House passes power to ban flag burning - On to Senate
evmori replied to johndaigler's topic in Issues & Politics
I'm still trying to figure out what burning a flag has to do with freedom of speech? -
Well you aren't allowed to listen to your Walkman in church or class because it isn't the appropriate place to listen to your Walkman. And in my opinion, listening to your Walkman on a camping trip isn't appropriate. Sure there is time for fun. There is also learning time. Tell me, listening to your Walkman on a camping trip supports which Method of Scouting? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Is Boy Scouting Too Loosey-Goosey?

Our CO gives us a place to meet & store our gear. We get some time during the church service on Scout Sunday to present the charter & that's about the extent of the involvement of our CO. And I would bet that is the extent of most CO's involvement(with the exception of LDS units). Our leaders come from the parents of Scouts in the Troop & they are recruited by the existing Troop leadership. And I would bet this is the case in most units. Does out CO understand their responsibility? Doubt it. Do most? I doubt it. Is this a bad thing? Not necessarily! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
At our summer camp, you see single Scouts & leaders roaming around all the time. Should we follow the buddy system? Yep. Is it always possible at summer camp? No. There are times Scouts go their different ways because of scheduling & have no one to go with them. I know when we as leaders go out to check with the MB counselors, we go our own way. And I really don't see anything wrong with this. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Isn't the SE sort of like the CEO of a company? And doesn't the CEO get the credit when the company is doing good & the grief when the company is doing poorly? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

I'll answer the question as it was posed. The purpose of a portable device is you can take it from place to place & have the ability to use it. That's the purpose. If you're not allowed to take it with you that doesn't take away the portability of the device. It's still portable. It will always be portable unless you nail it to your wall. Whoever said that you can listen to your walkman when you get home is wrong because a walkman is portable and banning it defeats the purpose of its portability. What's the purpose of having a portable device if you are forbidden to take it with you?

Right on the money, Dan! It is everyone's responsibility to ensure a healthy unit. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
"Well shucks Tommy Tenderfoot, why don't you just listen to nature? You can listen to your Walkman when you get home."

If the people at the top of an organization are acting in a dishonest fashion, it will affect the entire organization. No kids couldn't care less what a council exec does! But mom & dad do! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

The sad part of the whole thing is this could affect councils that are on the up & up. A black eye for one council effects the entire country. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Personal snacks usually end up in the Scout's tent where a cobbler or s'mores don't. Plus, making a cobbler & s'mores is a learning experience. Personal snacks is popping a can of Pringles. Why would a kid need a Gameboy on a campout - family or Scout? Why would a kid need a Walkman on a campout - family or Scout? If the answer is because they might get bored then maybe better planning is needed. Take a walk. See what you can find in the woods. Learn how to gather wood for a fire. Enjoy your surroundings! I think the problem come down to the lack of required training. All adult leader who be required to attend training for their position in the Troop/Pack/Crew. And should that position change, they should be required to attend the training for that position. No patches issued without training certification. While this won't solve all the problems, it would help minimize most of them. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
If you are aware a Scout has an emotional disorder, then the rest of the adult leadership need to know this. If the adults are unaware of a condition a Scout has there is no way they will be able to deal with it. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

For the Eagle rank, a Scout can only use either swimming or hiking or cycling as Eagle required not all three as Eagle required. For Star a Scout can count swimming and for Life a Scout can count hiking. When it's time to fill out the Eagle application, the Scout needs to decide which one will be counted as required and which one will be counter as optional. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

A Scout can count Lifesaving as Eagle required for Star an EP as Eagle required for Life but only one or the other for Eagle. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

pack, It's like lightening striking twice! Lived in my house for 25 years & these are the 1st instances like this! The best thing is I get a new wall which I needed! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

These questions are up to the MB counselor. I would count the days since the Scout has been in the Troop for camping since there is no wording to restrict it. As for 9b, as long as the trip you took with day packs was counted as part of 9a, then I would count it. But then again, these are my interpretations. It is up to the MB counselor the Scout is being counseled by. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

While cutting back on the resolution saves space it also results in not as good pictures. I think the best thing is to have 2-3 128mb memory cards handy. This gives you room for lots of pictures. Another idea is at the end of each day, go through all the shot you took that day & delete the lousy ones. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

While I agree with Kudu about mission statements being more PR than anything, helping boys make ethical choices is a good thing. One poster feels if we need a list of banned items, then we have failed to meet the mission statement. However, by having a list of "what to bring" and "what not to bring" items does help boys make ethical decisions. They know if it's on the "what not to bring" list & they do bring it there are consequences for their actions which helps fulfill the mission statement. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
