I've often heard it mentioned here about "passing" and "failing" ranks. At the same time, I've heard that the "Scoutmaster Conference" is just a conference -- and it "has" to be signed off when they meet and have the conference, and no SM can ever refuse (or should refuse) a conference. The Scoutmaster Conference is a "participate in" requirement. Participate in a Scoutmaster conference. Other requirements are different. Demonstrate how to display, raise, lower, and fold the American flag. Earn 6 merit badges, including 4 from the required list for Eagle. These type of requirements require the Scout to "do" something. The Scoutmaster Conference is nothing but a chat with the Scoutmaster and once that happens, requirement complete.

If everyone is separated by gender and age it sounds like the only reason this is being done is cost. Poor idea.

I agree with all but #3, jr56. A SMC is nothing more than a chat with the Scout and it is not a pass/fail requirement.

This is one of the courses that should not be on-line. This is better in person as the interaction with others is more important than just "passing" the course.

I have a Facebook site and I don't care who reads it. There is nothing there I am embarrassed about! And those people I have as friends are friends in one way or another. If a Scout or anyone has a Facebook page and doesn't think people will read it is sorely mistaken. It is a public forum.

We can assume anything we want, Merlyn. If this young man didn't want people to know about his sexual orientation, why did he put it on Facebook? Why did he blab it all over the press. Heck, if this was someone stating the BSA is a religious organization on his Facebook page you would claim it's fact, Merlyn!

Lisa, Yes I use Facebook. Why? In the eyes of the law he is a minor, but he is not a child.

As to the FB page - Nick, people should NOT be trolling for some kid's page. That's creepy. I agree with NJCubScouter that we need to safeguard this boy's privacy, too. He is a child, who may have written things on FB that he didn't intend to share with the whole wide world. Hmmm.... If he doesn't want the world to see things he has written, he shouldn't post them were the world can see them. And at 16, he isn't a child.

Why wouldn't Cub Scouts qualify for a DC to apply EDGE? Because a Cub Scout doesn't meet the rank part of the requirement. This is meant for a Boy Scout to teach another Boy Scout and the key is using the fancy new EDGE (same stuff different name) not the result.

How do you break parents out of the Cub mode? Tell them it is up to their son to be the initiator not the parents and unless their son asks, nothing will be done. And stick to it.
