  1. Well, calling the Tower of Power might get you a concert ticket, but it probably won't do any good. I would file a formal complaint with your DE, your council & national. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  2. Oh!! THAT Tower of Power!! But - They are from CA, not TX! They tour a lot!
  3. Who exactly is this "tower of power"? Here's a link with some good information. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tower_of_Power Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  4. I took Wood Badge because I wanted the best training I could get. And I got it! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  5. I received mine at our District Dinner. Others have received their beads at Roundtable. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  6. "I'm a talon you, we're the Eagles!" NE-V-120 Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  7. Tower of Power had a great horn section!
  8. Excellent point about going up the ladder sst3rd! I was in no way attacking you, Dozy. If you don't like the advice you are receiving then don't use it. Just remember, you asked. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  9. 1) Is the MB Counselor GOD? is what he/she says or does IT? Instead of our opinions, what counts is Nationals... some people here need a "Clarification of Policy" . If the answers can't be obtained, or you have an uneasy feeling about the answer you receive at your District or even your Council Level CALL TEXAS! Don't post it here, you'll get 10 different answers. Post the answer National gives you! If a registered MB counselor signs off that MB is complete, it is complete. No need to call Texas. That's a fact. 2) Who is responsible for the Scouts advancement? The Scout or the Scoutmaster? Instead of beating ME over the head with it, and calling me names, how about if you call TEXAS. You NEED a "Clarification of Policy" and when you get the answer, post it here! The Scout is the one completing the requirement to advance therefore that makes it the Scouts responsibility. The SM is responsible for making sure the resources are available for the Scout to complete the requirements to advance. Again, no need to call Texas. How do I know? Training. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  10. Ah, cajuncody, but is it a three-way left handed smoke-shifter with a hickory handle? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 "I'm a talon you, we're the Eagles!" NE-V-120
  11. CA_Scouter is right on the money. This guy is a JERK, a MORONIC JERK. If someone treated him the way he treated the JASM, who sounds like an excellent individual, he would be highly offended. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  12. Actually, Region 7 Voyageur, all Irving Berlin did was give the royalties to the BSA, not the rights to the song.
  13. SR540Beaver, I would agree. But having someone or a group do something different isn't in and of itself hazing. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 Now where did I put that left-handed flashlight?
  14. So from what I read Scott who claims he is being bullied, is the initiator and maybe Henry is retaliating? If that is correct, it sounds like Scott is a pro at doing this. Nothing worse than a blame shifter at this age. Ya gotta nip this now! This could create real problems. I would outright ask Scott in front of his parents if he did what you were told he did. He'll probably say no & then you can go into a talk about working together as a team & trustworthy & that stuff. Then I would tell everyone Scott he has used up all his "Cry Wolf" cards & the game is over. I'd bet he wanted to go home because he was afraid of getting caught! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  15. No one is being attacked! I am not saying disregard BSA policy! What I was trying to say was the Scouts in your Troop are more important than the gazillion pages of policy the BSA has. Geesh! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  16. A recent article in the paper said we can't use the word "obese"...it's too harsh and hurts their self-esteem. I agree! Let's call them what they are - FAT! Here are but a few of the things that have taken the outside world away from kids. Both parents working West Nile virus Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever Lime Disease Skin Cancer Child Molesters So, things really have changed. Excuses not reasons. Over protecting your kids is just as bad for them as not protecting them at all! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  17. We have discussed hazing in these forums & the discussion gets pretty heated! Just because someone is singled out doesn't make it hazing. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 Still looking for that left-handed shore line!
  18. the Scoutmaster is responsible for advancement. It would be irresponsible of him to let the boy go off on his own and make the wrong choices...Not all scouts are able to discern a timeline for their advancement... that's up to the SM to keep on target with....the Scout is not responsible for his own advancement, he is guided by an adult who is ultimately responsible. Ahhh no. A Scout is responsible for his advancement. After all, he is the one who is advancing, not the SM or the ASM or the AC or the CC. The Scout. Maybe, Dozy, it's time to get out of the books & into the Troop. Work with the Scouts. Teach them & learn from them. Common sense is a must! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  19. The SM supplies the Scout with the name of a MB counselor for the MB the Scout would like to complete. If the Scout has a MB counselor he would like to use & the SM agrees, then no problem. Otherwise the SM picks the MB counselor, writes his/her information on the blue card, signs the blue card & gives it to the Scout. I am the AC for our Troop and I am registered as an ASM. For us, it's not a conflict of interest. As for the other things you asked, there is nothing in the BSA rules & regs that prevents a parent from signing stuff for their son. But, if someone else is available & can sign, I would have them. When my son completed his Eagle project (I was the SM) the previous SM signed his application instead of me. I only counseled my son on 1 MB while he was in the Troop. I didn't sign any of his rank requirements. Why? Because I didn't want anyone to say "His dad signed it! I'll bet he didn't do it." Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 Happy Birthday USA
  20. If all the requirements were signed off & the Scout actually did them, he must advance. The BOR has no control over merit badges. If the Scout has blue cards for those MB's that are complete & signed by a valid MB counselor, then they are completed. If I was this Scout I would appeal. He will win. The other reasons the BOR stated are poor. Have these committee members ever been trained? Do they have a clue? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 Happy Birthday USA(This message has been edited by evmori)
  21. Lisabob refers to a separate policy regarding "God Bless my Underwear." For at least the last three editions, the Cub Scout Leader Book and the last two editions of the Cub Scout Song Book have included a prohibition on changing the words to patriotic songs. These aren't part of the "Gray Areas", per se. It's more a matter that there's a feeling that singing alternate words to certain patriotic songs is felt to be disrespectful of our country's traditions. Actually, the BSA has no control over the song "God Bless America". If a Pack wants to sing the humorous version "God Bless My Underwear" they can. The BSA doesn't own the song. Irving Berlin does. He wrote it. I have never heard of anyone complaining "God Bless my Underwear" was disrespectful to our country's traditions. This is another example of the PC crowd run amok! Bring back PADBALLS! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 Happy Birthday USA!
  22. The fundamental nature of American childhood has changed in a single generation. The unstructured outdoor childhood days of pick-up baseball games, treehouses and "be home for dinner" has all but vanished. Today, childhood is spent mostly indoors, watching television, playing video games and working the Internet. When children do go outside, it tends to be for scheduled events soccer camp or a fishing derby held under the watch of adults. In a typical week, 27% of kids ages 9 to 13 play organized baseball, but only 6% play on their own, a survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found. And childhood obesity has quadrupled! Makes you wonder, doesn't it. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  23. When Coca-Cola was originally made it was a medicine and it had cocaine in it. Once the powers that be figured out cocaine was a narcotic, it was removed. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  24. I just thought of this as it fits with the absurdity going on. We were told that it is no longer acceptable to use the acronym PADBALLS when teaching the safe swim part of the swimming MB. Why? Because it contained the word "balls" and that could be considered a sexual connotation. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  25. Here's the way I see it. The main idea of humor is to make someone laugh. And in order to do so, one must gear the humor to the level of the audience. At BSA camps, the audience is boys ages 10 to 18! What they think is funny is probably very different from what I think is funny. As long as the humor isn't mean spirited or attacking someone, there should be no problem. One year at summer camp, my Troop did a skit at closing campfire. We poked fun at the entire camp from check-in to med checks to swim checks to campsite inspections! Another year we poked fun at the swim check procedure. Both years we got a ton of congrats from the campers AND staff. Gays & dressing like females & the like are the gray areas. What isn't a gray area? Would making fun of the way someone dresses be a gray area? How about the way they chew their food? Or maybe the way someone walks? What about poking fun at a profession like doctors or teachers? Are those gray areas? Skits like JC Penney & the Ugly Girl Scout aren't meant to offend anyone. But not everyone will get the joke. So one might get offended. That can happen with humor. That can happen with anything. It's called life. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
