1st off, ya need to get your terminology correct! (A)square - A plane figure having four equal sides. (B)rectangle - A four-sided plane figure with four right angles or a parallelogram with four right angles. ©parallelogram - A four-sided plane figure with opposite sides parallel. A=B and B=C and A=C A square is a rectangle. A square is a parallelogram. A rectangle is a parallelogram. Validity proven. And just because something isn't valid IN ALL CASES doesn't invalidate it. Ed you ARE a unit commissioner, and part of your responsibility is to help those units with this very problem, are you saying that NOTHING you do will help because the rest of the world isn't perfect? This ain't McDonald's. There ain't no McScouts! The membership card I get is from the BSA, not my CO or district or council. Actually my CO or district or council appear nowhere on the card. Hold on let me make sure - (rummaging through wallet) - nope none of those appear on the card. Just says I'm a member of the Boy Scouts of America Troop 0001 Pittsburgh, PA. It also says I am entitled to all the rights & privileges. So A=B and B=C. Therefore A=C. Even franchises have to follow corporate rules & regs & the employees of those franchises have to follow the same rules & regs so A=B & B=C so A=C does apply! UC's are sorta like the link between your district & your unit. They are the people who the unit can go to with questions, concerns, etc. UC's are also to help their units with rechartering & recruitment. Now all this depends on each unit having a UC which doesn't always happen. In a perfect world, each unit would have a UC, each CO would really care about the unit(s) it charters & we would all live at Walgreen's! But this isn't a perfect world. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

OGE, I have been asked questions about these situations (not osawippee). They have come in the form of "Hey did your hear about yada yada yada? What do you think? I always answer the best I can which considering the amount of actual factual information I have isn't very good & usually ends up being my opinion. From the reactions I have gotten, that's not what people wanted to hear. So maybe I should use the line "If the BSA did it, it must be right." Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Where did the information you posted come from? Not enough leadership? Interesting. Was the 6 months this Scout was a den chief after he earned his Star rank? If so, the leadership requirement has been met. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

So if I belong to my council & my council belongs to the BSA then I belong to the BSA. Sorta like A=B & B=C therefore A=C. I like math! We as volunteers are the ones people see as the BSA, not National. We are the one who will be asked questions, not National. All the front-line volunteers want to know is all the facts. If the BSA can't give them out because of some legal reason, then just say so. I wouldn't like it but I can live with it. But if they aren't giving the front-line volunteers all the info because they just don't want to, then that's just plain wrong. National wants our loyalty & wants us to live according to the Oath & Law but doesn't practice what they preach. And we do have a right to know the facts. After all, we are dues paying members. Since this IS America we ARE allowed to associate with whom we want without retribution. So the BSA won't let atheists join. The Notre Dame club won't let USC grads join. While I agree the buddy system should be used, I don't think it is necessary to extend it to tenting. If there are an odd number of Scouts on a camping trip, then one will need to sleep in a tent alone. That's assuming the Troop doesn't have a tent big enough to hold three Scouts. And if that assumption is fact then there is nothing wrong with a Scout tenting alone. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

There is nothing in the Constitution that states the church & state are to be separate. That is an interpretation used by those who want all religion removed from anything public. knottyfox, Yup I feel that way. They knew what was coming. Maybe the warning could have come earlier. But I'll bet they were watching the Weather Channel for weeks & knew there could be a disaster & still they chose to stay. And there are some who still refuse to leave & expect to be supported! We as Americans are guaranteed the freedom of religion. That includes atheists! We all have the same rights! Nice, huh? But it seems there are some who want "their" rights which are not the same as everyone else's rights. They are over and above the rights we are guaranteed as Americans. They want the right not to hear someone pray. They don't care if the person praying is exercising their right of free speech guaranteed to all Americans. They also don't want the government or anyone else who uses our tax dollars to charter a BSA unit. Why? Because the BSA requires a belief in God. A requirement the SCOTUS ruled was legal! I'll bet if SCOTUS ruled that atheists didn't have to pay taxes there would be no complaint! As Americans, we all have the same rights. And by the government chartering as BSA unit, none of those rights are being violated. The only thing being violated is the "their" rights which don't exist anyway! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

on what grounds do you disallow retirement benefits to Smith? At the time he took retirement he had no charges against him! It does seem that at the time of his retirement there were no charges files. But one could make the argument that his crimes were committed prior to retirement so his retirement benefits should be disallowed. We still don't have all the facts! ED, I did not refer to the Constitution did I? I was referring to the judicial principle widely to know to MOST people If I'm not mistaken, the judicial principle you refer to is based on the Constitutional right of a fair & speedy trial & to be judged by a jury of ones peers. Ever hear of innocent till proven guilty If you are referring to the Constitution, there is no such right. We are guaranteed a fair & speedy trial and to be judged by a jury of our peers but nothing in the Constitution states "innocent until proven guilty". Back to Oprah.
