For once, I agree with Merlyn. This is the forum for these type of topics & the debate & discussion can get heated! If you don't like the heat get out of the forum! There is a strange chill coming from beneath my feet. Could it be .....................................................? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
Ah yes but if I only want onions & pickles on my burger at Wendy's that's all I get. You can't get something they don't have. Every unit is unique. Sure we all have the same basic structure but that's probably where the similarity ends. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Not every part of the BSA program is etched in stone. There are a lot of areas that could be defined by every unit differently & that would be OK. Tweaks! Wendy's, McDonald's & Burger King all sell hamburgers. But, they are all different. I prefer Wendy's while Eamonn might prefer McDonald's. Having a Scout Troop on every corner would be the same thing. They would all have Scouting and they could all be different. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Well sure Ed, and how good are you with a manual typewriter these days? Considering I use the "Hunt 'n Peck" method, I don't have to peck as hard these days! Still working on the "Hunt" part! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
So you agree the BSA has lied to schools? To my knowledge, the BSA hasn't lied to schools so I wouldn't agree. Have you ever considered the BSA was upfront about their membership requirements and the schools are the ones who chose to ignore them? If that's the case, it is the schools themselves who are at fault, not the BSA. Lying is wrong regardless of the reason. And lying to someone because they lied to you unethical! SR540Beaver, Excellent points! And maybe we should teach "How not to lose all but one tent stake". Seems this happens a lot! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -

I've noticed this myself. It seems if the Scouts don't use the skills they are taught, they forget! While I was SM, we instituted "Knot of the Night" at the beginning of Troop meetings. Started with a square knot & worked our way through clove hitch, 2-half hitches, taut line hitch, bowline, timber hitch, figure eight, etc. Practice made perfect (or at least helped with their memories). Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
You're right about one thing, Ed; I wouldn't want to lower my standards to the BSA's level of dishonesty. You'll notice I never stated I myself would lie (I'd make sure the BSA knew I wasn't going to follow their policy); I only said I don't think it's terribly dishonest to lie to a dishnoest organization like the BSA. Actually, Merlyn, your standards could never rise high enough. You might have never said you would lie but endorsing it is practically the same thing! To lie to someone because they lie to you shows a lack of morals. And teaching this type of behavior is reprehensible. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

I like e-mail. Not checking their home e-mail because they use it all day at work is a poor excuse and nothing more. I use it all day at work, too! Do these same people read their snail mail daily? The SM in my unit is like that. He told me if I have something important to tell him, call him because he doesn't check his e-mail everyday! Best part, he doesn't answer his phone, either! He screens his calls! Other than e-mail, a web site to strictly pass info like this to a large number of people is a good idea. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Given the way the BSA has dishonestly "changed its rules" while allowing (and even encouraging) public schools to charter BSA units, yes, I'd say it's OK to lie, because the BSA wasn't honest about its own policies. I love these type of statements! All they do is justify a persons behavior because "someone else did so why shouldn't I do it." Why? Maybe because it's wrong! If someone shoplifts a pack of gum is it OK for you to do the same thing because someone else did it? No! Basing your actions on what others do doesn't make it right! All it does is lower your standards. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

I would start by getting the UC involved. It really sounds like there is a hidden agenda somewhere. I might even start looking for a new Troop. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Jeremiah 10:2-4 2 This is what the LORD says: "Do not learn the ways of the nations or be terrified by signs in the sky, though the nations are terrified by them. 3 For the customs of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel. 4 They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter. I see nothing prohibiting a Christian from having a Christmas tree! And read on! Why do we have a decorated Christmas Tree? In the 7th century a monk from Crediton, Devonshire, went to Germany to teach the Word of God. He did many good works there, and spent much time in Thuringia, an area which was to become the cradle of the Christmas Decoration Industry. Legend has it that he used the triangular shape of the Fir Tree to describe the Holy Trinity of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The converted people began to revere the Fir tree as God's Tree, as they had previously revered the Oak. By the 12th century it was being hung, upside-down, from ceilings at Christmastime in Central Europe, as a symbol of Christianity. My religion doesn't prohibit me from participating in other religions celebrations. And I attend church almost every Sunday. I also read my bible daily & have prayer time during the week. All of which are encouraged by many denominations (Christian & non-Christian). And Christmas means "Christ's Festival". Proud Eagle, My point of bringing Christmas into this was to show that, Merlyn, as an atheist, still takes the day off. And that Christmas is a national holiday. dan, There is nothing in any BSA publication that states agnostics are not allowed to be members of the BSA. If they meet the membership requirements, why would they be kept out? An agnostic and an atheist are different. Do some research. You might learn something. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
-
Yes Merlyn I know 12/25 isn't Christs birthday. But it is the day His birthday is celebrated. And it's also a national holiday. So what are you doing to end this practice? Maybe you should get a key or figure out how to work off-site. Decorating a tree is in violation of the bible? Please site chapter & verse! And if an agnostic states he believes in God he can become a BSA member! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

dan, Where in this paragraph The Boy Scouts of America is a private membership group. As with any private organization, Boy Scouts retains the constitutional right to establish and maintain standards for membership. Anyone who supports the values of Scouting and meets these standards is welcome to join the organization. does it state agnostics can't be members or don't meet the membership requirements? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
-
Q. What allows the Boy Scouts of America to exclude atheists and agnostics from membership? A. The Boy Scouts of America is a private membership group. As with any private organization, Boy Scouts retains the constitutional right to establish and maintain standards for membership. Anyone who supports the values of Scouting and meets these standards is welcome to join the organization. The answer doesn't answer the question! It is a company line! If you knew anything about agnostics you would understand my point. There are agnostics who believe in a higher power they just have a lot of questions! Remember, the requirement is to believe in God. Not my God. And not your God, dan (had to exclude Merlyn since he is an atheist). Their God. Their higher power. Since atheists don't believe in God, they can't become members. Sorry Merlyn. So, Merlyn, you do take Christs birthday off even though you don't believe He was God! What else do you do that is contradictory? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10(This message has been edited by evmori)

Give it a rest, Merlyn! You & your ilk (yeah ilk) have been attacking i.e. persecuting the BSA since the Dale case. You lost & you're ticked! And you will try anything you can to get even! Keep trying! The only thing you will accomplish is making the BSA stronger in it's resolve to keep the values it was founded on. Caving into the likes of you won't happen! Why? Because your arguments are so skewed they are beginning to talk back to themselves! Those with no moral fiber unwind like a ball of yarn. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
