  1. Self Reliance is very important. Right up there with being prepared. We supply our Scouts with tents. They are responsible for taking care of it on campouts & making sure it is in condition to be used again. By that I mean no rips, all zippers work smoothly, clean. After a camping trip, on Scout per tent will take the tent home & make sure everything is in order. If it's wet, it is their responsibility to return it dry. We feel this teaches them how to take care of things that aren't yours. Trustworthy. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  2. I suspect that it is also the prevailing opinion (or for those of you who might be offended by that, the prevailing belief) within the BSA that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. That is not a belief that I share. And in my opinion, Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 (This message has been edited by a staff member.)
  3. You should be getting a new membership card each year. They come with the charter! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  4. Scouting doesn't need to be done in a uniform. Scouting is a way of doing something and can be done in jeans and a t-shirt just as well as in a uniform. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  5. Actually, Bob White is right on the money. The list on pgs 224-225 of the Boy Scout Handbook are the best to use. And electronics are not mentioned. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  6. CA, I'm with you are the "round file". And maybe tell Mr. Jones thanks!(This message has been edited by evmori)
  7. madkins007, National based their statement on data they complied & analyzed. I have asked here and other places to see the numbers to back up the statement: The First Class Emphasis increases the tenure of new Scouts by focusing on each Scout and his personal advancement needs. I have yet to see any statistics. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  8. Good luck, Trevorum! Yeah, digital rules!
  9. We actually encourage the Scouts to bring their chairs to summer camp. And the adults bring theirs, too. Beats sitting on those picnic tables all the time! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  10. This is actually the 2nd time in a month for me. A U-Haul truck ended up in my back yard about a month ago. I'm still fighting the insurance company on that! I've lived in my house for 25 years and these are the 1st instances like this! Go figure! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  11. Cause it usually rains when we go camping! Is that a good reaosn?
  12. Ahh the "List"! What to bring! What not to bring! A mind-bender! If it isn't a necessity, leave it home. If you aren't sure, ask. As a side note, we always tell the Scouts to pack rain gear. A poncho is small & lightweight. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  13. Ouch! Well a car ended up in my backyard around 12:30 AM this morning! Drunk driver. Did damage to my timber wall. Driver was taken to jail! This should be an insurance nightmare cause the police weren't sure he had any! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  14. I'll bet we have all had kids like this in our Troops. What do we do with them? How about giving them something to be responsible for. They could be responsible for all the tent pegs for their patrol or something similar. That way, they might focus more & get past this stage. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  15. I gotta agree with Hunt! I know the BSA has stated that Scouts who achieve 1st Class in the 1st year stick with the program longer than those who don't (still haven't seen any numbers to validate that). And I think someone posted that the sons of leaders stay in the program longer (no numbers here, either). So why hasn't the BSA developed SOLE (Sons of Leaders Emphasis)? Boys will stay in Scouting if they are having a good time regardless of when they earn 1st Class. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  16. JD, I've taken you about as far as I can. My knowledge of Buddhism is very limited. Sorry. Maybe someone else can help out. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  17. This type of on-line training is great! But I think for YPT, it should be done in a group initially & then be able to be renewed on-line. The advantage of a group session is the exchange of ideas between leaders. I have facilitated YPT at the summer camp we attend & the discussions are fantastic! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  18. Good advice all around. I would take Semper's suggestion one step further & mention to the campmaster your thoughts. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  19. FB, It could be your truths are different from mine therefore your interpretation of my truths is different. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  20. JD, Buddhists believe in a higher authority whereas atheists don't.
  21. Trevorum, I know we have had this discussion before & I really don't feel like having it again but the BSA recognizes Buddhism as a religion so it fits the mold. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  22. No atheists - that's a good thing! Allowing homosexuals - not a good thing. What I meant in my prior post was allowing atheists was a bad thing. I would like to see all Scouts professing duty to God, but professing duty to Allah or Buddha is fine. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10(This message has been edited by evmori)
  23. Camp Chef makes a 2 & 3 burner propane stove. We have a 2 burner in our Troop & love it. The summer camp we attend has the 3 burner and they work great! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
