For what purpose? To say to the public "We are on top of this & want to ensure it doesn't happen again". If you had done a background check of Mr.Smith just 3-days ago nothing would have shown up. Background checks reveal past convictions and nothing else. Mr. Smith had no prior convictions. While we don't know this for sure,I would agree that is a true statement. I think I posted the same thing awhile back. And while new background checks might not turn anything up, it would be a good step to take. Shows the public the BSA is doing everything it can to prevent this from happening again and not just sweeping it under the rug. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Maybe it would be a good idea for National to redo the bachground checks on ALL employees at National and ALL councils. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Mr. Smith pled guilty to distributing child porn. We don't know if he is a pedophile or not. I'm not sure what he was charged with initially & it is possible he pled guilty to a lesser charge to stay out of jail. It seems he is being treated as a 1st time offender and been given leniency. Personally, I think anyone who is involved in anyway with kiddie porn should be tossed in jail! Let the population of a maximum security prison handle them! Bob, I have asked my questions. I have made no allegations. Read my posts. If the Catholic church had asked questions and investigated they might have avoided the legal battles they got involved in! I don't want to see the BSA end up in the same position! If you do, then you are doing a disservice to the BSA! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Bob, OGE was asking for clarification on my statement. And doesn't it make you a bit inquisitive as to the character of the man who was in charge of Youth Protection for the BSA? Maybe the reason the BSA's youth protection policies are so good is because this guy knew what to look for! And, Bob, it is my right to ask the questions I have been asking. You don't have to like them. In fact, I don't really care if you do or don't. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4::10

OGE, No I don't want the BSA to be guilty. Actually, I want them to be found completely innocent! But not just because they said so. Because an investigation proved them to be innocent! Is that wrong? Bob, Ever google someone's name & find stuff that surprised you? Ever do a search on something innocent & find something that surprised you? In your case probably not, but it does happen. And it is possible that someone other than the parents found their son's pictures on the web & informed the parents & that started the investigation! I am doing nothing more than asking questions that should be asked so the BSA can clear the air as to their involvement. If you don't think that is right, you are entitled to your opinion. But the Catholic church sloughed this type of thing under the rug & it cost them big time in nasty press & legal fees. I don't want to see the same thing happen to the BSA. And exactly what allegations have I made? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

"Excuse me but doesn't someone have to hire the conniving lawyer?" Yes someone does have to hire a lawyer. "Doesn't that person have to be someone who could prove direct injury or loss due the BSA's active or passive participation in the crime committed by Mr. Smith?" This would be a civil trail, not criminal. Proof is different in civil cases. "Just who is that person going to be? A parent of one of the children in the photos?" Could be. "Do you think that parent exists?" Could be. "How would they know unless they were involved in the making or distribution of the photo?" Child porn can occur without the parents knowing. The parents might find them on the internet by accident! "You think the photographer is going to step forward?" I doubt it but then why would it even matter. "Who has grounds in this case against the BSA?" Anyone. There are a lot of crazies out there looking for a quick way to make a buck! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

NO Parents on campouts- A recruiting issue
evmori replied to anarchist's topic in Open Discussion - Program
This can be a recruiting issue for those parents that like to camp! It can also be a recruiting tool to get new leaders. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
As usual, Bob, you missed the point. If you pleading guilty to setting fire to your neighbors house should we investigate your employer's prior konowledge of your pyromania. Yes you should! Why wouldn't you? And considering the way the BSA has handled these type of situations in the past I would expect a complete investigation. I am not saying the BSA did anything wrong. And if they didn't, they should welcome an investigation. Oh for Pete's sake...EVERYBODY dragged their feet for decades in addressing child abuse! For centuries for that matter. Some people still do. So that makes it OK? I don't think so. I don't think the BSA is in anyway at fault here and I would be surprised if they were. All I am saying is there are questions that need investigated and answered. Clearing the air so to speak. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Bob, You analogies make no sense & aren't even related to the topic. From what we know, this guy was using his home PC to commit his crimes. However, his work PC has been confiscated and we don't know what they have found on it. I really hope nothing inappropriate. Like I posted before, if this guy wasn't in the system, his background check would come up clean! And this can happen anywhere. It is only big news because he worked for the BSA national office AND was involved in youth protection! This is, if nothing else, bad press for the BSA & the fallout has yet to be seen. There could be lawsuits filed against the BSA because of this. Not necessarily valid ones since, but they could occur. And some are questioning if the BSA might have known about this guy & did nothing based on past history. And it is a valid question that needs to be asked, investigated & answered! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Merlyn, You sure that isn't a private school that's chartering that BSA unit? And by you trying to get the BSA kicked out of all public schools & military bases, you are tromping on my civil rights! Think the ACLU will take my case? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
-
Why then are scouters on this thread assuming otherwise? I am awed that some want to give the defendant his time before the court before they count him guilty, but the BSA they are willing to presume as guilty when there has not even been a suggestion of wrong doing by anyone involved in the case. I don't think anyone wants to give him his time in court although he is entitled to it. And I think the reason others on this board are questioning the BSA is because of the way pedophiles have been dealt with in the past by the BSA. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
-
Some one will sue the BSA because they will somehow blame the BSA for this! And that is wrong, unless the BSA had an inkling something was amiss & did nothing. If this guy was not in the system anywhere for anything, then all the background checks in the world would come back clean. If this guy is in the system & the BSA overlooked it, then that IS a problem. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Which lawyers are you refering to? I would think the lawyers the BSA has on retainer! There will undoubtedly be lawsuits filed against the BSA due to this! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

WOW! I can't think of any other response other than WOW!

I have had experience with this situation. When we dropped to one patrol, the Scouts still wanted a SPL and a PL. I don't think there is any violation of rules or regs if you don't have a SPL. I would leave it up to the Scout in your Troop. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Pink Flamingos, A Legitimate BSA Fund-raiser ?
evmori replied to Greeneagle5's topic in Unit Fundraising
So if the local SE approves a wine & cheese party as a Troop fundraiser, that would be OK? I don't really like the idea presented here. It sound more like soliciting donations than a fundraiser. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
We have always offered to store & administer any medication for the Scout during summer camp. We leave it up to the discretion of the parents. However, if they do decide to have us store & administer medication, they must sign a form granting us permission to store & administer the medication to their son. The parents in our Troop usually take us up on our offer. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

In our Troop, we request the Scouts bring their handbooks to each & every camping trip. We always refer to them & there are times when a Scout will ask a question & we ask them "Did you look in your handbook?" Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Torveaux, Personal liberty issue? Huh? I would bet those who complain if the uniform were made mandatory are the same ones who wouldn't scoff at shelling out $100 for juniors new football or band or hockey uniform. Personal liberty issue? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
-
I would bet if the BSA made the uniform a requirement, the price would go down. More people would have to buy it therefore they could be sold for less and still make the same profit. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Excellent response OGE! Thanks for all you do on this site. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

If the Scoutmaster approves the service project and it is used for the proper rank, I say count it! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

I think what we are saying is the uniform pants are expensive. And they are. And I would still like a definition of "built bad". That one puzzles me! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

I have always interpreted "under the sky" as in a tent or trail shelter or lean-to. Not a building like a cabin or hotel. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
