It's got nothing to do with hanky panky, Gern! It has everything to do with teaching boys to make moral & ethical decisions. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Camping badge - can we count family camping in 20 nights?
evmori replied to LauraT7's topic in Advancement Resources
The requirement does not state whether camping needs to be done with the troop or can be done with your family or other groups. Therefore, you would have to accept all camping (with troop, with family, with other groups of friends). You may not change, add or delete from any requirements. Why some scoutmasters feel they can do this is beyond comprehension. A scout is trustworthy! What kind of message does the scoutmaster send when he insists camping be done with the troop? You have to follow the rules of how the requirement is written is the bottom line & there is NO specification there. I am stating my opinion not only as a parent but as a Scout leader and Merit Badge Dean. Thank you. And since there is no specification, it's up to the counselor whether they will accept camping outside the Troop. You're Welcome! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
Yeah must be true! NOT! Common law marriage is a male & female living together. They have none of the benefits of a legally married couple. Therefore, they're doing nothing more than playing house! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
-
Wouldn't in most states a man & women who have lived as a couple for 15 years be considered a common law marriage? So what? They still aren't legally married. Can't sleep in the same tent on a Troop campout! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
-
If a man & woman are married to each other they can share a tent while on a Troop camp-out in the BSA! If they aren't married, they can't regardless of how long they have "been together". Seems pretty simple to me! Helping boys make moral & ethical decisions! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

BSA membership drops by over 400,000 in 2005
evmori replied to Merlyn_LeRoy's topic in Issues & Politics
The figures from bsa-discrimination.org don't match the figures put out by the BSA for their end-of-year 2005, which are now up on the BSA website Surprise Surprise Surprise! -

BSA membership drops by over 400,000 in 2005
evmori replied to Merlyn_LeRoy's topic in Issues & Politics
Fellows, I gotta say, with respect to the numbers, Merlyn's convincing me. What is he convincing you of, Adam? His source is questionable & he hasn't been able to validate them. The membership numbers I have as of 4/2006 are the same as what Eamonn posted. Yeah there is a decline. But the reasons given by the original poster have no basis & he refuses to believe there are other factors. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
I love Monty Python! But Monty Python isn't the real world either! You posted Where as in the "Real World" the goal has more to do with punishment, Eamonn. I just referenced it in my post. I suggest you go back & read my last post! It's only a little rabbit! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
-
Teaching boys to make ethical & moral choice can have consequences both good & bad. Consequences are the result of actions both in Scouting & the real world. Where as in the "Real World" the goal has more to do with punishment. Maybe in your world but not mine and I would guess probably not most people's real world. That's a grim view of reality. The real world is also about training & making ethical & moral decisions. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
-
Consequences aren't always bad. But if Scouting is the real world scaled down then there does need to be consequences or we are setting these boys up for failure because there are consequences in the real world. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

I'm with scoutldr. Where's the letter? And if council wouldn't show you the letter, I would flat out refuse to lends this slacker anymore of your free time! Something doesn't add up!
-
I would let this Scout know you are available if he needs any assistance & leave it at that. It is then up to him. I would do nothing else unless asked. The only thing I might to is write another letter to national & council expressing your total disdain at the situation. And send it certified mail! They have to sign for that & you might get a response. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

NY Post: BSA lawyer blames 12-year-old rape victim
evmori replied to Merlyn_LeRoy's topic in Issues & Politics
Are you really saying that a 12 year old can willing participate in sex and in giving the willing participation that the adult is not criminally culpable? No that's not what I am saying OGE. What this man (and i mean in gender only) did was reprehensible and he is criminally culpable. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
NY Post: BSA lawyer blames 12-year-old rape victim
evmori replied to Merlyn_LeRoy's topic in Issues & Politics
He might not be legally old enough to give consent but that doesn't mean he wasn't a willing participant. You have no facts to base your opinion, Merlyn! But that has never stopped you before. You're good at making a mess from nothing. You won't explain it again because you can't! The Constitution guarantees the freedom of speech & the freedom of religion. It also guarantees the government will not establish a religion. Sponsoring a BSA Troop or Pack is in no way establishing a religion! The ruling is completely flawed. How do you feel about the Presidents active support of the National Day of Prayer, Merlyn? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
new scout wants to go back to webelos?
evmori replied to Lisabob's topic in Open Discussion - Program
He shouldn't go back. Nor should he be a Den Chief. Limiting mom's attendance (unless she is a leader) is a start in the right direction. If the boy wants to take a break, let him. He might find out he misses Scouts. He might also find out he doesn't miss Scouts. Boy Scouts is very different from Webelos & it isn't for all Webelos. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
Scoutmastering in a boy run troop (was cursing)
evmori replied to Eagledad's topic in Open Discussion - Program
The objective is NOT to stop bad language. Not in the long run, but stopping bad language is the immediate objective. The objective is to instill in the boy values such that he will make his own free choice, without coercion or threat of penalty, to not use vulgar language. Being an adult leader in a Troop is a lot like being a parent only with more kids. In most families there are penalties for bad language & behavior. And the purpose is initially to stop the bad language and/or behavior & then prevent future incidents. Methods vary & some work & some don't. And not all work for all families. Same thing for Troops. The Cuss Cup works for us. You don't have to like it or use it. I'm sure there are things you do in your Troop that others think are useless or teach nothing. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
Hey campcrafter, watch your language! This site is read by young-ens!

NY Post: BSA lawyer blames 12-year-old rape victim
evmori replied to Merlyn_LeRoy's topic in Issues & Politics
Well Ed, if you think the BSA's blaming the victim is the same as the ACLU pointing out that public schools can't charter discriminatory units is "the same", I'm certainly not going to bother explaining how one is reprehensible and the other is supporting the constitution. Not what I said at all. The ACLU attacks the BSA anyway it can. They are still ticked off they lost the Dale case! And there is nothing in the Constitution that prevents a public school from chartering a BSA unit! I'm hardly pointing this out with "glee", I'm pointing out how bad the BSA has become. Have you looked at the Grand Teton council and the lawsuits they're now facing? This is more of the same. What you posted was an editorial. Do you know all the facts in this case, Merlyn? Was the sex consensual? Regardless, it's sick at best & I am not defending this mans actions. The point I am trying to make is you are posting this as 100% fact & you don't have all the facts! Sorta like your list of public schools that wasn't accurate. The purpose of you posting this here was to attack the BSA. Nothing else. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -

Do I think this is an unethical defense? Since I don't know all the facts I really can't answer that question. The only info I have read about this suit is what you posted from an editorial. My question is what is the difference between this defense & the defense the ACLU has used to attack the BSA in their cases? Nothing. Both are attacking styles. Sorta like your style, Merlyn! Attack & pay no attention to the facts! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
Scoutmastering in a boy run troop (was cursing)
evmori replied to Eagledad's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Thanks for not answering the question. Let's look at this. "Does the cup method really achieve the real objective? If the objective is to help eliminate bad language, yes. What does the boy do in a situation when there is no cup? Hopefully remember the what he learned when there is a cup. What goes through the boys mind: I want to avoid paying a quarter, or I want to keep a clean mouth and not offend others? No one can answer this honestly. I would hope the boy wouldn't want to offend others and avoid paying a quarter. There are many methods we can use. The Cuss Cup is just one. Got a question. If a Scout consistently say "Aww #@!*% what part of the Scout Oath & Law is he not keeping? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 (This message has been edited by a staff member.) -

Merlyn, What was your point in posting this article? The offender has been in jail since 1992. And he confessed Tuesday in 1992! This is a new civil suit. I'm sure any attorney for any organization that was being sued would use the same tactic! Attack the filer of the suit! Sorta like you attack people on this site who don't agree with you! You should like this approach by the BSA attorney! It's right up your alley! And will probably be as effective! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
