  1. The G2SS states Pointing any type of firearm (including paintball, dye, or lasers) at any individual is unauthorized. However, law enforcement departments and agencies using firearms in standard officer/agent training may use their training agenda when accompanied with appropriate safety equipment in the Law Enforcement Venturing program. So, the only part of paintball that is banned is the type where individuals shoot each other, which is the most common. Paintball target shooting isn't prohibited. And the idea the Scout came up with is a great idea! Let us know how it goes! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  2. beavah, Available & present are the same to me. Ya can't be available if ya ain't present! dan, A Troop can be boy run if an adult is teaching skills. They could be teaching the skills to the youth leadership so the youth leadership can teach it to the Troop. There are no absolutes in life other than death. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  3. Washing their feet, Ed. Washing their feet. Those who would be examples of leadership must be the servants of all. Bein' available isn't Adult Relationships. Bein' present is. Think you missed my point or you skipped But we are always available to all the Scouts & they all know this. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  4. Usually we (the adults) try to filter everything to the Troop through the SPL & ASPL. But we are always available to all the Scouts & they all know this. We do keep our area in excellent condition. Not to show off but as an example to the Scouts. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  5. Hunt, That's nothing more than an excuse not a reason! The reason - parents today are afraid their kids won't "like" them! Tough! Kids need parents who are parents, not their friends! And your kids won't like you all the time. Parenting by excuse isn't parenting. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  6. When my son was old enough to handle the power mower, he learned how to use it. So did my daughter. They also learned how to rake leaves, wash cars, clean their rooms, do the dishes, run the vacuum & a variety of other chores. Kids are coddled today. They aren't expected to do anything they don't want to do. And that is doing them a great disservice as parents. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  7. Why in the world would the BSA need the support of the ALA to continue the Reading MB? I'm a Reading MB counselor & while doing research at a library is part of the merit badge, it in no way requires the support of any organization! So let the ALA get all goofy & think Penn & Teller are the voice of America! Big deal! Let's move on to something important because this isn't. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  8. scoutldr, Here's some definitions An agent that intoxicates, especially an alcoholic beverage a drug that can produce a state of intoxication Tobacco fits neither. Totally inappropriate. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  9. I never knew there was an ALA! And thinking Penn & Teller represent mainstream USA is a little scary! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  10. How can we teach boys to avoid intoxicants such as tobacco if we are not man enough ourselves to keep clean our own bodies clean? Tobacco isn't an intoxicant. So if someone smokes they can't teach the dangers of smoking to someone who doesn't? Don't think that makes sense. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  11. It actually reads Adult leaders should support the attitude that young adults are better off without tobacco and may not allow the use of tobacco products at any BSA activity involving youth participants. All Scouting functions, meetings, and activities should be conducted on a smoke-free basis, with smoking areas located away from all participants. If the BSA wanted to ban smoking it would read Smoking tobacco on all BSA property & at all BSA function is prohibited. but they didn't. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  12. I remember reading about the BSA hiring a risk management firm. Can't remember where or when, though.
  13. I guess I just don't see it as that big a deal.
  14. Small part of the operating cost? Most important part of the cost! Ya ain't going anywhere with out it! And considering the cost of other maintenance items it's expensive when your break it down by the mile. And $3 a gallon ain't cheap considering the wholesale price is hovering around $2.15. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  15. The cost to reprint is probably minimal or would be the same as issuing updates to the existing G2SS considering there were 23 updates. Are the updates necessary? If it is truly a complete change, yes. If it is just re-wording, no. Making a change for change sake usually doesn't make sense. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10(This message has been edited by evmori)
  16. If you want to know the prices in your area, go to http://www.gasbuddy.com/. All prices posted are done by people like you & me. Extremely current & accurate. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  17. campcrafter, I only used the phrase "The only ROI that is necessary" was for your benefit. I've been an adult Scouter for 18+ years. I have never expected anything in return. I have been a parent for 20+ years and have never expected anything in return. If I do get anything in return from either I consider it a blessing! "Expecting a ROI as a parent is parenting for the parent not the child" Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  18. EDDIE, Sorry Friend - I Think You Are Wrong! If I do not insure that there is a return on the time and money I invest in my child's activities then neither he/she (fun, education, friendships, experience, adventure, whatever) nor I (a well adjusted, educated, well rounded young man/woman) get what they should from the acivity. Further it is poor parenting not to do this. IMNSHO My son played soccer, baseball, football, bowling and tried karate. What return did he get from all these? He had fun. Parenting and expecting a ROI is not parenting for the kids, it is parenting for yourself. And that's not parenting. I'm not sure what it is but it isn't parenting. Also my child may have some interests that differ from mine and I surely would not deny my child the chance to explore those interests and I still can expect a good ROI. My kids have interests that differ from mine, too. The only ROI that is necessary is they learned something & had fun. Maybe our problem here is what each of us considers to be the investment and what kind of return is expected. Nah that's not the problem. The problem is I don't expect any return. Everything - good or bad - is a learning experience. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  19. And that evaluating how my son spends a large part of his "free" time is good parenting. If you are looking to get something back for your investment then you are parenting for your benefit, not your son's. And that, my friend, is not good parenting. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  20. What I plan on suggesting is to ask the parents permission to talk to the Scouts doctor and find out what he can/can't do physically. If possible, I am leaning to letting him complete the requirements wearing a PFD if he is able. I'll keep you informed. Thanks for all the suggestions. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  21. Ain't it great when parents cover for their kids! Ain't it great when other Scouters can't see the forest for the trees. Had a similar thing happen when I was the president of boosters for my daughters basketball team so I know how you feel. It's too bad you quit & let the moronic parents think they were in the right! Good luck! I'll keep you in my prayers. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  22. Interesting idea. We don't have that in my council. I would wear my uniform! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  23. Sounds like a good topic for a Scoutmaster Minute! We are always Scouts and we should always live by the Scout Oath & Law. Even when we don't have the uniform on. We are Scouts a school, at work, at the baseball game, in line at the movies and filling up the tank with gas at the service station. What we do & what we say & how we act tell people a lot about us. If we are respectful and courteous and say thank-you and please, people get a good impression of us. If we cut people off when we are driving or don't hold the door for the elderly gentleman behind us or use poor language then people get a bad impression of us. We are always Scouts and we should always live by the Scout Oath & Law. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  24. As for me, it better get a lot better in Boy Scouts for me to stay in. A lot better? Based on your posts you seem to want more out of the program than you are willing to put into it! And that isn't going to happen any where at any time in any program. If you think it will, then you are wasting your time & should move on to something else that requires a minimum investment like watching television. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
