BSA policies vs. membership: where's the proof?
evmori replied to fgoodwin's topic in Issues & Politics
I'm not sure about my council, but I know the recruitment numbers in my district are down. So actually it could be a mixture of retention & recruitment! OGE, No problem! Honest mistake. No apology necessary. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
BSA policies vs. membership: where's the proof?
evmori replied to fgoodwin's topic in Issues & Politics
Actually, OGE. The adults in our Troop are members of the Bass Hole Patrol. And not for the reason you think. I don't have any facts, but I don't feel membership numbers are down because of the gay & atheist policies. I have a feeling this is a cyclical thing like back in the 60's & 70's. Membership numbers were down then and they made a rebound. And they will rebound again! I think people use the gay & atheist policies as an excuse to not join but I don't think those are the real reasons. I'm not sure what the reasons are, though. Just my thoughts. From what I have read on National's web site, Scout units have permission to use the logos & words copyrighted by National as long as it is used according to policy. If not used according to policy, then approval from National is required. At least that's the impression I get from the web site. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

OK! I would like to apologize to the entire forum for my un-Scoutlike posts. I know I have taken my shots a Bob. Some were in retaliation. Some weren't. Either way they were wrong & for that I apologize. I will try to stop posting this way & focus more on the topics in the forums. I am truly sorry. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

My point was not another press release is needed. My point is this subcommittee might not exist any longer if this issue has been resolved. So posting a 3 year old link without knowing if it is relevant makes no sense. Those are my points. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

BSA policies vs. membership: where's the proof?
evmori replied to fgoodwin's topic in Issues & Politics
I'm sure the previous post has some relevance to this thread but what is the relevance other than to tell someone they are wrong? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
Does this subcommittee still exist? This resolution was from 2002 & if I'm not mistaken, these issues have been resolved. So what's the point of posting a 3 year old link? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Semper, Does your Troop use any tracking software? We use Troopmaster & we do track partials. Great resource & it helps keep all advancement organized. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

I would like to address this "Enter one's home" metaphor. I don't think that is an accurate comparison. Why? Well, one's home is a private residence where the owner sets the rules. Sort of like the BSA. The big difference is the the owner of a private residence is an individual not an organization. Therefore, the metaphor ends there. A better metaphor would be comparing the BSA to a religious denomination. There are many more similarities. Now one can join a religious denomination & not agree with everything the religious denomination does. And if one doesn't agree, they are not kicked out. Now if they violate one of the tenants of this denomination, there is a chance they will be reprimanded & even kicked out. But if they are voicing their opinion, they probably won't be. After all, this is the USA not the USSR. The BSA is very similar. A private organization with membership requirements. If someone violates one of the tenants of the BSA, they can be reprimanded, even removed from membership. To me, this seems to be a better metaphor than one's house. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Anchors & sail! Cruise ship metaphor! Could we switch to tanks & trucks!! I'm getting sea sick! We will go round & round & round & round and end up in the same place. Some posters perceive themselves as always being correct & those that don't agree with them are wrong. C'mon Bob! Share! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

madkins, I don't think you were out of line. You made the statement & there were those who didn't comply. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 (This message has been edited by a staff member.)

I think this probably happens a lot. If the SM is assigning only in Troop MB counselors, then maybe suggesting to him to assign a few outside the Troop might work. And you could do a little research up front by finding a few outside the Troop who would be willing to counsel the Scouts in your Troop. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Retaining sails and dropping anchors
evmori replied to CNYScouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Thanks for your insight FScouter. However, my question wasn't answered. I agree that SM Conferences & BOR's should not be delayed. But let's remember something - we are all human & sometimes things happen! In a perfect world, a SM Conference or BOR would never be delayed & we would all be shopping at Walgreens! But this isn't a perfect world. Mistakes will be made by everyone not just the adult leadership of a unit. Believe it or not, parents are not always right! And sails can be created. Just like anchors can be created. To think otherwise is being close-minded. Thanks for listening! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
Bob, Never said I don't like you. I don't even know you. Not always agreeing with you isn't the same as not liking you! Heck, I don't always agree with my wife & I love her! I think Ed's post speak for themselves so I won't comment on them, it's just not a fair match-up. You gotta explain this one, Bob. And not in a PM - publicly. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

I've participated in problem solving courses & have been part of many problem solving teams. One of the main elements in problem solving is to determine if the problem is perceived or real. One of the techniques used to determine this is brainstorming causes. That is what these forums basically are. Brainstorming sessions. Maybe the folks at National need a few brainstorming sessions! No one has questioned "should we be". The point I was making is that you cannot always be all points at once. That they are not always compatable. Sometimes you must choose which serves the greatest good in the situation you are in. Ethical decision making. Bob, Do you have an example of this? I've been truing to think of one but for the life of me I can't come up with one! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Retaining sails and dropping anchors
evmori replied to CNYScouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Let's see. Who earns ranks & merit badges? The Scout or the Scout's parents? Wait I know the answer! The Scout! So if the Scout needs a SM Conference or BOR who should be asking for/about it - the Scout or the Scout's parents? I know another answer! The Scout. It might not be written in any BSA manual or handbook but nowhere does it state a SM Conference or BOR is between the Scout, parents & SM or BOR. It is between the SM/BOR & the Scout. And why when these type of problems occur there are those who feel the problem is always with the leader and never the parent? It is possible, very possible, the parent is the one at fault! You're welcome, Bob. Glad I could return so soon. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -

Opinion as fact again! Delaying the SM conference might not have been the best course of action, but the dad blowing up like he did wasn't the best course of action, either. The Scout is the one who should be requesting SM conferences, not dad or mom. After all it is the Scout's rank, isn't it? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
FB, I don't remember the source for my quote. It's one I learned a long time ago that stuck with me. What it says to me is God didn't create man just to give Him something to do. He created man because He wanted to. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

"The whole world's watching, the whole world's watching, the whole world's watching, the whole world's watching ..." "And if they lock us up they lock us up and God give us the strength to keep going. Let's go." From the debut album by Chicago Transit Authority. The song is Someday. Excellent album! 1st off, the examples in the original post are suspect. Being un-scoutlike if you refuse to lie because your boss want you to? A Scout is trustworthy. I won't even address the absurdity of the thief or mugger thing. When is behavior un-Scoutlike? Good question and one which can only be answered on a case by case basis. If my boss asked me to lie or fudge numbers I would politely refuse to do so since this is dishonest. Doing so would be un-Scoutlike. I don't think anyone is making the BSA to be a monster. Some do make the BSA out to be infallible. All people are doing is asking questions & requesting posters to state facts instead of their opinion. Asking questions isn't attacking. Asking questions is a common form of gathering information. If you don't know something - ask. If something doesn't make sense - ask. If you are unsure of something - ask. We have all been impolite. So outright arrogant! And we have all been un-Scoutlike in our responses. Does that make us less of a Scouter? No. It makes us human. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
