I think the important thing is it's their advancement, not ours. While we all want what's best for our kids, they need to work on some things at their won pace. And it sound like your son is having a great time & learning! Once he does decide to "stick his nose to the grindstone", he won't be able to slow down! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

1st off, I wanna have what Eamonn had for dinner & lunch! Yummy! If the adults can fit both into their schedule, great! If not, can the caving trip be rescheduled so the Troop can go to the camporee? If not, the Scouts need to pick one. Tough decision, but then in life, tough decisions need to be made. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

Kids today have a lot going on. I would agree with this statement. If a boy wants to be active in Boy Scouts & advance, he needs to make the decision to show up. If he doesn't he doesn't advance. It's his choice. To become a starter on the football team, you have to be there. To play 1st tuba in the band you have to be there. To advance in Boy Scouts you have to be there. Making the statement "Active = Registered" is just wrong. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

Never had much use for a "cuss cup" the existence of a "cuss cup" tells the scout while cussing is not proper, its expected and everything is ok as long as you pay your quarter. So, at the college interview, the scout says "I really want to get in here, it's such a great F***ing school, oops, where is your cuss cup, I owe a quarter" Cussing is never expected & it's not OK even if it cost you a quarter. Anyone thinking along this line is absurd. Actually, the purpose of the cuss cup is to deter cussing. And in all the years we have used it, the cussing as decreased to the point of it no longer being necessary. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

Barry, Under normal circumstances, any use of the F word and ya get to ride home early with mom or dad. In this instance, it seemed the language was an attempt to be sent home. Frickin is the same as Oh my G**!. We try to curb the improper use of our Lord's name as well as words like frikin. On camping trips, we have a cuss cup. Frickin cost a quarter. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

This is a true story. We had a Scout (Mike) who fried the day after parents night (Wednesday) every year at summer camp. One year, he told an ASM to go F himself & he was promptly told to pack his bags & mom was called & he went home. The next year the same thing happened only in a more creative way. I was sitting on the porch outside my tent when the rifle range director stopped by. This wasn't a social visit. He informed me that Mike had taken brass off the range & the camp rule was if a Scout does this, he is sent home by the camp director. The range director came to inform me before he went to see the camp director. I told him I thought Mike did this so he could get sent home & I really didn't want to send him home. I asked if during all the rest of Mike's free time if he could be "range boy". In other words, clean up, get stray arrows, put up new targets - busy work. The range director agreed. No sooner had the range director left, the Eco-Con director shows up. This wasn't a social visit either. She informed me there is a cuss cup in Eco-Con & if anyone one in the area cusses it cost them a quarter. She then informed me Mike ran up a $20 bill in about 20 minutes! We were both sorta impressed but agreed something was going on. We came to the agreement that Mike would apologize to all who were present at Eco-Con when the incident took place (which was to be 10 AM on Friday). When Mike returned he was told we had visitors & what he was to do. He seemed disappointed he wasn't going home & figured he'd play up the apology. Word was spread to all the program areas about Mike's apology & at 10 AM on Friday, 3/4's of the camp was present to hear the apology unbeknownst to Mike. When he stood up on the picnic table to apologize & looked out over the throng, he realized what he had done. Mike went on to earn his Eagle & we never had another problem like this again. Should the scouts have a voice in choosing the SM?

Letting the PLC has input in the process is a good idea but nothing more than input for the reasons Eamonn stated in his post. Great example Eamonn! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10 -
Brent ask some great questions. Scout spirit shouldn't be assumed. It is a requirement just like all the other requirements. The main difference is it is very individual & hard to judge. But it is possibly the most important requirement. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

I love discussions about Scout Spirit. Since Scout Spirit is living the Oath & Law in everyday life a Scout must be brutally honest about his self-evaluation of Scout Spirit. If he just figures I'll tell my Scoutmaster I have been living the Oath & Law in my everyday life even though I haven't, that's not Scout Spirit. And everyday life means life in and out of Scouting. There are those who feel what a Scout does or doesn't do while with his unit has no bearing on Scout Spirit. Horse-puckey! And to answer Dug's question, if a Scout only shows up when he feels like it, he is displaying Scout Spirit. BTW, thanks for the lead-in OGE. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

Eagle: Overzealous Parents / Scout without spirit
evmori replied to ynotcamp's topic in Open Discussion - Program
In both cases, the boy is there & is probably learning. If he has no Scout Spirit, he doesn't advance. But remember, Scout Spirit is not just when he is at Scouts. A talk with mom & dad in both cases is needed. They need to understand that the advancement is their son's not theirs. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10 -
Use of the f word, ya go home! Don't tolerate it.

Gern, You remember correctly! Safe Swim Defense & Safety Afloat are only good for two years. It is recommended YPT be taken every two years, but I don't think it is required. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

I gotta question why the LDS church was dropped from the federal suit? From the article it sounds like this was a LDS chartered unit. Is the LDS church distancing themselves from this? If so, how is that possible since by chartering a unit, they technically own the unit. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

When did the Schism Occur and How do we fix it?
evmori replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Open Discussion - Program
SR540Beaver, We have done Webelos Woods for eons in my district. I have staffed many. This is nothing more than Webelos III and in no way similar to camporees. I staffed many a camporee before the Webelos ban & the Webelos had a great time! They competed against other Webelos but they participated in the same competitions as the Boy Scouts. I think part of the problem can be attributed to the fact that WEBELOS are no longer allowed to participate with Troops at camporees. This was a big drawing card & the powers that be decided it wasn't a good idea. I also feel part of the problem is WEBELOS leaders not properly preparing the boys for Boy Scouts & the Troop leaders for not being prepared for the WEBELOS. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10 -
E, You talking about Alfie boy? What did you think of him? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

Golly, your honor, ya mean I really had to tell the truth even though I don't believe in truth?

For the sanity of all the rest of us ... Brian, please insert, "In my opinion, " before Ed's posts. And Ed, please preface your opinions with, "In my opinion, " Who's Brian? That wasn't an opinion. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

As packsaddle has pointed out, there are units that ignore the 'god' requirement So ignoring the truth part of the oath when sworn in at court is OK? Ignoring it doesn't make it go away. Those units should be held accountable. A public school chartering a BSA unit is in violation of nothing. Hey the National Guard is looking for a chaplain! Doesn't that violate something? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
-
Don't agree Merlyn. The God part of the Scout Oath isn't optional. The God part of the oath taken when being sworn in at court is optional. If you don't subscribe to the tenets of an organization, don't join. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
-
They didn't object, they just omitted god when they said the promise, etc. Eventually, some adults in the program said they couldn't do that. They omitted the God part of the promise. Isn't that sorta like omitting the truth part when being sworn in at court? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

When did the Schism Occur and How do we fix it?
evmori replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Just when did the great Schism between Cubs and Boy Scouts occur and how do we fix it? I think it occurred when kids became involved in so much they needed a spreadsheet to figure things out. WEBELOS to Boy Scouts was once a natural progression. Now it seems parents don't want to commit to the time & there are way more things for boys to do! The natural progression is gone. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10 -
Sounds like a camping trip with most Troops!
