  1. If we are gonna agree that all leaders don't have the same ability or knowledge then we must also agree not all boys have the same ability or knowledge. And if that is true, then there will be those boys who will not earn 1st Class in 12-18 months. Not all boys can swim & this seems to be a big reason why some don't advance! I know someone posted once that it has been proved that boys who earn 1st Class in 12-18 months stay in Scouting at a higher rate than those who don't. Well, I'm from Missouri so show me the numbers! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  2. The Scoutmaster Fundamental course my district runs places adults into patrols. When I took Wood Badge, I was placed in a patrol. Hmmm. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  3. I agree with Hunt. An adult patrol functioning as a Scout patrol can & should be a good example for the Scouts. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  4. You disagree with every point I made? Looking forward to your reasons since most of the points & listed are more suggested program methods than requirements. But I will wait to see what others say. And #10 would go with #12 reason I listed. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  5. The program is perfectlt workable while staying within all the rules, so why do some 'leaders' choose to knowingly violate them, and why do some find themselves wrestling with how to lead without breaking rules when nothing in the program requires any rules to be broken? If the program was perfect, it would never change! And herein lies the rub. Not everything in all the BSA publications are rules! There are suggestions & guidelines that some leaders interpret as rules because they are in a BSA publication! First Class First Year is a perfect example of a suggestion that some have interpreted as "If you don't do FCFY you aren't Scouting"! We need to follow the rules. We also need to know the difference between a rule & a suggestion. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  6. #6 - While the monthly themes are a good guideline, a patrol has the flexibility to change those themes or use their own themes. #8 - Good goal but First Class First Year is in no way a required program. #11 - I'm making the assumption this include all other POR's except JASM. If so, the PL is elected by his patrol (page22 BS Handbook). #12 - If a troop decides to hold annual elections, they are penalized. (If my assumption about #11 is accurate, then #12 is redundant.) #13 - Not all Scout need a POR. #18 - If Scouts only lead the troop, where are the adults? I am all for "boy led" but there are times Troop meetings are adult led. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  7. I like all but 6, 8, 11, 12, 13, 18. 3 & 16 are redundant. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  8. No. I think you better read that part of the Bible again. And that's a poor analogy. The BSA isn't God. Maybe I should re-phrase the question? What part of achieving the goal and keeping the group together requires following all the rules and guidelines? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  9. I love English lessons! Lighten up folks! I though that was an ingenious way to describe a situation! uz2bnowl, How did the committee meeting go? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  10. No one is saying it is impossible to do. What part of achieving the goal and keeping the group together requires following all the rules? We should be here for the boys. If we aren't then we are here for the wrong reason. If we are here to make sure everyone dots all their i's & crosses all their t's, then we are here for the wrong reason. We should be here for the boys. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  11. Nothing to do. Unfounded accusations! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  12. Kids today are way over scheduled. When I was a kid the only thing that was scheduled was school & baseball practice! When I left the house after dinner my dad would yell out "be home when the street lights come on". We would play ball, ride our bikes, go swimming, etc. None of it scheduled! It seems today if it isn't scheduled, kids don't know what to do! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  13. But they clearly didn't. There was no competitive bidding for the BSA lease. And there was competitive bidding for the GSUSA & other similar leases that whitewater posted about? And I've said before how the BSA dishonestly says it's a religious organization when it's convenient, and NOT a religious organization when it's inconvenient. You rip on the BSA for doing the exact same thing you endorse the ACLU for doing! You are a poor misguided soul. I will continue to pray for you! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  14. Technology has enable us to find more information faster than ever before. Scouting web sites, forums like these, etc. are a great value! All this technology needs to be used wisely. It can't replace a weekend in the woods learning how to build fires & burn water! What it can do is help plan & facilitate that weekend in the woods! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  15. Merlyn, No I never tried to justify them. whitewater was the one who posted other groups got the same deal the BSA did not me. You are the one who is attacking the BSA because they apparently got the same deal the same way as other groups yet you will not do anything about those other groups leases! Sounds like selective persecution to me! It will be overturned. It's only a matter of time. Then you will have to find another inane reason to attack the BSA. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10(This message has been edited by evmori)
  16. If a Star Scout wants to start researching ideas for his Eagle project let him! Why squelch his enthusiasm? We can get all technical & literal about what "working on" means but what's the point. If a Star Scout has the initiative to start thinking about or researching what he wants to do for his Eagle project we should let him. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  17. Excellent post Eamonn! I completely agree. We (adults) are here for the kids not ourselves. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  18. Not what I meant. What I meant was good leaders were good followers before they were leaders. They listened & learned. They followed. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  19. The humor impaired are back! I got a chuckle! I liked the Canadian ones!
  20. I'm not the one who is persecuting the BSA because they got a sweet deal! Other groups apparently have the same sweet deal & you don't seem to care. Why? Because your only interest is in the destruction of the BSA. It ain't gonna happen. The Balboa Park ruling will be overturned & then you will have to focus on another way to attack the BSA! An no it's not the same! If the city of San Diego wants to let the BSA reserve the area for the entire summer then that is their prerogative! I'm sure if Firesign Theater wants to rent the area for the months of October, November and December, I'm sure the city of San Diego would be willing to reserve it for them! Keep spinning! Eventually you will get dizzy & fall down! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  21. I've experienced bad behavior from all walks of life. It can happen in the best of families and the worst of families. The common denominator isn't income. It's the parents. What bothers me is leaders who tolerate disrespectful behavior for any reason. There is no reason for a Scout to disrespect a leader. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  22. Some units are happy they have enough warm bodies as leaders. Some leaders are born. Others need development. We all don't lead the same way. And I know this isn't in any BSA book or manual but good leaders were good followers. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
