  1. Id like to know at what point or for what types of disabilities YOU would ask for the exception. At what point? When all other options have been exhausted. What type? A valid disability, not a fear. Fear of the water isn't a disability. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  2. Both supervise the ax yard. This is a very dangerous area, but that doesn't mean adults hover over the area. Everyone is responsible to following the rules in the ax yard. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  3. Some of it is boys being boys. But when it starts to get nasty, that's not boys being boys. Boys this age are "claiming" their ground. They want to be tough & sometimes name calling is the way they try to bet tough. There are no hard & fast rules on how to handle this. It is strictly case by case. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  4. Make training mandatory. Make cooking a required merit badge. Make the Quality Unit award tougher to earn.
  5. This is one of the better Scouting communities on the internet. There is a wealth of knowledge to be had here. I have learned much & would like to thank all those who contribute. As to #2, I wouldn't hesitate to have anyone read anything I have ever posted here or any other forum. I know some people in my district have read my posts. I would not post anything in any forum I wouldn't say in person. And I post in a lot of forums on a variety of topics. I'm one of those "what you see is what you get" people. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  6. As long as the by-laws aren't restates of BSA policy. If they define meeting dates & times & dues & stuff like that, sure. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  7. In general, most of the moderators do a great job! There are a those who don't answer PM's. Not sure why. Do things get heated? Sometimes. And there is something wrong with that? I know I go at Merlyn. Why? I really don't like him. His sole purpose, in my opinion, is to destroy Scouting as we know it and that bothers me. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  8. SueM, How can you morally sign-off on Scout Spirit? You can't. And if you do you would be setting a dangerous precedent. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  9. Ya gotta wonder why threads are closed. There are valid reasons for some but others seem to be closed because a moderator just feels like it. Bet this one gets shut down. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  10. Ethical abuse? Sounds the same as coercion to me.
  11. Considering we have all had different experiences in & out of Scouting, I enjoy the different styles. It gives many different perspectives. Pet peeves - people who refuse to take ownership, rule thumpers & those who dish it but can't take it. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  12. This Scout getting lost has nothing to do with the training the BSA has in place for leaders. To me, it's nothing more than poor parenting. Read the details of what happened. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  13. According to the above thread blue cards are obsolete and not used any more! Not all councils use or ever used blue cards. Mine still does. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  14. HIPAA doesn't apply to Scouting or any other non-medical entity. Please read this link. http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/hipaa/consumer_summary.pdf(This message has been edited by evmori)
  15. I'm not seeing this lost Scout in NC as a youth protection issue. To me it is just poor parenting that the Troop had to deal with. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  16. Merit badges can be purchased without ever looking at a merit badge pamphlet! Just because a Scout has a merit badge doesn't mean he has earned it. If the Troop record-keeping is accurate & current, this isn't really an issue. The MB counselor should have his portion of the blue card & council should have a record of it being earned. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  17. I might not be their parent but when they are with me they are my kids. My responsibility. And I might not handle things the same as mom & dad. Why? I'm not their parent but they are still my responsibility. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  18. I've always associated "cookie cutter" with two things being identical. There are 10 Troops within 5 miles of my house & none are identical. I think if the BSA had wanted "cookie cutter" units, there would be a lot more absolutes in the program. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  19. How does requiring having dad attend all camping trips teach there are consequences for your actions? And if mom & dad are the ones who gave this Scout a "vacation" from his meds, shouldn't they ultimately be the ones responsible for their son's behavior? I'm glad he was found & is OK. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  20. Thanks. I can read the disclaimers & other verbiage on the site. Just questioning the relevance of the topic. And since this is an open forum, that is allowed, isn't it? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  21. And this has what to do with the Boy Scouts of America? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  22. We had kids on meds & the parents didn't send them on weekend campouts because they wanted to give their son a break. They said they do it a lot on weekends when they are home. HELLO! They are going to be in the outdoors with animals & sharp tools & living in a tent with another boy! That's a heck of a lot different from sitting in front of the TV playing video games from Friday night until Sunday night! HELLO! Placing this type of responsibility on unit leaders is just flat out wrong. If little Timmy is on meds all week, he needs to be on them for the camping trip. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  23. Beavah, I would bet the responses you got would be very similar in many units. There are times we forget to ask the boys. Thanks for sharing. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  24. When I was the Advancement Chair, on a monthly basis, I would print out all the advancement records for each Scout. I would compare these to their books & make the necessary changes/entries as needed. This was also a great way to review each Scout's progress. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  25. Having driven hundreds of Scouts thousands of miles on many trips all I can say is wow! My prayer go out to the families. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
