  1. Thanks for that great post Beav! Excellent work on a sad situation!
  2. The first ingredient of Boy Scouting Advancement is "the Scout Learns." If the Scout really hasn't learned, it doesn't much matter whether he has managed to complete paperwork or scam a test signoff from "the weakest link." So true! Sure that requirement is done, but the Scoutmaster Conference may not be completed. If the Scoutmaster feels that the skills are not learned (forget mastering them) the Scoutmaster doesn't need to complete the Scoutmaster Conference. He can tell the scout to go home and practice the skills and then come back in a week or two. This isn't the purpose of a Scoutmaster Conference. The purpose is to see how the Scout is doing, how he likes/dislikes his Scouting experience to date & talk about his Scouting future. And a Scout only needs to participate in a Scoutmaster Conference. There is no pass/fail. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  3. Merlyn, I never said there were any inaccuracies. I was asking you if you saw any & you pointed out one. OK an asset the city now has to take care of. The BSA handled the maintenance to this point. Don't assume anything. I think it would be a hoot if someone rented the building then sub-let it to the BSA for free! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10 A blessed Christmas to all
  4. Merlyn, I was only asking if you thought there were any other inaccuracies in the post. Apparently you don't. So I guess it's OK for the city to kick out the very group that built & maintained the building for all these years. Now it becomes a tax burden to the residents and the responsibility of the city to maintain it. Yup Philly did the smart thing. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10 A blessed Christmas to all
  5. CYA = Cover Your A**. No hidden agenda I know of!(This message has been edited by evmori)
  6. And people will still bleat to keep gays out! Learn to live with it!
  7. The city council didn't break the lease agreement, the lease has always had a one-year cancellation clause. And the reason the BSA gave the building to the city was because those were the terms that allowed the BSA to erect a building on public property in the first place. Anything else in that post that isn't accurate, Merlyn? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10 A blessed Christmas to all
  8. In those cases, GW, the problem is with the SM! Don't add PC requirements to deal with bullying just so National can say "We are addressing the issue". Nothing more than CYA! And bullying, like hazing, is very subjective! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10 A blessed Christmas to all
  9. Ed, Why don't you want to have a working knowledge of the Cub program and the Venturing program? Cubbing is the seed corn; from what I've seen, most of our kids come up that path. Being able to transition them from parent guided and adult-led to self-directing seems to be a vital soft skill for a Scouter. Understanding Cubbing also allows the Boy Scout program Scouter to give better reachback to area Packs, which in turn helps recruitment. I was a Cubmaster for three years so I have a pretty good understanding of how Cubs works. I have never been involved in Venturing, but if I am, I will take the training necessary for that. Until then, there is no need. Understanding Cubbing doesn't help a Boy Scout leader learn diddly about Boy Scouting. Making oneself & ones unit available to the local Cub packs is what helps recruitment. Since it seems the BSA has gotten into job specific training, combining Cubs, Boy Scout & Venturing into one Wood Badge program seems to be going in the opposite direction. It also seems to be more about numbers than anything else. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  10. What about the rest of us? What's wrong with having a similar course for Cubs & Venturing? There are enough variances in each program to have their own course. I know if I am a Boy Scout leader, I don't want to learn about Cub stuff. Venturing maybe, but that isn't the real reason I am taking the course. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10 A blessed Christmas to all
  11. But gay rights groups worried that "unlawful discrimination" gave the chapter cover to continue anti-gay hiring practices. Actually, the BSA legally discriminates. The BSA should get someone to buy the building then rent it back to them for $1. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10 A blessed Christmas to all
  12. No type of policy like that exists! Sounds like this guy learned something & is mis-interpreting it! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  13. These new requirements should be added to the Family Life MB, which is really a pretty lame Eagle required MB in it's current state. Adding these requirements to the MB makes more sense. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10 A blessed Christmas to all
  14. Then, John, my post of Thursday, 11/29/2007: 6:33:20 AM applies to you, also. You can read between the lines all you want but the only thing you will find is you own assumptions. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  15. So Ed, all the participants of WoodBadge for the 21rst Century did noot receive the same experience as you. And as a result we are less. Where did I post anyone was less? I can't find it & I'm using my flashlight. That is exactly the kind of attitude that needs to be eliminated from scouting as it serves no one You are correct OGE. I hope you heed your own advice. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  16. We have always figured it into the per person cost of the trip. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  17. I took WB in 1994. It was a Boy Scout program. No Cub leaders. We even had a few DE's. We slept in the tents we set up, cooked over the fires we built, had PLC's, had some sit down learning in cabins, worked on our pioneering & compass skills, did skits, lead worship services, attended assembly daily, backpacked, hiked & learned some new recipes all in the great outdoors! It was a blast & the best training course I have ever attended for anything! No movies, no long lectures. Tons of hands on stuff. My patrol functioned the way a Scout patrol was expected to function. We worked together toward a goal! We all made new friends. I have never attended the new course & don't plan to. From what I have read & heard, the new course is more of a management course. Nuff said. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10 NE-V-120 Eagle Patrol "I'm a talon you, we're the Eagles!"
  18. Rank requirements don't require mastery. They require a Scout demonstrate, show, describe, do, etc. but mastery is in that mix. It would be nice if once a Scout learned a skill, they remembered it & were able to use it down the road. Like someone posted, kids are smart. They know what they need to do to get requirements signed off. It's the ones who take the extra step & master the skills that were taught that will soar with the Eagles. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  19. Most of this stuff is a CYA for organizations. They say "we require it" so they are covered. Bullying will continue. Some kids will learn to cope, some won't. Creating new rank requirements or requiring Scouts to go through the training won't eliminate it! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  20. While all this is important, I don't see how it relates advancement? All these new requirements are very subjective & more of a check-off than an actual requirement. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  21. I love the poem! And oh how true! If it wasn't for Christ, we wouldn't have Christmas regardless of when it is celebrated. boorish invective - great terminology! Applies to you well, Merlyn. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  22. Yeah the SM Conference can be the last requirement done before the BOR, but it doesn't have to be! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  23. The advancement BOR doesn't begin until the SM Conference is done. Exactly! The advancement SM Conference shouldn't be held until all the requirements are completed. There is no order to any requirements except the BOR is the last requirement completed. A SM Conference can be done anytime. It's really nothing more than a casual talk with the Scout. A Scout can't fail a SM Conference. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
