Social and Economic Forces and Their Effect on Scouting
evmori replied to Bob White's topic in Issues & Politics
Outdoor adventure isn't always free. There is the cost to get there (gas, oil, etc.), possible permit fees, etc. Any unit that is in an impoverished area might have financial problems that severely limit their outdoor or for that fact any activities outside regular meetings. Social and Economic Forces and Their Effect on Scouting

I agree. Aren't we just talking semantics? (Local program, delivery of the program, etc.) Whatever you want to call it, I believe this is what Bob was trying to say. Different program is not the same as different delivery of the same program. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -

What did I misrepresent, Bob? EagleInKY, You post snuck in while I was responding! The program is identical. The delivery of the program is the difference. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10(This message has been edited by evmori) -
Social and Economic Forces and Their Effect on Scouting

SR540Beaver, If you read Bob's original post you will see Will the programs be identical? No, but do not assume that means that the program with more money is better. I read this as the BSA has different programs which they don't. The program is identical, the delivery can, and probably should be different. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
Social and Economic Forces and Their Effect on Scouting
evmori replied to Bob White's topic in Issues & Politics
Bob, Will the programs be identical? Yes Will the delivery of the program be different? Yes Can the Scouting program be successful anywhere? Yes SR540Beaver, Bob has stated many time there is only one Scouting Program in the USA. He answered his own question "Will the programs be identical?" No. That's why I posted the way I did. Just trying to get some clarity. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
SR540Beaver, I'm not being negative. Just practical. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Social and Economic Forces and Their Effect on Scouting

I thought the Scouting program was the same regardless of where it is delivered? I thought the delivery methods were the difference not the Scouting program? I thought there is only one Scouting program in the USA? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10(This message has been edited by evmori) -
I forgot the 1st rule of Bob White - If I haven't experienced it, it doesn't happen. Yep there are "loads of places" to get uniforms. Most of those places charge for them. For people in impoverished areas essentials for living are a priority & luxuries like uniforms don't get purchased. Nothing happened to "how can we". For some people there are far more important thing - like eating. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Eamonn, My point was to Bob's post. If one can't afford a correct uniform then one can't wear one. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
-
The ability for scouts to wear a correct uniform is no more tied to the income of the scout and his family than is any other of the scouting methods. It certainly is tied to the Scout's income or his families income! If they can't afford decent shoes, they aren't going to shell out major $$$$ for a uniform! Uniforming, like every other part of the scouting program, is dependent on the ability of the unit leaders to make a plan and make it happen. Agreed, but since the BSA doesn't require it's members to own a uniform, it can't be forced. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Community Service? – Opinions Wanted

Let 'em paint away! Sounds like a great service project to me! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
Does your Pack have anything in their bylaws that state if a Cub doesn't pay his dues he doesn't receive his awards? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

I love the uniform. Every Troop meeting I attend & every Scouting event I attend I am in full uniform - setting the example. However, requiring the Troop to be in full uniform for all Troop meetings very seldom works since the BSA doesn't require a Scout to even own a uniform to be a member. Kind of a Catch-22 situation. I really wish the BSA would require all members own & wear the uniforms. That would make things much easier. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

A good Eagle project is one that meets the requirements of an Eagle project & benefits are derived from the project. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

I say no. They can't go. Refund their money & let the Pack absorb the cost. Consider it a lesson learned. Should we try to keep all the boys in the program? Sure! Are all boys cut out for Scouting? No! And from what I have read, this by fits in the "not cut out for Scouting" group. Too bad. Kids like him really need the program. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

"Does the method -- as long as it is quick and humane -- really matter?" Would you shoot your dog instead of having it put down at a shelter?

Congrats to you and your son. I felt the same way when my son earned his Eagle. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

twocub has a good idea. It seems there are only a few who really want to be Scouts. The rest seem to be trouble makers. Pull your son out & find another unit. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

When I was a Cubmaster, I would stand up front with signs up for as long as it took for everyone to quiet down. Only needed to do that at the 1st two meetings. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

The one thing I noticed is those boys with broken families seem to be the biggest problems???? Wonder, hmmm, probably a topic for a different thread. Who plans the calendar? Does the Troop have regular PLC's? Are the Scouts learning and advancing? Was the SPL elected or appointed? Are there plans to replace the SM? Lots of unanswered questions. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Wow Ron! You must really want me to post it! Sure. Give me a little time for our ASPL to dig it up & I'll be more than happy to post it! Unless, of course, our ASPL says no which I don't think will happen. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Not bad, OGE. Our ASPL wrote one about the swimming checks. It was a hoot! The punchline dealt with the "non-swimmers" test! It was the hit of closing campfire! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Hops is doing a good job! But how would the family & friends of this lost Scout be offended by what was in the thread? If it was my son, I would appreciate any & all help! And don't we 2nd guess a ton of stuff in these threads every day? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
