growing up in the 60's sports has seasons. And they were less organized at the youth level. I spent many a day and night at the ball field playing pick-up games of baseball, basketball, football, etc. There was more time for youth to be active in other things. Today, the seasonality of sports has started to slip. My daughter play HS basketball & she plays all year. The same goes for soccer & other sports. And the organized sports now start at 3rd grade! So there is less time for kids to be involved in other activities. Whether you think it is a cop-out or not Bob, it is reality. Open your eye, man! Ed Mori A blessed Christmas to all! 1 Peter 4:10

"Present yourself to your leader, properly dressed, before going on an overnight camping trip. Show the camping gear you will use. Show the right way to pack and carry it." No doubt the Scout would be able to do everything but the correct way to carry it & pack it! He has never done it! I would bet he doesn't even know what was packed let alone how to do it. Show in this case means do. Ed Mori A blessed Christmas to all! 1 Peter 4:10

Gotta agree about the sports thing. My daughter plays high school basketball & it is year round. More & more sports are getting like this. The "season" is when the games count in the statistics. Practice is all the time. Ed Mori A blessed Christmas to all! 1 Peter 4:10

"I am not responsible for the quality of scouting in any unit I have been in, the scouting program is." Interesting statement. How the program is delivered is the quality. If it is delivered poorly the quality is poor & visa versa. Ed Mori A blessed Christmas to all! 1 Peter 4:10

Fat Old Guy, Bob is just up to his old tricks! Hey maybe you & I are twin sons of different mothers! TFB could mean The Fat Boy or Tofu Feels Bad or That Funny Boy! Ed Mori A blessed Christmas to all! 1 Peter 4:10

Bob already bared my soul for me. I will at least answer truthfully even if he didn't. How many boys registered? 7 How many boys active? 7 How many Patrols? 1 Does your troop go to summer camp in or out of Council? In Council Does your troop go to Dist/Council Camporees? Yes Does your troop support FOS? Yes Does your troop sell Popcorn? If not, what are your fundraisers? Yes Does your troop use NSP, FCFY method? No Does your troop have a Venture Patrol? No Does your troop have a feeder pack? Yes How does your troop recruit non-Cub Scouts? Not currently Has your troop seen your Unit Commissioner in the past 6 months? Yes Is your Unit Commissioner helpful or a pain? Helpful Does your troop leaders attend Roundtable? Yes How many members are on your troop committee? 3 Is your troop boy led? Yes Ed Mori A blessed Christmas to all! 1 Peter 4:10

If I ever posted that only the SPL was elected, I was wrong. The Scouts in my Troop have always elected the SPL, ASPL & PL's. All other positions were appointed by the SPL. Start digging, Bob. I don't remember ever remember posting "my Troop is great because I don't use the NSP or FCFY". Me thinks you did your assuming thing again. The only merit badges we direct Scouts to are four for their 1st year at summer camp. The Trail to 1st Class program at our camp isn't real great so we figure the Scouts will learn something & have fun earning some "easier" merit badges.
-
So if a Troop only has one patrol the patrol method can't be used? And in what BSA manual is that written? Let's see - the SPL was elected, the ASPL was elected & the PL was elected. I count three. But you wouldn't know that because you assumed again! Ed Mori A blessed Christmas to all! 1 Peter 4:10

Fat Old Guy, Yeah I did but I still encourage the Patrol Method. I feel there is an inherent risk with unsupervised Patrol outings. Ed Mori A blessed Christmas to all! 1 Peter 4:10
