What Do You Call A Group Of Scouters?

It smacks of an attitude that women who have sex should be "punished". In your opinion. Not mine. Consequences and punishment are not always the same. Many women have taken responsibility by using birth control, which unfortunately is not 100% effective. Many women who have abortions are married women, whose pregnancies have resulted from failed birth control. So they should not be having sex? Again, they knew what could possibly happen. If they aren't ready to accept the responsibilities for their actions then maybe they shouldn't be having sex. What would be a reason for a married woman to have an abortion? Charcoal starter fluid? Make your own fire starters. Fiber egg cartons, dryer lint & candle wax. Fill each cell of the egg carton 1/2 full with dryer lint. Melt candle wax & pour in each cell so the lint is saturated. Fill each cell to the top with dryer lint & saturate again with melted candle wax. Close carton wrap in waxed paper & place in the fridge over night. You now have 1 dozen fire starters. Buy chimney's at Wal*Mart? A #10 coffee can works just as well! Light two of your homemade fire starters, place a #10 coffee can over it, fill with charcoal then place another #10 coffee can on top! Excellent chimney! And very inexpensive! Oh yeah, don't forget to remove the bottom of the coffee cans! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

I agree women should have a choice. The choice (rape & incest excluded) is to have sex or not have sex. If the choice is to have sex then the woman must be able to deal with the consequences of that choice. One of those consequences could be a child. If she isn't willing to or unable to accept the consequences of her actions then her choice should be to not have sex. My mother accepted the consequences of her actions. For me, life begins at conception. There might be some birth controls that stop this life after conception but that is still in no way the same as abortion. Most women have an abortion because having a baby will interfere with their plans. An inconvenience if you will. That is a horrendous reason to end a life. And in my opinion, an unacceptable reason. And every time I hear he/she can be put up for adoption I think of myself. I am adopted. My mother chose to not abort me. She could have. But she didn't. And even though I don't know who she is I thank her every day of my life. Birth control is not the same as abortion. Not even close. Effective birth control helps prevent abortion. And the best birth control is not having sex until you are ready to accept the consequences of your actions. Rape & incest not included. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Now you a stretching this way out of shape. Those eggs used in invetro are not lives until they are planted in the women. So life is not ended, it isn't given a chance to start. No she is not guilty of murder. The doctor who performs the abortion is. She is an accessory. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Yes Gern it is but there is another life in peril at the same time. To me it's not the same as abortion. No it wouldn't be wonderful to have such a valve regardless of who controls it! It would be a little to Orwellian to me! Thanks for clearing my ectopic misunderstanding up, Beavah! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Birth control kills nothing. It prevents pregnancy. RU whatever isn't birth control. My rational for etopic is the mother's life is also in peril. A choice needs to be made. And the choice could be to let the child live instead of the mother. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Abortion is murder. Partial birth abortion is even worse! The only difference between abortion and killing someone with a gun is abortion is a medical procedure that ends the life of a child. Imagine if your mother had chosen to abort you. The punishment for abortion should be the same as the punishment for murder since that is what it is. And there are exceptions such as etopic pregnancy. Rape & incest are not an exception. The mother can always put the baby up for adoption after the birth. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

I think what people think of retesting is Tie a bowline Show me how to splint a leg. Pitch that tent. Those are obvious. But many of the questions FScouter & OGE listed could also be considered retesting. What does 'loyal' mean to you? How do you honor the 12th point of the Scout Law? How would you avoid poison oak (poison ivy, sumac)? What does it mean to a Tenderfoot Scout to "Be Prepared"? What does it mean to say, "A Scout is Trustworthy"? What does it mean to say, "A Scout is Courteous"? What is the Outdoor Code? Why is it important? These all can be considered retesting. We all do it! There is really no way around it. Beavah, I shoulda added #3 to the grey area list. Why are these in the grey area? They are specifically asking the Scout to do something they have been signed off for ergo retesting. But a review in a sense is a retest. The BOR needs to ask questions to ensure the requirements that were signed off were actually completed. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

In my neck of the woods, sports & band are the two big competitors we have.

In my unit, the Scout starts the BOR by leading the board in the Pledge, Scout Oath & Law. He then is asked to recite the Slogan & Motto. Is this retesting? Could be. All 8 questions you listed could be construed as retesting, Beavah. 1, 2, 7 & 8 fall in that gray area while the rest are more in the retest area than the others. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

A BOR (not Eagle) should focus on where the Scout has been what he has learned to date. It should also focus on his future development & when he thinks he will be ready for his next BOR. The rest will fall into place if this is the focus of the BOR. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

What if the boy shows up for his BOR in a suit & tie? Or his school uniform?

Hmmm. We use blue cards for merit badges. When I was a SM, a Scout would complete his part of the blue card & bring it to me. We would peruse the MBC list & pick a counselor. I would then put the name address & phone # of the MBC on the blue card then date & sign the card. If the Scout went to a different counselor, he would need a new blue card. And if an completed blue card came back without my signature I would have to question the Scout as to what he learned & why he switched counselors. At that point, it would be up to me to accept or not accept the MB as complete. The only time I didn't put the name of a MBC on a blue card was when we went to summer camp. You make some valid points, OGE. The problem people who created the problem need to be dealt with. In the case of a poor MBC, the DAC should be informed. That is their job. As a SM, don't use that counselor again. In the case of sign-offs of requirements that weren't completed, this needs to be taken up with the person who signed off. In the case of a Scout not doing anything for his POR, this is a two-fold problem. 1st, the SM for not ensuring the Scout was doing his job & 2nd with the Scout for not asking the SM for help or guidance. Actually, there are several knots that represent awards that are not "earned". Silver Beaver Silver Antelope Silver Buffalo Medal of Merit Honor Medal District Award of Merit OA Distinquished Service Award If these awards aren't earned, then how does one get them? I don't remember anyone asking me if I wanted the DAM or Silver Beaver! I do remember the surprise when my name was announced in conjunction with these awards. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Page 187 of the Boy Scout handbook states the Scout gets "a signed merit badge application and name of a qualified counselor" from his SM. I can't locate my SM handbook right now but I am pretty sure it states something very similar. The MB counselor name(s) are given to the Scout by the SM. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

making the MB University a better experience

Making the MB University a better experience? Eliminate it & concept! This is not how merit badges were intended to be completed. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -

I agree a BOR is not for retesting. And just because a Scout shows up for his BOR he shouldn't automatically pass. If a Scout doesn't know when he learned a required skill and has no idea how to do it, he hasn't met the requirements for rank even if the requirement has been signed off. Longhaul, I wasn't trying to get into a Woodbadge debate. Just stating nothing like this was taught at the "old" Woodbadge & your statement reinforces it isn't taught at the 21st Century Woodbadge. I only included it since this SM has attended Woodbadge & knows how Scouting should be and wants us to do it right. A SM has no choice but to accept the signed MB cards. What I would do is report this to the DAC & never ever send another Scout to this MB counselor again. These Scouts didn't earn the Cooking MB. And that is the fault of the counselor. The merit badge was done in two, one hour sessions in a classroom, and one 4 hour "cook off" where there were a bunch of dished cooked by different scouts. The food was purchased by the MBC and given to the boys and they had to come up with what to cook. What else did the adults do that the Scout should have done? Who made the decisions on the menus? Requirements 4, 6 & 7 were not completed according to the requirements. This is subtracting from the requirements and is not allowed. It makes no difference whose idea this was. It is wrong. This is not how Scouting should be and nowhere near what is taught at Woodbadge! The Scouts who participated in the sessions didn't complete all the requirements for the cooking MB. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
Then, John, until you understand the advancement policies, you shouldn't chair or even sit on a BOR for any rank. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
