  1. Man I love it! The only reason the the ruling went the way it did was because someone lied! My sides hurt from the laughter! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10 Never Forget 9-11
  2. I don't know about this. To me, there's a problem where attendance at the recruiting session is mandatory--this is different from letting groups set up tables at back-to-school night. For those who support the court's decision, would you have any trouble if the school also allowed mandatory recruiting sessions by a Catholic youth organization? By the Young Atheists? By the ACLU Youth Division? As long as all have equal access. I wouldn't like my kids having to hear the ACLU but as long as they had to hear the BSA or Young Life then that would be OK. 3. Two parents came forward and complained because advancement was being held up. Their position was the boys attended the class in good faith and if the MBC failed to do the job the boys should not be punished by having the badges withheld. One parent said "If I sign up for training and attend the class but the staff does not cover the correct material I should not be penalized and asked to give up more of my time to retake the class. This is the main reason I deplore MB Colleges or anything like them. So if the boy signed up for the MB & sat in a room & no one showed up & he received a completed MB card for that merit badge, would they feel the same? How does the Scout feel about this? 4. Beg all you want but training a dog is in no way the same as teaching kids anything. Dogs don't think. They react based on instinct. Humans, on the other hand, have the ability to discern. They can determine right from wrong, but only if they are taught the difference. A dog will do whatever you train it to do regardless of right or wrong. Sometimes telling someone what to do will help teach them, too. Depends on the situation & how the telling is done. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  5. Training a dog & training a boy are not even close to being the same thing. You can train a dog to urinate when you say give if you want to! Dogs don't have ethics! Just watch one when company comes over! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  6. Since dad was an ASM in this Troop he knew what his younger son would have to do. "Be Prepared" I can understand the Troop not allowing someone the parents "hired" to go on outings with this Scout. The G2SS addresses this. And why, if dad is an ASM, would they "hire" someone to go. Why couldn't mom go? Or the older Eagle brother? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10(This message has been edited by evmori)
  7. Character is what you do when no one is watching. It's all about character. Poor character leads to poor ethical decisions. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  8. The final authority should rest with the Scout. It really is his choice to do what he thinks is right. Since we are the be teaching the Scouts to make ethical decisions, shouldn't we be steering the Scouts in this direction? What if the Scout says "I don't care if I didn't do the requirement. The counselor signed the card as complete and that's good enough for me." Are we doing our job? I don't think. And while we might have to "give" the Scout the MB, I think there is a Scout Spirit issue at hand. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  9. OK, and then what? I mean is that all you want from you original question is a poll of yes or no? Then what is the question. I feel the Scout should complete the requirement before the badge is considered "earned". And no, that's not all I wanted from my original question. There are those who feel that once a MB is considered complete by a MB counselor that's the end. Makes no difference whether all the requirements were done or not. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  10. I took the old course. Loved it. Got my ticket kicked back a bunch but finally got it approved. Had a great time on our hike! Singing & laughing! Great patrol. But then, we weren't bears. We is EAGLES! "I'm a talon you, we're the Eagles!" NE-V-120 Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  11. Barry, Thank you very much. I would be honored to work with you, too. I understand that if this happens, the MB counselor should be reported to the DAC & noted at the Troop level to not be used again. That's not the issue. My point is not get in the middle between a Scout & his MB counselor. I am a MB counselor for 10 MB's. My point or question is if a requirement for a MB is never done & the MB counselor signs the MB as complete, is it actually complete since a requirement wasn't done? I say no. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  12. I got nothing! Where does one sign up?
  13. In a thread spun from this one, a post had the following "The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law" So if a Scout knows he didn't do a requirement for a merit badge & if we as adults are doing our job, shouldn't the Scout be letting us know he didn't do the requirement for a merit badge & not want it awarded until he completed the undone requirement? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  14. Tell ya what, Eamonn. You do it your way & I'll do it my way. Bet we both get the same results. Just different methods. Neither is wrong. Just different. Have a nice day. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  15. Let me rephrase - If a Scout (or anyone) doesn't know the right thing to do they need to be told. Along with that telling should be a explanation as to why it is the right thing to do. But, we shouldn't expect a boy to always know the right thing to do if he has never been taught or told what that is. Just because we know doesn't mean a boy knows. Thank you Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  16. "At a BOR. Or when the Scout was asked to do something he should have learned" This smells a little like re-testing to me. No retesting involved. At a BOR the Scout is asked what he thought the hardest part of the swimming MB was he says "The inflating the pants part. We didn't do it but it seemed hard." On a campout, the SPL instructs a Scout who has the Pioneering MB to move a log using a timber hitch & the Scout states "I was never taught how to tie a timber hitch. Would you help me?" Naturally, the SPL does providing he can. No retesting involved. We aren't allowed to retest. We are, however, allowed to expect a Scout to be able to use what he was taught. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  17. Doing the right thing because .......... ......... it's the right thing to do. If you see some drop a $50 bill & they don't notice it, the right thing to do is pick it up & return it to the person who dropped it. Why? Because it's the right thing to do. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  18. So if a MB requirement was never done by a Scout but the MB card was signed as completed by a MB counselor the MB is considered completed? Is that fair to all the other Scouts who did all the requirements for the MB? Is that fair to the Scout who didn't complete the requirement? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  19. If the Scout didn't know that the error had been made? I have to wonder how it would come to light? At a BOR. Or when the Scout was asked to do something he should have learned in a MB. It really makes no difference how if comes to light. Is the badge earned or is it a partial? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  20. If if comes to light that a requirement for a merit badge was never done and it was marked complete and the blue card is has been signed by the MB counselor as completed, is it actually completed or should it be considered a partial since it is a fact a requirement was never done? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  21. If you know for a fact they didn't complete certain requirements then the sign-off for completion isn't valid. I would have them fill out new cards, mark the parts they did complete & then rip up the old cards & consider them partials. I would also get in touch with the program director at camp & explain your concerns. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
