FB, The Constitution doesn't say a thing about the separation of church & state. It does have language about the freedom of religion, though. So are most of the boys Methodist then? No they aren't. Actually none of the current Scouts are Methodist. Presbyterian & Catholic for the most part. Does the CO prefer that you discuss specifically Methodist ideas (whatever those might be)? No. Our CO is not as involved as we would like. Does the troop have a specific religious character to it, which would be evident to people when they are looking for a troop to join in your area? Well, some people think I am a real character but other than that, no. Within 5 miles of our CO, there are 8 other Troops all chartered by churches of various denominations. What about when a boy says yes? Is that the end of the story? When the Scout says yes the next question is usually along the lines of how do you show your reverence to God? Also, I'm curious to know whether your troop's CO is a religious organization and/or whether most/all of the boys in the troop have type of some religious backgrounds? Ed, I don't know how you ask it, and don't know the relationship you have with your scouts, but I'd probably pull my boys from the troop of a SM who was confrontational about belief in God because he wouldn't be able to help them as much as someone else might. I ask "Do you believe in God?" I have a great relationship with my Scouts. How is asking a question confrontational? Sure it's not the same as "How was school?" but it's not confrontational. I do this at BOR's. And if a Scout tells me he doesn't believe in God we talk about it. And if he actually doesn't believe in God the BOR is over & the Scout doesn't advance. Religion belongs in the Churches and the daily life of the individual and should not be watered down or disturbed by school activities. Religion should not be relegated to only churches. Religion is part of society and one of our freedoms. Prayer belongs in the individual's private daily meditations and should not be disturbed by school activities or any other activity. Prayer can be private or corporate. Whenever religion becomes a public activity, it ceases to be what it was intended for and that is for the individual and that person's God. Your opinion, not a fact. Religion is a very public activity. The BSA is a private organization that has religious membership requirements. That doesn't make it a religious organization. Ya know what I love (other than God, my wife & kids)? I love it when groups want "equal" rights by stomping all over everyone else's rights. Atheists want the BSA out of public schools because they aren't allowed to be members. And excluding atheists from membership is legal according to SCOTUS. The BSA isn't a religious organization. I have had to call a parent 3 times. Once because their son stole money & goods from his tent mate, once because a Scout lied to me when asked a direct question and once when a Scout told one of my ASM's to f-off.
