  1. dan, We have the Scouts that are taking the camping merit badge take their tent down & re-pitch it. Covers the requirement. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  2. pack, While I don't agree with the revocation of the tax exempt status for churches, you are correct! If it's wrong for one it's wrong for all! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  3. pack, I think you are correct. Even if the BSA clears the potential leader, if the CO doesn't want him/her, then that's their choice. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  4. While the requirement doesn't state the camping & other requirements need to be done with the Troop, I feel it is up to the counselor to determine what he/she will accept. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  5. Our Troop has been chartered at the same church since it's inception in 1912. Sounds great, huh! Well, all we get is a place to meet and a room to store our gear. And they are now trying to take away our room to store our gear! So as far as support goes we get minimal! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  6. "The choir belongs to the church, the scout unit belongs to the CO. It really is that simple." Not a good example since the choir members are almost always church members. Most CO's don't require church membership. Blaze, When I was a Cubmaster, we had very little support from our CO. The only thing they did was supply us a place to meet. They started charging us for the use of a room to hold our Blue & Gold then were ticked off because we didn't sweep the floors! And that was what part of the fee was for! We had 50 kids at the time which was a +15 increase over when I started. They are still going strong! Real world. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  7. acco, If they don't want leadership positions it's really up to them, not you. You provide the opportunity but they must take advantage of it. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  8. Blaze, Tough situation! I'd do what EagleInKY suggested. You might be surprised by the response. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  9. What I do like about the newer handbook is the way it is laid out. What I don't like is all that was taken out! And a lot of good stuff was taken out. I keep a copy of the 10th edition for reference. It contained a lot more information than the current edition. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  10. Government funding is government funding regardless of the level. Government backed student loans or government grants to private religious based colleges are no different. If the government can't help the BSA because it's a religious (and it isn't) organization, then the government can't help religious based colleges. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  11. "What government benefits, if any, can be extended to a private organization with discriminatory membership requirements based on religious grounds?" The same type that are extended to those organizations that don't discriminate based on religious grounds. The government gives money to private colleges that are way more religious based than the BSA. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  12. Motivation can be tough! Almost every group has their hand out for something! We as leaders have to try to instill in the Scout that this is their Troop & their responsibility. Not mom & dad. And that in a lot of cases is complete culture shock to the Scout AND his parents. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  13. I agree he is not a good role model. Acco40 is correct. It is the call of the CO but the CO needs to have all the facts before making a decision. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  14. Ok the BSA is intolerant because they won't allow people to join who don't meet their joining requirements? Isn't that the same as you have to be a plumber to join the plumbers union? Aren't they being intolerant? And were/are atheists denied use of the area when the BSA wasn't/isn't using it? It seems to me, Merlyn, you are not applying the same rules to all situations here. And that, my fine misguided person, is also intolerance. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  15. Separation of church and state can't be found in the Constitution because it isn't in there! It is an interpretation (and a bad one) of the 1st Amendment. Now back to my question that I posed to Merlyn that he obviously can't answer but I'll ask again anyway: "By having articles written by atheists in their publications this shows the BSA is intolerant of atheists?" And while I'm at it, why do you thing the DOJ filed their brief? Please answer the 1st question before this one. Thanks Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  16. acco40, Require them to wear a uniform or no longer be part of the process. They are not setting a good example by not wearing the uniform. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  17. CubsRgr8, Congrats to your son! Big honor! Let us know when he completes his Ordeal! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 P.S. One Hour, You needn't apologize. Your comment wasn't out of line.
  18. Slander schmander! It's not slander if Merlyn says it but if the BSA does it is! The "double standard" applies. I'd like a "do over" please! Now, what about the tolerance thing? Merlyn, you never answered my question (as usual)!
  19. At the risk of starting trouble, how can you require something that there is no requirement to have? The point I was trying to make is the requirement is up to each unit. Sorry for the confusion. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  20. Like I said, I'm not holding my breath; this just illustrates how the BSA and many of its members promote intolerance towards atheists, and why the government has no business supporting such an organization. By having articles written by atheists in their publications this shows the BSA is intolerant of atheists? Again, I must be missing something. Sounds like tolerance to me. Bob White, I beg to differ. The BSA is NOT a religious organization. It is an organization that ascribes to certain religious beliefs. Someone please tell Bob I posted this. He has me blocked. Thanks Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10(This message has been edited by evmori)
  21. What am I missing? Atheists were denied use of the area? Your upset because the BSA got dibs? Well if that's the case, let's call a "do over"! Fat Old Guy is correct! Scouts do usually get discounted rates at parks. Then again, large groups no matter what the affiliation get discounts. And what about those groups that "always use the area at a certain time". Are you concerned with their affiliation? And by the way, the BSA is not a religious group. Private yes, religious NO! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  22. Congrats! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 I'm a talon you, I'm an Eagle!
  23. There is no requirement to wear the complete uniform or no uniform at all! There is no requirement to even have a uniform! I own a couple or more uniforms. I am always in full uniform for Troop meetings, COH's, etc. Our Troop does require all Scouts to have a Scout shirt with all the patches in the correct places. We also require the SPL & ASPL to have Scout pants. We require all adults to have complete uniforms. We hold uniform inspections from time to time. Nothing regular & very seldom announced ahead of time. When our Troop appears in public as a group, we do look good! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  24. OK they got dibs! They should. They did a ton of work & saved the city a ton of money. But when they weren't using it, anyone could use it, right? Gays, atheists, murderers, the KKK? Am I missing something here? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  25. Merlyn, And by the BSA having this lease, city residents that were atheists or gay weren't allowed to use the portion of the park maintained by the BSA? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
