  1. Received this from my council today The National Council is currently in the process of making significant upgrades to the computer hardware that supports its many products and services. A new disk array will be installed over the course of several weeks this summer. Because there is no way to keep all existing systems running while this disk migration is performed, there will be selective weekend outages of some of our major systems. Please plan accordingly. Friday, July 6, at 9 p.m. (CST) until Sunday, July 8 at 6 p.m. (CST) All systems will be down. This includes all ScoutNET functions, including PAS and fiscals, MyBSA, Internet Advancement, Internet Rechartering, E-Learning, etc. Scoutstuff.org and Scouting.org will continue to be available during this time. Friday, July 13, at 9 p.m. (CST) until Sunday, July 15, at 6 p.m. (CST) E-mail systems will be down intermittently. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  2. Yup Scouting competes with tons of other youth programs & sports. But why make the Scouting program so "vanilla" that it is only a shell of what it should be? Scouting is about being outdoors, camping, building fires, pitching a tent, taking a hike, canoing, learning how to ties knots, etc. That doesn't appeal to everyone. Big deal! Don't water down the program! Not every boy is interested in Scouting! Get use to that fact! Make the program the best outdoor program there is! That's the appeal! Not the "We Are For Everyone" approach! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  3. Thanks, Terry, for all you do! Also, congrats on being elected chairman of the ITA. The site response has improved. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  4. uz2bnowl, Nope. Just drives me crazy that there are those who feel the BSA is always correct regardless of what they do. No one or organization is infallible. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  5. Who said no ads? Just less ads & more Scouting! If we gotta put up with ads, how about something that has something to do with Scouting! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  6. I like the idea! A Scout isn't denied advancement, he just hasn't reached the level to advance at this time! But he will! Great way to look at it! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  7. packsaddle, Yes I did! I like the deep sea diver making coffee! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  8. The "UP" are those who feel the uniform is more important than any other facet of Scouting & use every chance they get to point out how correct their uniform is while everyone else's isn't. Those who live in glass houses .............. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  9. How can an iPhone help the mayor do his job better? I know! He can surf the net while making policy decisions! Dang! Why didn't I see that before! Plus, he can keep better track of the time he is waiting in line while he's on the clock for Ozfest tickets! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  10. Both my kids are deaf (son 25 daughter 22). Did two IEP's a year. Early on my wife & I got tired of "everyone does this" IEP's. Had a 4 hour IEP for my son. Rewrote the entire thing. If we don't require our kids to stretch their academics, most will take the easy road. NCLP is the same as Zero Tolerance policies. Neither work. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  11. Maybe not, Lisabob, but I wouldn't put it past him to submit a voucher to the city for it! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  12. Too funny! Bet he was doing a whole lotta work waiting in line! Maybe that's why they are tossing the BSA out of their building so the city can rent it to pay for the mayors new iPhone! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  13. I was the Advancement Chair for my unit for awhile. When the SM conference was completed, tech SM would let me know. I would wait for the Scout to ask for a BOR but I had already lined up the necessary people to sit on the BOR. When the Scout came to me & asked for a BOR, I would tell him when it would be (usually the following week) and requested he bring his Boy Scout Handbook. On the date of the BOR, the Scout would give me his handbook & I would compare what was signed off to my records. Then the BOR would convene. The BOR lasted no longer than 1/2 hour. If the Scout didn't bring his handbook, we still held his BOR but the questions asked were more to verify the requirements were completed than general Scouting questions. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  14. As others have posted, the Handbook is the Scout's record of completed requirements and it is the Scout's responsibility to keep track of his advancement. There is a grounds for appeal here but there is a good possibility it won't be overturned. A BOR is not a retest. If the BOR has no idea what requirements have been completed, how are they to review them? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  15. Ya gotta remember Gunny, everything you read on the web is true! It seems to be the way to go to pick on those groups who are stalwarts in their values. The way I look at it, you've got to stand for something or you're gonna fall for anything. The BSA stands for something. And no Merlyn, it isn't discrimination. It is wholesome American values. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  16. I love the uniform. Wear it whenever it is appropriate. And whoever stated it starts at the top with the SM being in uniform was absolutely correct. But we need to remember, owning a uniform is not a requirement to be a member of the BSA. I think it should be. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  17. Only had to do this once. My SPL never showed for a meeting. Told mom & dad he was going. Never told me he wouldn't be there. He went to the park with some friends to hang out. Mom & dad came to pick him up & he wasn't there. They had no clue. The rest of the Troop watched this whole thing unfold. The next week, I removed him as SPL based on not living the Scout Law. He understood & ended up earning his Eagle. There is nothing that states a Scout can't be removed from a POR. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  18. Great question! This would be a great chance for the SM to help mold young men into good leaders. I would let the Scouts live with the results of their vote & work with the newly elected SPL & ASPL to become the best leaders the unit ever had. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  19. Whos rights are being violated?(This message has been edited by evmori)
  20. So I'll take it from the response posted there are no atheist rights that were violated. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  21. Beavah, I don't consider atheists who are defending their civil rights to be "sticking their fingers in the eyes of the majority"; at best, it's sticking their fingers in the eyes of bigots who don't think atheists should have the same rights as anyone else. What atheists right are being violated? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  22. The school lawyers, huh. And it's not possible they are making their recommendation on the side of caution so as not to offend anyone. Better known as being PC. Doesn't mean they are correct. All this has done is stopped a very valuable program because someone got their feelings hurt. Guess what, there are no constitutional guarantees you won't get your feelings hurt. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  23. "Schools Superintendent Robert Lichtenfeld said the district's lawyers had advised him that the school's support of any religious pledge runs contrary to the requirement for separation of church and state in public education." There is no law that states the church & state must be separate.
  24. So Ed, does this mean you think that public schools should ignore their ethics (and the law, too)? No Merlyn they shouldn't ignore their ethics. And I would bet they are by stopping the program and going the PC route. No law has been broken. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
