  1. Excellent job by the SPL! Since the timeouts don't seem to be working, how about sending them home? Call the parents (mom in the case of the one with the ASM dad) & tell them to come pick them up. When they get there, explain the problem. Advise them if the behavior continues, the Scouts will be placed on probation for xx months & in order to return they will need to bring their parents with them & have a meeting with the leadership. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  2. Ditto to the other posters! It's time to get this unit on track!
  3. A scout is thrifty. He helps pay for every scout who doesn't sell popcorn because council membership prices don't cover the costs involved in providing the scouting program. Nah! Council can be supported in many other ways than popcorn sales. A Scout is thrifty. He doesn't sell an overpriced product. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  4. The internet is a tool. It can be used for learning and it can be used for entertainment. If can be used to find things, make reservations, order gifts, listen to music, send e-mail and watch the 5PM news. It can also be used to look a lewd pictures & read smut. If you have kids, they are your responsibility. If you let them surf the internet unwatched, then you and only you are to blame for what they see. Their natural curiosity will lead the to things they have never experienced which could lead to something they were never meant to see or should ever see. But, if there is guidance from mom & dad the chances of this happening is limited. Sure they might stumble on something. That happens. But with guidance, they won't go looking for it. Remember, they are your kids, not the internets. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  5. The push-ups are not corporal punishment but they do constitute hazing, same as making the boy sing out loud. Huh?????? Hazing??????? Having to do push-ups because you did something you were told not to do is hazing??????? In what state?
  6. Push-ups are not corporal punishment. Makes no difference the amount of push-ups. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  7. The boxes of GS cookies I buy have two sleeves of cookies for $4. A lot more than 12! Better value than popcorn. Popcorn is over priced. There are many other fundraisers units can do. And yeah I know popcorn supports council but I'd rather write a check for $10 to council than pay $10 for an overpriced product. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  8. The BS Handbook says it best! To get full advantage of the program, you need to be there. Letting individual Scouts define active for themselves would never work & would not be fair. If a PLC wants to decide what active is for their unit that would be OK. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  9. I think we have been looking at this all wrong! Why is Scouting shrinking? Too much water! We make our Scouts take showers on campouts so they smell pretty! There are a half dozen or so water related merit badges, two which are Eagle required! We are washing dishes three times a day on campouts! We camp in the rain! If we eliminate all the water, maybe Scouting wouldn't shrink! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  10. My point is that TV advertisiments are not that expensive in the whole scope of things, and that you can get free or sponsored or discounted ones if they really wanted it. Advertising on the local cable channel might be inexpensive but national advertising is expensive. Sure it can be sponsored. But is it cost effective? Maybe not, but you could have catchy quotes! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  11. Point is stop blaming web platforms and access providers for poor parenting - those of us who are adults and want free and unfettered access to legal information (even if we never access it or never intend to access it) will thank you. Excellent point, Calico! There are too many parents who use the internet & TV as babysitters! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  12. My WB patrol made one of these on our 1st weekend! Great basic pioneering project! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  13. Jo, If the 5 mile hike meets both requirements it could be counted for both. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  14. Ron, Sorry to see you go but it is something you have to do. I hope you and your son find an activity as rewarding as Scouting. It has been a pleasure to share these forums with you. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  15. Try this. It's a jpg. If it doesn't work, let me know & I'll see what I can do. http://troop1pgh.250free.com/Graphics/tfoot.jpg? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  16. There is nothing wrong with having fun with the Scouts we lead. If we just sit there and are afraid to interact with them then there is a problem. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  17. Wow, this is what I am talking about. "My son still loves the plug in one of Brad Pitts' international spy movies with Sean Connery when Connery asks Pitt where he learned to shoot like that (expert sniper) and Pitt looks so innocently shocked when he replies, "scouting, Sir." Two words. Imagine 20 seconds. " Forget Bobwhites and Moose, this type of message would resonate with most mainstream boys! 2.5 million is really nothing from a national budget. Heck, one website said the president of scouting is paid 900,000. Of course I don't know that, but I do know our local guy made 110,000 per the local paper. Running all the campgrounds and programs is a huge tens of millions of dollars per year undertaking. Huge programs. 2.5 is a very small percent of what an organization of this size goes through a year. Might seem big to an average American, but 2.5 million is very doable for huge national organizations. But chances are the BSA, if they sought it, could get lots of Public Service Announcments (PSA's) or donated or sponsored media time. The point is that the above message from a movie that would be seen as cool, would make Scouting seem useful and cool. Not of course, to be an assasin but to be a marksman. Movies quotes to promote Scouting! That will fix everything! "Leave the gun take the cannoli" Would help promote cooking! "Say hello to my little friend." Helps promote recruiting! Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  18. Pack, I would never sound like Bob White! What is to be gained by denying this advancement? I don't know if anything is to be gained. What it does do is stress the importance of reading and following the directions. How does this benefit the boy? By reminding him of the importance of following the directions. How does this benefit BSA? Do know that it does. I really think the DAC & Scout should be able to work this out without either side caving in to the other. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  19. I was gonna say the same thing OGE! And I still will. Duty to God doesn't require going to church. And your council Eagle BOR can't require any member of the BSA to be a church member or get church recommendation for their Eagle project. What if the project is for the VFW? Why would a church even care? Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  20. Completely different situations, MinnSM. If this Scout didn't follow the instructions, that is his fault. If the DAC gave his approval via e-mail before this Scout started his project but never signed the packet, that is the fault of both the DAC & the Scout and the DAC should realize what happened & agree there was some miscommunication & move ahead with the BOR. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  21. Doing nothing is endorsing his behavior. Ask questions at his BOR that deal with points of the Scout Law. Ask questions about his leadership as a Den Chief. Ask questions about what he does out of school. If the answers cut the mustard, then you have no choice but to pass him. If they don't cut the mustard, don't agree to pass him. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  22. Just like anything else on the internet, myspace needs monitoring. Sign up for it. Browse around. Check it out. Then make your decision. Deciding without investigating is irresponsible. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
  23. Lisabob, What about their behavior is troubling? Like someone posted, not sitting on the BOR isn't the way to solve the problem. If they don't pass, they don't pass. Ed Mori Troop 1 1 Peter 4:10
