  1. You amaze me, Merlyn! You have no interest in anything but the destruction of the BSA! Why? Because it's popular! If you really had eliminating religion from public life you would be going after every group that has policies similar to the BSA! Are you? I doubt it! And if I recollect from my grade school history, our founding fathers left their native lands for America because of people like you! People who wanted to take away their religious freedom! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  2. We both know that 'believing' in God means many things. Do they, as the Amplified Bible puts it, 'rely on, cling to, trust in' God... in any form? I would hope so, but I don't know. The BSA doesn't require us to "rely on, cling to, trust in, etc" God. It requires us to believe in God. Nothing more. I, as a Christian, would hope this belief in God would develop into a trust in God, a reliance on God, a clinging to God but that is over and above the requirement. If a Scout came to me and wanted to learn more about God, I would be happy to teach him. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  3. CA, As a former SM, I feel for you. I completely agree with the recommendations you made to the committee. The committee dropped the ball here. Keep us informed! I'll add you to my prayer list. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  4. And your situation became hypothetical when you were at a loss for words? You asked the question! All I did was answer. And you kept asking! Ah yes but that was all hypothetical! I'm beginning to think you are hypothetical, Merlyn! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  5. Only reason I asked was is it possible it was something your son didn't like? Just asking.
  6. Ed, I see you still can't follow a conversation, even when it's written down. Guess you didn't like my reply. Oh well. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  7. Then there was the time on patrol forgot their cooking utensils. The other patrol wouldn't lend them anything. Neither would the adults. The SPL ask me if we (the adults) would help the one patrol. We discussed it and said sure! We gathered the utensil-less patrol around the fire circle & proceeded to teach them to make with no utensils. The other patrol stopped what they were doing to watch & they joined in! Great time! Good food! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  8. packsaddle, Not sure. Don't even want to speculate because I haven't been around those denominations & religions you listed in a Scouting setting. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  9. mn_scout, While there is no written rule the adults should eat after the Scouts if everyone is eating together it is just a common courtesy. If for whatever reason there is a food shortage, adults can adapt easier than kids. PB&J should be on the table for every meal. It is issued as summer camp & when I took Wood Badge we were issued PB&J and it was expected to be on the table along with a loaf of bread. The purpose is most people will eat PB&J if they don't like the other food. If PB&J had been on the table the Scout who went hungry would have had the option of making a sandwich. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  10. Why discriminate against atheists? Duty to God comes to mind. How can a person do duty to God if they don't believe He exists? Please don't include me in the religious neutral camp. I am a Christian and the Scouts in my Troop know that. Not because I beat them over the head with it (because I don't) but because of the way I act. Sure there are many Scouter's that are religious neutral but I would bet they all believe in God. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  11. The BSA doesn't ban them, but a lot of councils do. Mine does. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  12. We have always had the hard & fast rule if you use the f word you go home. No questions asked. Sounds like this Scout has anger management issues. Also, sounds like this is one of those kids who really needs the program. That said, I would recommend to your Troop Committee they suspend the Scout for 6 months. This suspension would include a loss of POR. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  13. We meet in the fellowship hall of the church. It's big enough to hold SM conferences at on end while the Troop is at the other end. When I was the SM, I did a lot of SM conferences on camping trips or at summer camp. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  14. There was no PB & J and bread on the table? There should have been. What was for breakfast? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  15. When we go camping, the adults eat last after all the Scouts are fed. Doesn't sound like that happened here! Should have! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  16. Merlyn, Churchs don't pay taxes nor do they receive government funds. Your whole question is pointless. But that really doesn't surprise me. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  17. I see no need for another requirement that would be vague. There are enough already. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  18. Well since the government isn't paying they get no say! Now back to your list! NJ, Let's see. I vote for the people on the school board in my school district. They decide on the curriculum. If they decide on something I don't like I can yell & scream & shout but unless a whole lotta other do the same, that curriculum stands! Being a member of a private organization is not a right. If you don't meet the membership requirements you can't join. No one is forcing anyone to join the BSA. And a public school chartering a BSA unit is not establishing a religion! And it is not fostering discrimination! And it is exactly like any club or group that is affiliated with the school that has membership requirements! If you can't play football you will be cut from the team! Sounds like discrimination to me! Let's get the ACLU on that one! ACLU = Another Cash Lovers Union. Nothing more! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  19. No Merlyn. Why would the government have any say in church creed?
  20. And if churches are funded with my tax dollars, I get to set that church's official creed, right? Only if you are a member of that church's governing body. Your school district chooses curriculum without your input & your tax dollars are spent there! That is unless you are a member of the school board. And your state taxes pay for a bunch of stuff you have no say in! Same with your federal tax dollars! So in answer to your question no you have no say! Get back to your list! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  21. Double post!(This message has been edited by evmori)
  22. Maybe he could send your dollar to the ACLU? I wouldn't send the stuff my cay leaves in her litter box to the ACLU.
  23. ...The "establishment of religion" clause of the First Amendment means at least this: Neither a state nor the Federal Government can set up a church. Neither can pass laws which aid one religion, aid all religions, or prefer one religion over another... Everson v. Board of Education. And ...We repeat and again reaffirm that neither a State nor the Federal Government can constitutionally force a person "to profess a belief or disbelief in any religion." Neither can constitutionally pass laws or impose requirements which aid all religions as against non-believers, and neither can aid those religions based on a belief in the existence of God as against those religions founded on different beliefs... And how is a public school chartering a BSA unit a violate this? No one is forced to join the BSA so this argument is moot! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  24. We went cabin camping the weekend before Thanksgiving one year. The PLC asked if the adults would do the cooking. We happily agreed but told the PLC we would give them the shopping list & the Scouts would be responsible for buying the food. The PLC agreed. We decided we would have turkey with stuffing & mashed potatoes & peas & cranberry's. When we gave the shopping list to the Scouts who were doing the shopping one questioned why we had bulk sausage on the list. We explained it was for the stuffing. "Eww! I'm not eating that!" was the response. Well, we asked what their mom used in her stuffing & the reply was "It isn't sausage"! Well, the Scout's mom who responded was in the room so we asked what she used in her turkey stuffing. Among the ingredients she named was sausage! You could have driven a train through the Scout's gaping mouth! My point of relaying this is a lot of the time, the Scouts don't understand what make up certain things we cook. I think this is one of the reasons they tend to stick to the prepackaged stuff like mac & cheese & ramen. Part of our job as leaders to teach them how to cook & how easy it really is to make something that is very good & tasty! Another part of our job is to teach them not to always look for the easy way. Sometimes a little more time & effort makes a big difference. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
