Eagledad, Merlyn a bigot? Where did you ever get that idea? Just because he seems to hate anyone who has religion and doesn't agree with him? Know what Merlyn, if you are worried about the BSA "leeching off" "your" government then you are clearly paranoid. There are other organizations who "leech off" our government that are much worse than the BSA. And since it is also "my" government, I'm more than happy they support this fine organization. I would have to say the inane!

And anyone who wants to join the band can join. Not true. If that person has absolutely no musical ability they can't join. Discrimination against the musically impaired! Call the ACLU! Get a lawsuit started! Little Johnny can't play any instrument but wants to be a member of the band! He should be allowed! Discrimination! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

So if a school district can "lawfully discriminate" against a student who doesn't live in their school district, why can't that school district charter a BSA unit since the BSA also "lawfully discriminates"? In Merlyn's analogy what you have is a public school district allowing a club to meet. Now this club has membership requirements. All clubs do. And so does the BSA. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

NJ, I understand you point. I don't agree with it but I understand it. Atheists don't meet the membership requirements of the BSA therefore can't join. That's not discrimination. Public schools don't have to accept a student who doesn't live in their school district. Same thing. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Actually, Merlyn, Cub Scout & Boy Scout packs don't exclude atheists. Atheists don't meet the membership requirements of the BSA therefore, excluding themselves from the BSA. I understand just fine. Wish you could. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Merlyn, Atheists rights? Are these different from non-atheist rights? Don't atheists have the same rights as all Americans? Or are you looking for "special" rights for atheists? And your continual "you are incapable of learning" is getting old! I am capable of learning more than you know! It is you who are close-minded & incapable of learning. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

How is their pledge to not "unlawfully discriminate" meaningless? Would it be less meaningless if they "lawfully discriminated"? You make no sense, Merlyn! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

This might be a little off track but has anyone noticed Merlyn only contributes when there is "discrimination" involved? If he truly cared about the BSA he would contribute to other parts of the forums. It seems Merlyn feels it is his sole responsibility to remind us that he doesn't like the BSA because he feels the BSA discriminates! When actually all the BSA is doing is what the Supreme Court declared they could do. Now Merlyn stands behind those rulings the Supreme Court handed down when they support his personal agenda. He's just ticked off the Supreme Court didn't agree with him this time. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

I have seen shocking bigotry and unseemly venom, especially from evmori. My posts in this thread were: mhager, Were you an atheist when you were a Scout and earned your Eagle? The BSA is a private organization that has membership requirements. Since you don't meet those requirements, you can't be a member. and "Religious discrimination is immoral." Huh? Based on what definition of morality? Sounds like sour grapes! mhager couldn't find someone who agrees with him so now we are the bad ones! If you think my posts are bigoted & full of venom, you must be reading something I can't see. I am neither bigoted or hateful. Too bad the same can't be said for you. I will add you to my prayer list. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10(This message has been edited by evmori)

#'s 1 & 3 are good questions. #2 really has no place at a BOR. A better question might be "How have you demonstrated the last point of the Scout Law in your everyday life?" Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

So, one can become a member of the OA without going through the Ordeal? Wish I would have know that! The Ordeal I went through was something I would not have done if I had a choice! But I didn't! A Scout does have a choice to participate in a snipe hunt! Fuzzy, I have no personal dislike for the OA! I think the OA should bring back the old "tap out" instead of the vanilla "call out" ceremony used now! I endured the Ordeal and completed my Vigil Honor. I was honored to be chosen the 1st time and just as honored to be chosen the last time! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

If the BSA wanted to ban smoking, the G2SS would read "Smoking is prohibited at any and all Scout functions." But it doesn't. Instead the G2SS uses "should" and "may". You shouldn't but nothing says you can't. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

firstpusk, If you want to start a fight about religion, start one with me. Rooster7 is way out of your league & will eat you alive! He is a Christian (like myself) who has proclaims a personal relationship with our Lord and Savior - Jesus Christ. I have done the same. However, R7 is more well versed in the Scriptures than I am. The Bible is not a weapon. If you consider it as such, then you just don't understand it. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Hazing is usually associated with an initiation. Usually performed by frats. To become an OA member, one must complete their Ordeal - which could be considered an initiation - which could be considered hazing. And yes it is different from a snipe hunt. One does not have to participate in a snipe hunt to become a member of a Troop or Patrol. One must complete their Ordeal to become a member of the OA. If you consider snipe hunts hazing then the OA Ordeal is hazing. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

whew! I'm relieved. For a moment I thought you might be one of those nuts who opposes the Endangered Species Act and actually thinks it is OK to destroy habitat for monetary gain No I'm one of those nuts who believes the PETA folk have no clue! PETA = "Put Everything Tasty Away" Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Dominion over doesn't mean abuse. Abuse of any living thing is wrong. Fishing is not abuse! Neither is hunting! The PETA ilk really need to get out more! If they were actually for ethical treatment of animals they would focus on cock fights, dog fights, etc. where actual abuse occurs! Instead they head out in the woods & try to stop hunters! Morons! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Let's see ..... God gave us dominion over the animals ........

A Scout or Scout leader can be a member if whatever organization they want! Now if a Scout or Scout leader becomes an avowed homosexual or an atheist because of their membership in these organizations then that conflicts with the membership requirements of the BSA & the BSA has every right to terminate their membership in the BSA. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
-
The BSA has no rule or reg that states parents can't be the MB counselor for their sons. Some Troops have this as their policy. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Maybe being a member of a homosexual organization doesn't constitute being a homosexual. But being an atheist doesn't meet the membership requirements to be a member of the BSA. "Our youth will judge us by our actions." Then if I am a member of the BSA (which I am) and a Scout tells me he is an atheist and I let him advance through the ranks of Scouting, what type of example am I setting for him? Not the kind that is trustworthy. Safe maybe, but not trustworthy. And being trustworthy is more important than being safe. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

"Like the Spiral Scouts? Or other such relatively unknown scouting societies? True. But there is a drawback. You can't earn your Eagle in the Spiral Scouts. They may have an equivalent award, but it doesn't carry such weight as the Eagle does. They might not have the funding to provide similar services and programs. Kudos to the other organizations for their work, but let's face it. There is no other organization that matches up to the Boy Scouts." No a boy can't earn his Eagle in Spiral Scouts. And a person not in the military can't earn a military award for bravery. And a person who isn't a member of a professional sports team can't be Player of the Year. If a person doesn't meet the membership requirements that person can't earn the awards & ranks that go with membership. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
