You are not the only atheist in the USA Merlyn and you claim to be fighting for atheist rights so it would appear you know more about atheists than I or others on this site do which is why I asked you why would an atheist want to join the BSA. I know you don't but what about other atheists? And please don't toss out the "you will have to ask them yourself" line.

Some think it is not proper that a national flag take precedence over a flag with the Cross of Christ on it inside a church. The US Flag Code cannot not dictate rubrical protocol inside a place of worship. If a denomination or congregation wishes to display both the US and Christian flags and give the right position to the Christian flag that is their business and constitutional right. Regardless of what people think, there if no "Flag of Christ" only denominational flags. And the Flag Code can and actually does dictate where the American flag should be placed regardless of the venue. And it is a law with penalties. And if you remember correctly, Jesus stated "render to Caesar what is Caesar's". In other words, one should follow the laws of man as well as God's law.

I've yet to see any official BSA program material that states that the Scoutmaster "Assigns" a Merit Badge Counselor. It's in the Boy Scout Handbook, Scoutmaster Handbook, Advancement Guidelines and on the BSA web site. From the web site Pick a Subject. Talk to your Scoutmaster about your interests. Read the requirements of the merit badges you think might interest you. Pick one to earn. Your Scoutmaster will give you the name of a person from a list of counselors.

Well, Merlyn, if you were forced to join or get booted from the school then you would be being discriminated against. But having a group at a school you can't join because you don't meet the membership requirements is not discrimination. Atheism might not be a religion in the technical sense but it is a belief system just like a religion.

What's with assigning counselors? As someone has already posted, the Scoutmaster is to assign the counselor.

And unless they are forced to join, which they aren't, there is no actual discrimination.

1) Assign a new one. 2) Contact the one assigned 1st. 3) Contact the one assigned 1st.

Do what you need to OGE. If you ain't forced to join, nothing is violated. Regardless of the reason, name calling is just plain wrong.
