Scouters as communist weapons dealers
evmori replied to Bob White's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Eamonn, Since uniforming is more of a guideline, I would say no to your question. I'll take that $64,000 in $20's Bob. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -

I find it fascinating that you find abiding by the law as unusual. Sad more than fascinating I guess. My last comment on this - What you find fascinating is you own interpretation of what I posted. And it is incorrect. Eamonn, To me guidelines are just that - guidelines not rules. Suggestions no "You must do this". madkins007 post says it better. OGE, I would use th PM feature with Bob, but it would end up here anyways. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
Scouters as communist weapons dealers

Never broke a law? C'mon Bob! Never went 1 mph over the speed limit? Never over parked at a parking meter? Never crossed against the light? Never jaywalked? Never coasted through a stop sign? A Scout is trustworthy! Rules are to be followed. Some are more important than others. Some are actually stupid. But they need to be followed. What is the difference in a rule & guideline? Are all guidelines rules? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
Eat scouts! Eww! I hear they're tough & boney!

Well, that was fun! What's next?

Rules are to be followed whether we like them or not. Not everything in a BSA handbook or manual is a rule. There are lots of guidelines. Guidelines aren't rules even though some of us think so. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
On thing some a failing to take into account is we are involved in the BSA. Most of the parents who say "scouts are too busy with other activities" aren't & see Scouts as just "another activity". Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Not everyone drives a car but there are still laws that control how you do it when you do. If you don't drive you don't need to know the laws. Bad analogy. I thought all the rules & regulations we needed were covered by the Scout Oath & Law? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
CA, You have stated you have documented everything so far. Has the committee? Do you have the minutes of the meeting & re-vote? Make sure you have those. Get as much on paper as you can regarding this incident. If this rumor is true, this could get ugly. If it isn't you will be prepared to handle something like this should it happen again. Be prepared! Now, get back to your Troop. You have boys there who need your leadership! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Sounds like over scheduling to me. Johnny wants to play football, be on the chess team, join Scouts, take piano lessons & work on his programming skills! Plus go to school & do his normal everyday chores AND have free time with his buddies! Something is gonna suffer! And mom & dad should see this & explain to Johnny he is over scheduled & needs to decide what he really wants to do! The best Troop/Pack in the world won't make a difference if Johnny doesn't realize he can't do it all! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Eye catching title! Very inappropriate but eye catching. I like the uniform. And As I have posted in the past, I wear mine to all Scout meeting & appropriate functions. That being said, it is interesting the BSA has a rule for something that isn't required. Spiney, Excellent point! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
Incoming!

kittel, And I applaud you for being up front about it! Semper, I doubt if he forgot the skill. I would bet he never learned the skill. I have taught swimming to many Cub Scouts & other youth & I can tell you that when someone learns the proper strokes, they never doggy paddle again. Doggy paddling is a lot of work compared to using the proper stroke. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

"If he is trustworthy, you should be able to ask him about this & get a truthful answer." Why would you even ask him, and what difference does it make? If he says he did no swimming for the rank requirements, you will do what? If he says he did swim for the rank requirements, you will do what? Why would you ask him? His inability to swim at the canoe training? What would you do if he says no? Remind him a Scout is trustworthy & help him honestly complete those requirements. What would you do if he says yes? Then you have a Scout Spirit issue. Living the Oath & Law in your everyday life. OneHour, He might be physically fit but cycling requires more than riding your bike to Scout meetings & hiking requires more than walking to Scout meetings. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
-
Interesting. How old is this kid? Have you looked at the requirements for hiking & cycling? They are no walk in the park. Swimming is the "easiest" of the three. I'm not sure there is anything you can do. If he is trustworthy, you should be able to ask him about this & get a truthful answer. If you don't get a truthful answer then you have a Scout Spirit issue. Regardless of what happens, this doesn't sound like it's gonna be pretty. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

No, my motives are a FACT. They are unknowable to you, but that does not make them "not-a-fact". Ahh! The unknowable fact! motive - An emotion, desire, physiological need, or similar impulse that acts as an incitement to action. Yep unknowable! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Moral support. Ask if there is anything they can help with. Introduce themselves. Get out of the car.

CA, You beat me to the punch! You are exactly correct. Those are my opinions. Merlyn, Your motives are only fact to you. And why are your motives hidden? And why is what you want to do known only to you? Opinions are not lies. You might not like them & you might not agree with them. But all that means is we have a difference of opinion. As I have stated before - I don't lie. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Lack of parental involvement is affecting more than Scouting. It is affecting anything kids are involved in. I have heard comments from other people involved with youth in different organizations that the parents don't want to be involved. They drop their kids off & pick them up and that's the extent of their involvement. It seems to be a societal thing. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

What do you think of this? Warning: We Discriminate

An ats gum banz, yinz That would be a no to all the "do you" questions. And yes they have seen me praying. They know I pray. They know I don't tolerate taking the Lord's name in vain. They know I don't tolerate vulgarity. Where ya going with this, pack? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
I don't lie Merlyn.

- whether public schools shoudl teach evolution is just a bunch of horse puckey? If public schools teach the theory of evolution they should be allowed to teach creationism, too. But that isn't the case because of the supposed separation of church & state. - whether the government should own religious groups? Trick question since chartering a BSA unit is "owning" the unit. And actually, the BSA isn't a religious group. So based on that, no the government shouldn't own religious groups. - whether taxpayers should fund facilities that are open to all except gay people? Another trick question. But since the BSA isn't a facility, I have to question what taxpayer funded facilities are not open to gay people? It's a little slow here today, too. First off, Pittsburgh is spelled with a h. As to the way I act - let's see- I'm honest, hard working, don't have the "If no one get hurt it's OK" attitude, care about my fellow man, say prayers at the beginning & end of each day. There's probably more. That help? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
Hmmm... Ed grade school history really doesn't get much more remedial than this, but didn't they actually flee people like you, who believed it was just fine to legislate a specific religion, the "beliefs" of a specifc sect, upon everyone else? I don't feel it's fine to legislate a specific religion. I have never posted that. I have never inferred that. What is fine is allowing the freedom OF religion not the freedom FROM religion. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
