Here's a different version of the same story that makes a little more sense. It's from Court TV. Let's not forget this guy was convicted 4 years ago! Sounds like Merlyn's digging deep again! NEW YORK A former Scoutmaster praised for his selfless devotion to Manhattan boys admitted Tuesday sexually abusing an Eagle Scout in his troop. Jerrold Schwartz, 42, pleaded guilty to four counts of third-degree sodomy for molesting the teenager in 1996. Judge Charles Solomon told Schwartz he would face up to eight years in prison when he is sentenced in August. Schwartz was originally charged with 36 counts of sodomy over a two-year period. The victim, now a 19-year-old college student, claims he was raped by Schwartz in his office and apartment after weekly meetings for Troop 666, a group based in a church and synagogue on the Upper East Side. The abuse continued on camping trips to Colorado, New Mexico and the Florida Keys, and even occurred on the eve of Schwartz's wedding in Disneyworld, the victim alleged. The victim, the son of a doctor and lawyer who were deeply involved with the troop, is suing Schwartz, the Boy Scouts, the church and the synagogue for $150 million. According to his mother, the teenager's normal adolescence was destroyed by the abuse. In a letter to the judge, she said he engaged in self-mutilation, cocaine and marijuana abuse, and promiscuity and would spend hours in the bathtub trying to cleanse himself. He first told his parents about the molestation after he was kicked out of college and sent to a rehab center. The teenager's lawyer, Michael Dowd, said Schwartz's plea ensures he will be found liable in the civil suit. Dowd also represents more than 40 other clients who say they were sexually abused as children. The heart of the prosecution's case was secretly recorded audio tapes in which the victim confronted Schwartz about the abuse. "I took advantage of you sexually," Schwartz admitted in the April 2001 meeting. "Im eternally, eternally sorry. He blamed the abuse on "a sickness" and said, "I did things that were not becoming of an adult that you looked up to, not becoming of an adult period. Before the plea, Schwartz's lawyer, Joseph Bondy who became an Eagle Scout in Troop 666 under Schwartz's leadership said his client made the statements in fear of the victim's volatility, but acknowledged the "horrible, horrible tape" would be compelling to jurors. Schwartz was involved with Troop 666 since his own youth, becoming an Eagle Scout, then an assistant scoutmaster and finally the leader. In letters sent to Judge Solomon pleading for leniency, troop parents and scouts described Schwartz as caring and charismatic and said they could not believe the allegations. "I count him among the most dedicated and compassionate people I have had the honor to know and befriend," one Eagle Scout, now a college junior, wrote. Dowd, the victim's lawyer, said his client was living out of state and had not heard about the plea because he was busy taking his final exams. What's the money used for? Helps pay for pizza on Friday night for the Troop. A very small pizza. The Cuss Cup is a good tool to help kids realize there are consequences for their actions. They will need to make a decision. Cuss & pay or don't cuss & keep the cash. No lines of credit are allowed & we have the Cup for all Scouting activities. And we don't reward expected behavior. Following the Scout Oath & Law is the best way to go. But there are no immediate consequences for not following it. The Cuss Cup has immediate consequences & kids understand immediate consequences better. Remember, there are things they just don't get because of their age! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Ahh. If a Scout taunts another Scout in the attempt to get him to pay the Cup the taunter also owes! The Cuss Cup has worked for us. The Scouts & adults know we don't tolerate this type of language & therefore refrain from using it. Does this help them make ethical decisions? Yes it does. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

The Cuss Cup has helped us practically eliminate this type of language. A quarter might not seem like a lot but it isn't the money that's important. Apologizing in front of the Troop in no way would be hazing! In some instances it is appropriate. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

We use a "Cuss Cup". Anyone who curses or says "Oh my G**" pays the "Cup" a quarter. Adults included including visitors. So I guess you could say we have a "No Cursing" rule. I don't see that as a problem. There are lots of rules in life we must adhere to. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Scoutmaster to young Scout trying out new words: That kind of talk is offensive to a lot of people. Are you trying to portray a low-life image or yourself? Using those kinds of words shows others how limited your vocabulary is and how self-centered and offensive you can be. How about using other words to express your thoughts that are not offensive to others, get your message across, and dont diminish your good character? Yeah! That'll work! The G2SS states "Pointing any type of firearm (including paintball, dye, or lasers) at any individual is unauthorized." Definition of firearm A weapon, especially a pistol or rifle, capable of firing a projectile and using an explosive charge as a propellant. This is 2006, Merlyn. It seems decline is being driven by less Tigers! This number was down 7.7% from April 2005. Less are joining therefore driving down the totals. But it looks like the trend could be reversing. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Never said I didn't like your numbers, Merlyn. I just questioned their validity. If you compare 4/05 to 4/06 there is only a 4.3% decline. If you take into consideration there are less youth available (I think), that's not bad. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

There is something going on we don't know. Who complained? Why did this take so long? If this was only abuse & nothing else you would think the council would be more forthcoming. What POR was it? Did the SM inform the Scout of what was expected? If the answer is yes, tell mom her son knew what he was expected to do & he didn't do it! When/if he does, the situation will be re-evaluated. I'd tell the DC the same thing. Regardless what the POR was, a youth in a leadership position should be setting the example for the rest of the Troop. Being there is part of that example. If the Scout is too busy with other activities, he shouldn't accept the additional responsibility he won't have time to fulfill. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Eamonn, Excellent on the math! And that translates to a 4.3% decrease. Merlyn, No I don't. Those numbers are actually useless now. Remember they are dynamic! More power to those units chartered by public schools! But you should make sure they aren't chartered by the PTA or other group & only meet at the public school before you get all nuts about it!
