Page 123 of the SM Handbook - The Scout obtains a signed merit badge application and name of a qualified counselor for that merit badge. Further on page 123 - Scouts may work on any merit badge at any time, assuming they have the approval of their Scoutmaster. So it seems the purpose of the SM signature on a blue card is what KS has stated and also is a form of approval to start working on merit badge. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Why does bsalegal.org condone gross violations of the Scout Law?
evmori replied to Deloe's topic in Issues & Politics
Deloe posted "No, beliefs are not a choice" Huh? I can CHOOSE to believe in Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny or the Tooth Fairy, etc. Your post makes no sense. And what part of "free exercise thereof" don't you understand? And yes I will keep asking what part of the lease was unconstitutional? Based on you beliefs aren't a choice your answer should be interesting. Merlyn, Do you live in the school district in question? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
11 year olds leading 11 year olds, what's your experience?
evmori replied to Fat Old Guy's topic in The Patrol Method
11 year olds leading 11 year olds can be tricky. Still pretty young. But the 12 year old leading 12 year olds etc. doesn't follow. If it did, a 45 year old wouldn't be able to lead another 45 year old and we all know that isn't true. A good leader was a good follower first. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
Ha Ha Ha, Welcome! Ain't leadership fun! Here's what I got from your original post. The PLC planned a hike on this camping trip. Correct? I will assume the entire Patrol knew about the planned hike. Correct? What was this Scout's reaction regarding the planned hike before the camping trip? Did something happen to this Scout that might have prevented him from completing the hike? Bob White's bringing up the four styles of leadership was good but really serves no purpose here. This was a planned event and it seems this Scout knew about this event and decided at the last minute he wouldn't participate. Actually, from the post, defiant! It seems by trying one of the other styles of leadership would only be futile. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

OK let me see if I can make this clearer than Fat Old Guy has. Is a uniform required by the BSA? NO Is the uniform one of the Eight Methods of Scouting? YES Is FScouter starting to sound like Bob White? YES I hope that helps! I will be out of here till June. Family vacation. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Deloe, Huh? What part of "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;" don't you understand? I see the words "free exercise" where they refer to religion. And I'll chant "Freedom OF religion not FROM religion" all I want because that is what the Constitution states! You are way off base! Are you related to Merlyn? And how DOES the lease violate the Constitution? Haven't seen you post any proof it does. Possible that's because it doesn't? This whole conversation is interesting but when this issue get to the Supreme Court & they overturn the decision, maybe the ACLU will shut up and actually fight for something that needs fighting for. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
There is no guideline that states the uniform IS required and by requiring a Scout to wear one for rank advancement is adding to the requirements which is not allowed. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

OGE, I agree. The BOR is the wrong place to let the Scout know he has failed. It is up to the SM to let the Scout know how he is doing along the way. "Doesn't this mean that a poor leader who is active should be advanced over an inactive great leader." Like Bob posted, no one is advance over another in Scouting. But an active Scout will advance faster than an inactive Scout. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
-
If one is a SPL, AS PL, PL, etc. one must demonstrate leadership abilities to serve actively. They go hand in hand. Serving actively isn't just wearing the POR patch. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
-
They cite lack of maturity and demonstration of leadership abilities The focus has been on the lack of maturity part. There is another part - demonstration of leadership abilities. Now this could be the lack of a POR. Or the BOR felt the way the Scout handled his POE needs work. We don't know. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Fat Old Guy has a good point! Wouldn't requiring a uniform be adding to the requirements? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
-
acco40, I disagree. We as Scouter's DO have the power to change things. If we as Scouter's can't change things in Scouting, who can! The uniform should be required! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
-
I love the uniform! Sure it's a little pricey but it is comfortable! I strive to wear it correctly (setting the example stuff) and ask that the Scouts in my Troop do the same. What still amuses me is while the uniforms is one of the methods of Scouting, it isn't required! Funny! Wonder why? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

evmori replied to Deloe's topic in Issues & Politics
Deloe, The version of the Constitution the ACLU should defend is the one that was written. Yes I did make accusations without proof. These accusations are my opinion which I am entitled to! And I still haven't seen anyone disprove my opinion! Reversible errors? What part of the Constitution does the lease violate? None I can see. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -

pack, I think you are correct. But what was their motivation to pick on the BSA's lease & not another or all "special" leases? Were these people denied use of the area? I don't think so. Did the ACLU "talk them into it"? Probably. What else could be their motivation? Merlyn will tell you they felt slighted by the BSA policies regarding membership. I doubt it. What about the policies of other groups who have "special" leases with the city? This suit by the ACLU is aimed at the BSA. Why? Merlyn will tell you because the BSA discriminates. The BSA has membership guidelines that require belief in God. If you don't believe in God you can't join. The Supreme Court ruled the BSA could do this so no laws are being broken! I propose the ACLU is targeting the BSA because the BSA has been kicking their butts in court! And if this goes to the Supreme Court the BSA will kick the ACLU's butt again! And Merlyn, your excuse for ignoring the remainder of my post was not valid! Once again you toss out the "you don't understand" line. You are the one who doesn't understand the 1st Amendment! Free exercise OF religion not FROM religion like your version! "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." Advancement- Repeating same requirement & double dipping

""While not quite ready to go back to 'Finish Tfoot before beginning 2nd Class work' (which would be the death of First Class in the First Year)" Would that be so bad?" If you mean the death of FCFY, no that wouldn't be bad. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -

Merlyn, Since I am not a member of the ACLU and have had nothing to do with any of their lawsuits, I have no specific examples. All I have are theories. Do you have any evidence to disprove my theories? Or will you ignore this part of the post like you ignored the question part of my last post? You're really good at that! So the Establishment Clause is "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" but what about the next line "or prohibiting the free exercise thereof"? Isn't prohibiting prayer in public schools a violation of this? And by allowing prayer in public schools, how is that establishing a religion? Meryln, Why would two families who have nothing to do with Scouting decide to sue the BSA regarding it's lease if they weren't coerced into doing so? Why not sue another organization who has a similar lease with the city? Why pick on the BSA? And by saying "the BSA discriminates" doesn't cut it anymore. The Supreme Court ruled the BSA could set it's own membership guidelines and one of those guidelines is you must believe in God. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -

Where in the Constitution is the "Establishment Clause"? I know where the freedom of religion part is! People do different things for fame. To some, being associated with a lawsuit could be their "15 minutes of fame". I never said anyone offered anyone else money. My point was they could be enticed by the promise of a monetary settlement. I really don't see the ACLU as a defender of the Constitution unless it is their version of the Constitution. EagleInKY, Actually I said it was up to the discretion on the MB counselor whether to accept it or not. Technically, one could argue that a requirement completed prior to starting the MB doesn't count for that MB. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -

What part is coercive? The promise of the chance of $$$$$$ from a settlement, the promise of fame, etc. Creating unreal fear that "if you let them get away with this then ......." If the ACLU was really about the defending if the Constitution then they would fight for the freedom OF religion not the freedom FROM religion. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -

coerce - To compel or constrain to any action; as, to coerce a man to vote for a certain candidate. Yep coerce. And I'm not nuts. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -

As merit badges go, unless it specifically states the requirement can't be used for another badge, it is at the discretion of the merit badge counselor as long as nothing is added or subtracted from the requirements. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -

The ACLU will "raise a fuss" when they see possible constitutional violations; they typically won't (and sometimes can't) file a lawsuit unless they find a local plaintiff. They usually coerce a local to file a complaint. The ACLU is neither American or Civil. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
