  1. Nice word for spin, Merlyn. It's OK for you & the ACLU to say the BSA discriminates against atheists but it's not OK for the BSA to have a membership requirement that requires belief in God? And that violates what part of the 1st Amendment? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  2. Beav, If I disagreed with the fence post, yes I would. OGE, I'll argue with anyone not just Bob. Try me! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  3. I never heard of this before? So I Googled it. Wonderful thing Google! I really don't want anyone to take this the wrong way but it seems to me like this disorder is more a parenting issue than a medical issue. From what I read, the therapy results are inconclusive & so are the medical results. Please don't take this post the wrong way. I'm just trying to understand the difference between ODD and a defiant child. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  4. I have never posted the volunteers weren't at fault. It just isn't always their fault. The BSA isn't perfect like some think. If it was, why have changes been made & things removed? When a unit starts falling apart, every aspect needs to be looked at. Just blaming it on the volunteers not delivering the program is not always the reason. And I don't remember posting we expect to lose 50% of our new Scouts each year. I know last year we didn't. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  5. Merlyn, The only thing (beside giving birth) that I am incapable of is understanding your logic. The BSA doesn't exclude atheists. Atheists don't meet the membership requirements of the BSA. Neither do girls! And once again, there ya go telling the poster he/she is either stupid or incapable. Good tactic! To bad it doesn't work. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 peter 4:10
  6. I am so glad that you asked that question. The Boy Scout Handbook, pages 12-13, and 23. Pages 12-13 address the uniform & what it's parts are and encourage it's wear. Nothing about a Troop deciding not to wear it. Page 23 is about the National Honor Patrol Award. An optional award patrols can earn. It mentions wearing the full uniform correctly but only 75% of the patrol must do this. Nothing about a Troop deciding not to wear it. The Scoutmaster Handbook page 9, 37,45,54,62. Page 9 has a section about the uniform method. Nothing about a Troop deciding not to wear it. Pages 37, 45, 54, 62 are all Troop Meeting Plan Outlines for specific themes and all say "Hold a uniform inspection." Nothing about a Troop deciding not to wear it. If I'm not mistaken, these Troop Meeting Plans are guidelines, not hard & fast rules. I don't have the other publications mentioned handy but I would bet I would find the same thing. Next! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  7. I've always been a Johnny Storm fan. There's a time to be serious. Actually I would rather someone take me to lunch than to seriously. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  8. Once again Merlyn, horse puckey! There is no 1st Amendment violation here! "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion," You agreed this isn't happening. "or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;" Not being done. "or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press;" Nothing here. "or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." Nothing here! And those religious leaders????? One is a former minister. That's like being an ex-smoker! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  9. I am saying that it is not permissable for a unit to codify "we don't do uniforms". That is NOT a unit option. And it says that in what BSA publication on what page? I do love the uniform & I do wear it. I also encourage it be worn. But you can't force someone to wear something that isn't required. Plus, there are more important things in Scouting than clothing. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  10. I'm not saying that the program never changes or won't again in the future. But you don't think the program is ever at fault. You have expressed across many threads the problem is always the volunteer leaders. Never the program or the BSA in general. Not very realistic. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  11. Hey! Hands off the Slim Jim's! Next thing ya know you'll be trying to confiscate my 18" sheath knife! Looks like the humor impaired are here! "Twin Son's of Different Mothers" was a great album by Dan Fogelberg.
  12. Good point FScouter. But since the uniform isn't required, each unit has the option to wear or not wear it. And just because drockstur's unit has made the decision to dress like they have doesn't mean they aren't following the other methods. Talk about reading into things! Geesh! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  13. Horse puckey Merlyn! Funding a BSA event is not establishing a religion! That is the most outrageous stretch of the 1st Amendment I have ever heard! And it will be overturned. So how do you like your crow, fried or grilled? ACLU = American Cash Lover's Union Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10(This message has been edited by evmori)
  14. Class B was defined by the poster. Class A was not. Interesting idea. And since the uniform isn't required ....... Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  15. I think a sense of humor should be required by all adult leaders. After all, we are in charge of kids & anything can happen! One more thing. Hot dogs are banned! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10(This message has been edited by evmori)
  16. The best thing you can do is use this Troop as a "bad" example of how your unit should never do things. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  17. Student, Purpose Driven Scouting? What a great idea! I love the Purpose Driven Life! Great book! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  18. I actually think the reason we lose kids is because they are over scheduled & Scouting is taking a back seat. We have the same problem with volunteers. The numbers are down there, too. And if the kids are over scheduled the parents are over scheduled. All the training & proper use of the program isn't going to change that. Actually, it will probably add something else to the already over scheduled kids & parents. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  19. I'll take that as a "no". It isn't always up to the kids. The parents make a lot of the decisions especially for the younger ones. And it is very possible that they want their kids in band & soccer & dance more than they want them in Scouts. Not because they are more fun. Maybe because they require less commitment from the parents. They can drop the kids off & pick them up & not be asked to help out! Possible! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  20. Sounds like a great service project but fundraiser?????
  21. When we are at summer camp, we are inspected by the camp commissioner staff three times during the week. Our SPL inspects tents daily to make sure they are neat. Remember, a Scout is clean. I don't think there should be rewards for meeting a point of the Scout Law. Maybe there should be consequences for not meeting it. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  22. Has anyone taken into consideration that kids are over scheduled & Scouting is the activity that is dropped? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  23. OK the BSA can kick me out if I complain the SE is padding membership numbers so he/she can get that big bonus. Would I still do it? In a heartbeat. Why? Because I have ethics & morals. In addition, if I were to teach the Scouts in my Troop & the children in my family to make ethical & moral decisions not doing anything would be wrong. In addition, if the BSA did kick me out because I complained the SE is padding membership numbers so he/she can get that big bonus would I fight to get my membership back? Yes, I would. Moreover, if the ONLY reason I was kicked out was that I blew the whistle, I will bet I would get my membership back. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  24. ronvo, I feel people are over scheduled. Too many committments & not enough time to do them all. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  25. Well, off hand, I would have to say that ammendments 10, 13, 19, and 26 probably have little or nothing to do with protecting 'you' specifically. As far as what ones protect people from you...the freedom of association comes to mind rather quickly. OK I'll go along with the list with maybe except 19. Protects against discrimination. How does the freedom of association protect people from me? Innocent until proved guilty? We are guaranteed In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense. There is no presumption one is innocent until proved guilty. And we could "What if ......" forever on everything! Pointless. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10(This message has been edited by evmori)
