I never said nor have I implied the Scouts should rely on the adults if they forget something. That is an interpretation that Bob made that is completely off base. What I said was we as adults need to be prepared as an example for the Scouts. Zahnada interpreted my post exactly the way I meant it! And didn't the founder of the Scouting say when asked what we are to be prepared for "Anything"? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Actually, tj, God will judge us on every aspect of our lives! The bible does support that. As to how vs who we love is just a way to spin the bible to fit your needs. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Flashlight, extra batteries & bulbs, soap, small wash cloth, Deet.

Zahnada, Good summation! Thanks. And for the record, the adults do not need to be prepared to "bail out" the Scouts. The adults need to set the example by being prepared. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

For a weekend camping trip, other than clothes - rain gear, knife, fork, spoon, cup, Scout handbook, appropriate shoes, pocket knife, gloves (weather depending), hat.

So, Bob, what you are saying is if we as adults aren't prepared we still should expect the Scouts in our charge to be prepared? Leading by bad example? And your interpretation of my post is completely inaccurate. Big surprise! And you are in no way on topic here, Bob. This is about cooking, not you. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

OGE, Good point! I'm gonna make an assumption here (don't like doing this) that the ASM feels that if he/she asks the Scout if he know the requirement & the Scout says "Yes", then the book gets signed. If this is the case, the ASM needs some serious work. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

"True but as an adult we need to be prepared for just this type of situation so the Scouts will have a better understanding of what "Be Prepared" means." A FREE Lexan water bottle will go to the first person who can find anything in the official BSA scouting program to support that opinion. Being prepared has never been about counting on a leader to bring equipment for you that you were responsible for. You amaze me, Bob! You really missed my point! If we as adult leaders are not prepared, how can we expect to teach Scouts how to be prepared? Who said anything about counting on a leader for equipment your were responsible for? Once again, your interpretation is way off! Back to cooking. Vicki, Emeril is on the Food Network! Great recipes & spices. You should be able to pick some up at the store. His Original & Italian are a good place to start. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

OGE, Enough is enough at the 1st BOR. Nip it in the bud! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Showing a scout that if he doesn't come prepared that an adult will bail him out is not what "be prepared" is about. True but as an adult we need to be prepared for just this type of situation so the Scouts will have a better understanding of what "Be Prepared" means. Now, back to cooking! Anyone like Emeril? I love his seasonings! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Prairie, I see the BSA as a youth organization with a high moral standard. Thanks for the complement! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Simple! Don't pass him! Explain why he isn't being passed. Then set a time for him to come back for another BOR! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Cooking cooking cooking! That's what the thread is all about! I love to cook. I love to teach the Scouts how to cook over a fire, in dutch ovens, on a propane stove, etc. There are so many ways to cook so many things allowing hot dogs & ramen noodles & the like is absurd! Heck, reheating soup even falls in the same category! Cooking requires some planning & work. Reheating requires no planning & minimal work. Teach them to cook! It isn't hard! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Well, God did destroy two entire cities because of rampant homosexuality. And a Scout is to be morally straight. These are two excellent reasons not to allow homosexuals in Scouting. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

SM issue violation of YP and more

Semper, Although the YP violation seems minor, it still needs to be reported. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -

While the assumption seems very likely, do we know if the original poster is a Scout & not an adult leader? If he is a Scout, this is a YP violation. The other issue about the money was the correct thing to do. Your Troop policy should be followed or should be scrapped. From what you posted it sound like the money was never going to be transferred. A Scout is trustworthy. GopherJudy, It sounds like the ASM want the Scouts to experience a different style of cooking. Is it possible the Troop is planning a backpacking trip in the future? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

OGE, Nope! But they have to quack! There were a lot of poster who in one form or the other said "Let 'em go hungry." I wasn't one of those posters. I don't consider excuses valid reasons for not doing something. Nice spin on the methods, Bob. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Zahnada, Excellent points & very well stated. When we go camping, we (adults) always bring extra rain gear. Why? In case it is needed. Nothing worse than having a soaking wet Scout go home on Sunday & tell mom & dad he got drenched because he forgot his poncho & no one would lend him one. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
-
The real key is to not allow hot dogs & ramen to be part of the menu! Cooking can be a lot of fun & also a lot of work. But if done properly can yield some great meals! Excuses are bad reasons for not doing something. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

There might be better ways but very few are as effective.

There was absolutely no scouting or leadership skills employed by the scout leader in this real-life situation. Leadership was used! Results were achieved! You might not like the leadership that was used but from the post, satisfactory results were achieved! And yep Bob, this a big disagreement between you & I. And that's OK. We don't have to agree on everything. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

That's the "I'm hungry so I'm gonna eat" patrol method!
-
So it's OK if they use an excuse not to do something? What is that teaching them? Not very ethical in my book.
-
If you read the very 1st post in this thread that stated "My job is to help boys make ethical decisions, not to make them do want I want them to." you will understand my question. Barry, Good points. Thanks for your perspective. msnowman, C'mon over! We have room! And I'll even let you take the garbage out. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
