I'm sorry Ed I just can not and never will agree with you when you state: " Even if they did nothing, they let it happen & shouldn't have" So if a you know a Scout is gonna grab a chipmunk & rip its legs off and you stand there & do nothing that's OK? That is sorry. Knowingly letting someone destroy property is the same as doing it yourself. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

This boy was already being dealt with. What I would do is explain to the entire Troop what happened & since no one fessed up to the other holes, all of those in the tent were responsible. Even if they did nothing, they let it happen & shouldn't have. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Fines for Untrained Leaders
evmori replied to CNYScouter's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
I am in favor of mandatory training, but I'm not in favor of fining units who's leaders aren't trained. If you want to be a leader in the BSA, go to training, get your certificate, complete your volunteer application & get to work! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
New First Class requirement: "invite" a friend
evmori replied to fgoodwin's topic in Advancement Resources
It's a stupid requirement that the SM might as well just sign as completed since there is no way to verify it has been completed. If the Scout says he did it, he did it! I don't expect to see membership numbers soar based on this requirement. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
How true! Thanks Fred!

Memories............ We played Army throughout the entire neighborhood. POW's were tied to a tree. Crab apple battles waged & oh man the welts! Bike tag was king & you had to touch the other bike with your tire! Sled riding through a tier of backyards! Dogfighting on sleds! Snowball battles when the only thing that wasn't allowed was rocks in the snowballs. 5 on 5 pick-up baseball. Pitchers hand were the rules! Bases! What fun! And tackle football (no equipment, of course) ruled the fall! Memories ..........(This message has been edited by evmori)

Maybe National should stay away from using people on this page & just use the universal emblem. Wonder if this is a rotating picture that will change? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

The answer is no. A uniform isn't required for membership. This unit has opted to go with Cafeteria Style Scouting. They think they can pick and choose what they like from the program. That's a broad and unfair assumption based on the info we have been given. This is an adult problem, not a boy problem. FScouter is right on the money here! If the SM & other adult leaders let this go on without doing anything they are the ones at fault. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

So if you want to complain about expensive lawsuits, blame the BSA. No one tops the ACLU in expensive pointless lawsuits! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Can a scout get service hours working a fundraiser
evmori replied to Gurnee Bruce's topic in Unit Fundraising
Did the Scoutmaster approve the fundraiser as a service project? If so the hours could be counted. If the answer is no, then they can't be counted. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
If the 'in perpetuity' wording really meant literally forever, then there would be no reason to have a lease at all. In essence it would mean that BSA effectively owned the property. Not true. The city retains ownership of the building & the BSA can use it forever. The BSA doesn't own it. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Another case of Merlyn posting something that isn't factual but giving the implication it is! Common tactic of his! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Now, do you think there will be any blow-back from those groups against the BSA for getting everyone in this pickle? I'd bet the blow-back would be directed toward the city! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

SaintCad, The BSA doesn't discriminate illegally. Moot point. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Public Expression of Religion Act moves forward
evmori replied to fgoodwin's topic in Issues & Politics
Doesn't the 1st Ammendment give us the freedom of religion? Doesn't this help enforce that? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 -
Fred, you seem to be as ineducable as Ed. "in perpetuity" only means the lease doesn't need to be renewed. The Philly lease, according to news reports, says that the city can terminate the lease by giving the BSA one year's notice. Not to worry Fred. Merlyn loves to spin like a top. "In perpetuity" means forever. Of course the lease doesn't need to be renewed. It never expires. If the news reports are accurate, then the lease isn't "in perpetuity." Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Whoopee for the judge! The BSA is a private youth group for boys. It isn't a religious group nor does it resemble one. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

So I guess your only remaining response to the atheist or homosexual youth (if their family is not rich enough to start a brand new youth organization or pay legal fees to defend themselves from the BSA if they do try) is "too bad"? If ya don't meet the membership requirements, yep. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Dan, So there is no other place those skills and values. Then the choice is simple. Start a similar group that teaches these skills & values. But if you don't meet the membership requirements of the BSA you can't join their group even if they are the only group in town. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Except that the VFW doesn't just have the nicest pool table. They have the ONLY pool table. And no one in town is willing to sell pool tables to anyone else. It doesn't matter if they have the only pool table. To play on their table you have to become a member and if your aren't a vet of a foreign war, you can't become a member. You're right, Hunt. It was poorly worded and I didn't mean to offend. My point was from the perspective of the parents who see belief in the supernatural as equivalent to belief in magic. Good, solid, well-educated, moral folks who want their son to benefit from the terrific Scouting movement but are nonetheless told that their son doesn't measure up to BSA standards. Of course as you point out, from the perspective of inside the membership, they simply don't share the minimum necessary religious beliefs. I think that's a shame. I think Scouting is a big enough tent to include all youth. Actually, they don't meet the membership requirements. You might not like the membership requirements but they are there. Sorta like becoming an American citizen. Either you follow the rules or stay an illegal immigrant & reap none of the benefits a citizen has. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Some told me something when I signed up to be a leader many moons ago. It was "You can only be there for the boys who want to be there". It made sense then and still make sense now. I wouldn't bend over backwards for this Scout. The real world won't. I would have a chat with the Scout & dad separately to see if I could figure out what was going on. And I would let him go to camp. But with the onus that any incidents that cause a problem (like not doing dishes, getting in line, etc.) and home he goes! One problem Scout shouldn't ruin summer camp for the entire Troop. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10

Hunt, Excellent point! Merlyn, Maybe you should equivocate the term discrimination. You might really learn something! Then again, since you are so stuck in your ways, I doubt it. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
