  1. How is an atheist rights being violated by a public school chartering a BSA unit Merlyn?
  2. In reality, there is no difference since no one is forced to join either. Well sherm, ya gotta be able to swim to join a swim team~!
  3. Big difference Merlyn and not even the same thing. If a public school charters a BSA unit, you don't have to join. You are not required to join. You won't be thought less of if you don't join. Your civil rights have not been harmed.(This message has been edited by evmori)
  4. How is a public school chartering a BSA unit a violation of anyone's civil rights? There is no requirement to join the BSA.
  5. Registered? Who cares! If an old Eagle Scout wanted to attend a ECoH in his uniform. more power to him! When my son had his Eagle CoH, an older Scout wore his uniform to the CoH. Looked really cool!
  6. Using POR contracts IS coming up short.
  7. How do you maintain 300 feet between patrol campsites with all the patrol stoves run off one big tank? Thats a lotta hose Wireless connection!
  8. Mike F, A signed job description don't mean a hill of beans if it comes to an appeal. More than likely you will lose regardless of what you have the Scout sign. I see contracts like this as a way to "hold something over the Scout's head" not a way to assist with advancement.
  9. Have ya tried running a couple stoves from one tank? We built a couple rigs to handle two stoves and a lantern of one 20lb tank.
  10. Why does anything need to be signed? If the SM is doing his job correctly, POR contracts are not needed.
  11. Smoking is not illegal if you are of age. So what do you mean by doing the "right thing" FScouter? Does not wearing the uniform properly in front of the Scouts hinder the mission?
  12. should be Why do they do this? Why not just state "Smoking is prohibited at all Scouting functions, meetings, and activities." No interpretation necessary.
  13. "A scout is clean",... clean in his personal habits. Lets be honest Smoking put plainly is a dirty, disgusting and expensive habit(addiction). Anyone working with kids on campouts or other trips and who is running off to the woods every hour to light up is doing a disservice to the kids. In the privacy of your own home is one thing but exposing your scouts to second hand smoke is quite another. Besides think of all the money you would save. It's slippery slope time! Yes smoking is expensive and an addiction. I use to smoke. Di so for 30+ years. I quit nearly 10 years ago. Dirty? Don't know about that. Is drinking alcohol a dirty habit? Is gambling a dirty habit?
  14. As with most rules in life, there is only ambiguity if one doesn't like the rule. Wrong. If the BSA wanted to truly ban smoking the wording would read "Smoking is prohibited on all BSA property and at all BSA functions (defined)". Instead, the BSA decided to toss in words like "should be" or "may be" leaving it open to interpretation.
  15. Let's look at a typical job description. I opened the book and it fell to Instructor. Here's the official job description: Instruct Scouting skills as needed withing the troop or patrols. Prepare well in advance for each teaching assignment. Set a good example Wear the Scout uniform correctly Live by the Scout Oath and Law Show and help develop Scout spirit. Seems pretty complete to me. What else would you add Twocubdad?
  16. Yep we have debated this until the cows came home! If the BSA wanted to ban smoking it would have been real easy to word but the BSA chose to make it confusing.
  17. There are no contracts needed. The BSA spells out each POR very well.
  18. Yeah jet I know that. But based on what has been posted, dad wrote those other positions in. It doesn't sound like these other POR's were assigned by the SM.
  19. To deny this particular Scout his rank at this time would be seen as picking on the Scout for the actions of his dad, and of all the leaders sitting at the BOR, I was certainly not going to be the one to do that. No it isn't. By your own admission this Scout did nothing in his POR and since there is no such thing as a "backup POR", he should have been denied advancement based on that and told what he needed to do to advance. But apparently no one wants to deal with dad so the rubber stamp was brought out.
  20. That was my opinion OGE. Well Vicki, since you have divinity degree, who did write Ephesians? Or maybe a better question is who is thought to have written Ephesians? And if it isn't Paul, why does the 1st verse read "Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God ......"(NIV)?
  21. Thanks acco. You are correct. Let me rephrase. All merit badges can be completed by any age registered Boy Scout.
  22. RememberSchiff...I did approve him for rank as did the other members of the BOR. Why? Because he met the requirements that are established for that rank. He received the required merit badges, he fulfilled his service hours, the Scoutmaster signed off on his Scout Spirit, and even if he did not perform his POR as Patrol Leader, he had the "backup" POR of Bugler which he performed at a couple of outings. I'm not going to deny rank to a 12 year old that believes he accomplished the objectives put out to him just because I feel that the way he accomplished them was wrong. Which POR was he using for this rank. If it was PL, he should not have been passed since according to you, he was a PL in name only. That is not actively service as is required. There are no "backup" POR's for rank. If you want to put a stop to this type of thing you need to draw a line in the sand.
  23. For instance, for those of us in the latter camp, it has been well-established that Ephesians probably wasn't written by Paul at all but was written much later by an author who was trying to prove to the Romans that Christianity wasn't a threat (as the Romans had taken Christianity out of the protected Jewish fold and deemed it an "unlicensed" religion).
