  1. Yeah yeah! I got caught up in the DNA abbreviation & thought Merlyn was talking genetics! Sorry! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  2. If the scout or his family cannot afford to even obtain a pre-owned uniform then how the heck can they afford the trip to jamboree? And I said they couldn't afford a uniform where? All I posted was they don't own one. Why? Because the BSA doesn't require one to be a member! But does require one to attend Jamboree. That's the same as a school saying to enroll you don't need a uniform but to eat in the lunch room on steak day you do! Bad form! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  3. How can the uniform method be a requirement if a uniform isn't required to be a member of the BSA? And how is the uniform method dependent on the advancement method? Or visa versa? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  4. Ed, apparently, you didn't get my initial point. Your post hammering alcoholics as immoral was so off base as to require a retraction or apology. jd, I wasn't hammering alcoholics. My point was a background check won't find an alcoholic who has never committed a crime. packsaddle, What I posted was "For me .........." For someone else of another faith it might be different. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  5. I think you missed the point, Bob. The uniform is NOT required to be a BSA member, but it is required if you want to attend Jamboree. Now, what about the unit in which no one owns a uniform. They can't attend Jamboree unless they buy one? How is that right? Sure the uniform is one of the Methods of Scouting. But the Methods of Scouting are not requirements and they are not interdependent on each other. That said, I agree with acco. It is hypocritical. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  6. By the way, DNA is yet another person who could not join the BSA Ya gotta explain this one! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  7. I believe immorality, at it's most basic level, must include intent or, at least, a disregard for the negative consequences of your actions. Don't agree, jd. Based on that definition, everyone is immoral. What might be negative consequences for one person aren't for another. Morality is tough to define. For me it is living as a Christian. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  8. So it's OK for National to require a full uniform for Jamboree because Jamboree is a special event but not OK for a unit to require a full uniform for Troop meetings? Sorry but that is hypocritical especially since National doesn't require and Scout or Scouter to even own a uniform! How can an organization require it's members wear something they isn't required to be owned to be a member? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  9. How does the Scout Oath & Law address meeting times, duty rosters, when the money is due for the camping trip, etc.? They don't. These are the type of things units need to have in writing as rules, guidelines, laws, regulations, whatever you want to call them. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  10. How does the Scout Oath & Law deal with meeting times? How does the Scout Oath & Law deal with dues? How does the Scout Oath & Law deal with duty rosters? How does the Scout Oath & Law deal with the meeting time to go camping? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  11. 1. Is Mr. Z morally straight? Mr Z. Has been selected by the chartering organization and has filled out the adult application which has come back with no red flags. That doesn't mean Mr. Z is moral. All that means is no illegal activity showed up! Mr. Z could be a closet alcoholic with no criminal record! Bob, Thanks for being the morality police but you are making assumptions that are totally unfounded! You might not think that having a subscription to Playboy is a good thing. And actually I agree with you. But that in and of itself doesn't disqualify Mr. Z from being a BSA leader. And it doesn't make him stupid. That isn't a very Scout-like comment. But then again, I guess you have never done anything stupid. Legal doesn't equal moral. Never will. Can morality be legislated? Nope. Too many variables. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  12. The Insignia Guide. Not the Insignia Requirements. A tux isn't required for a prom! A uniform isn't required for Scouts! When wearing the uniform, should it be worn correctly? By all means. But requiring a uniform is adding to the requirements and that isn't allowed. Still a little puzzled how there can be regulations for something that isn't required. It is one of the eight Methods of Scouting. Not a hard & fast rule. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  13. "No, it's actually a violation of BSA Uniform regulations." Hmm... How can there be a Uniform regulation if the uniform isn't required? What is there to violate? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  14. So God knows what we are going to do! We don't! Ergo free will! Not really rocket science, is it! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  15. "Changing the uniform is a violation of the BSA policies" Isn't it actually contrary to a Method of Scouting, not a violation of a BSA policy since the BSA doesn't require a uniform? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  16. Just read this entire thread. I was on vacation & just got back. It appears the "non-rule" crowd assumes (bad thing to do) everything that could or would happen in Scouting is covered by the Oath & Law. It appears the "rule" crowd feels there are areas not covered by the Oath & Law & therefore rules, bylaws, guidelines, etc. need to be written down. I can see where both sides have valid points. The Oath & Law cover 90% of what could & would happen in Scouting. No research done to get to that number, just my thoughts. The other 10% (meeting times, when money is due for camping trips, etc.) is not covered by the Oath & Law & Troop rules, bylaws, regulations, guidelines (call them what you like) are very helpful for keeping everyone on the same page. Doesn't each summer camp issue a list of do's & don'ts or bring & do not bring lists? Troop guidelines (which is what I will call them) don't need to deal with what is covered in the Oath & Law. Troop guidelines need to deal with what isn't covered. And since we are not allowed to punish Scouts, isn't sending them home for any reason punishment? A consequence yes but also punishment? And isn't punishment a consequence? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  17. Barry, Excellent insight! Great post! Some good points made regarding NSP & mixed age patrols! Thanks. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  18. John, There are no BSA internet policies for units. Only guidelines. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  19. dug, Faith isn't sweeping the dirt under the rug. Faith is believing without seeing. I believe in God. Never seem Him gut I know he is there. The winds blows. I can't see it but I know it's there. You can't define God with logic. God created logic. God created everything! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  20. "Is a rapist immoral? yes. But there is no evidence that nude photographs cause people to rape, but in fact that man in your example had pre-existing issues and immoralities that would cause him to rape and there is nothing to say that going to the beach wouldn't cause the same reaction, or walking in the park." Is a rapist immoral? More than likely. Why is he a rapist? Could it be from viewing Playboy? Yes it could. Don't make assumptions about my post to justify your answer. Justify your answers on your own, please. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  21. I don't find having a magazine like playboy to be immoral. First of all it is legal and no law is broken. Second of all it does not cause harm to anyone. I don't think Playboy is immoral either. But just because it's legal & no laws were broken doesn't make it moral. That just makes it legal. And as far as not causing harm to anyone, that is not necessarily true. What about the guy who reads Playboy & gets all riled up from the pictures & letters & then goes out & rapes a female because he got all lathered up looking at the pictures & reading the letters? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  22. DugNevius, What you fail to understand is faith is in the mix. You didn't account for faith! Logic is man made. And not everything is logical. Nice try, though. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  23. 1. Is Mr. Z morally straight? Can't answer. Not enough information. 2. Do you have enough information to determine if Mr. Z is morally straight? No 3. Is Mr. Z performing his duty to God? Can't answer. Not enough information. 4. Should you say anything to Mr. Z about this? Should you report this to the Committee or the COR? Does it matter if you know that the CO, a church, strongly condemns such material? No to all. 5. If you were the head of BSA, how would you go about determining whether a person with a subscription to Playboy is morally straight or not? How would you determine whether such a person should be allowed to be a Scout leader? You can't base a persons morality on a magazine subscription! I'm gonna refrain from any further comments till later. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  24. packsaddle, Ya ruined my appetite! I now have this image in my mind of a 350 lb Scouter bending over to tie his shoe! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
